Harriers survive, thrive in Sultan

“Muddy trails and fishy smells, but no rain in Sultan! We call that a success!”

Having survived its final regular season meet Wednesday, the Coupeville Middle School cross country team headed back home, accompanied by a happy coach in Amber Wyman.

The Wolves ran strongly at the seven-team meet at Sultan’s Osprey Park, with the girls claiming 2nd place and the CMS boys earning 4th place.

South Whidbey swept both team titles.

Reed Atwood of South Whidbey and Isaac Girma of King’s won individual titles as the assembled runners navigated the 1.7-mile course.

The end of the season approaches for the Wolf harriers, with just one event left on the schedule.

That’s the Cascade League Championships, which go down Wednesday, Oct. 18 in Langley.

Big meet, big results.

Running at the Nike Hole in the Wall Cross Country Invitational in Arlington Friday, Coupeville Middle School athletes made their presence felt.

The Wolf girls finished 5th out of 12 teams, while their male counterparts claimed 9th in a field of 16 squads.

McMurray Middle School, from Vashon Island, earned both team titles.

The race, which is followed Saturday by a high school competition, sent 256 runners scampering across a 1.7-mile course.

“We had some great showings in a big group of runners!” said CMS coach Amber Wyman.

“Coupeville did a great job with some big schools! I am so proud of them!”

The Wolves get right back at it next week, traveling to Sultan Wednesday, Oct. 11 for a seven-team meet.

After that, Coupeville wraps its season with an appearance at the Cascade League Championships, which goes down in Langley Oct. 18.

Ketterling, Green blaze a winning trail

It begins.

A new season of Coupeville Middle School cross country officially kicked off Saturday, with the Wolves travelling to Langley for the 44th annual Carl Westling Invite.

While there, 19 Wolves hit the trail, with 8th graders Lillian Ketterling and Beckett Green zipping across the 3000-meter course to claim top 10 finishes.

Injuries and family obligations reduced Coupeville’s roster a bit, but Wolf coach Amber Wyman came away pleased with the performance of those who were available.

“The athletes that were able showed up to run!” she said. “They all did a great job, pushed themselves hard and it showed.

“I’m very excited to see what this season is going to bring!”

The Wolves have a busy week ahead of them, with two meets in three days.

Coupeville hosts a four-team Cascade League meet at Ft. Casey next Thursday, Sept. 21, then travels to Shoreline Sept. 23 for the King’s Roller Coaster Run.

Epic journey, epic success

They survived and prospered.

Traveling to the wilds of Sultan Thursday, Coupeville Middle School track and field athletes combined to win 11 events and notch 66 PR’s at a three-team meet.

The Wolf 6th/7th grade boys won the team title, while their female counterparts finished a close second to South Whidbey.

Coupeville’s next-door neighbors, who had the deepest roster, won both 8th grade team titles.

CMS 7th graders Beckett Green and Nick Laska were three-time winners Thursday, including teaming up with Nathan Niewald and Roger Merino-Martinez to claim the title in the 4 x 100 relay.

Green also hit the tape first in the 100 and 200, while Laska finished on top in the shot put and discus.

Merino-Martinez (long jump), Shiloh Sandlin (800), and 6th grader Daniel Payan Vasquez (400) were winners while Tamsin Ward (100, shot put) and the girls 4 x 200 relay unit also triumphed.

All five girls to finish atop the podium are 6th graders, with the relay squad comprised of Hyley Farrell, Elizabeth Marshall, Kennedy O’Neill, and Sage Stavros.

With her two wins, Ward has piled up 10 victories this season, which puts her in big-time company.

Lindsey Roberts won 22 times as an 8th grader in 2015, after notching eight wins as a 7th grader, while Makana Stone finished first 12 times as an 8th grader in 2012.

The duo, who finished with eight and seven state meet medals during their high school days, respectively, never competed as 6th graders as eligibility rules have changed since their middle school days.

Whether they won, PR’d, or just came close Thursday, each Wolf in uniform had an impact, said CMS coach Jon Gabelein.

“Our athletes performed really well during the longest road trip of the season,” he said. “The athletes again proved that the harder they work, the better they get.

“I hope they are as proud as I am of the clear improvements they are showing.”

The Wolves return to action next Thursday, May 25 with an appearance at the Cascade League Championships, which are held at Lakewood High School.

The season-ending rumble is a two-day affair, with day #2 set for May 31 at the same location.

Hall, Green pace young runners

They stood tall at the Falls.

The Coupeville Middle School cross country program sent 25 runners to the line Thursday at a six-school meet in Granite Falls, with Olivia Hall and Beckett Green capturing team honors.

Both Wolves nabbed 8th place in the individual standings, while tangling with runners from powerhouses like King’s and Langley.

The 1.7-mile course tested the young Coupeville harriers, while still having a lot less hills than their most-recent meet.

The Wolves get back at it Friday, Oct. 7, when they compete at the Hole in the Wall Invitational at Lakewood High School.
