Kids cheer camp cancelled

A youth cheer camp originally planned for February 1 has been cancelled.

The plan was for Coupeville High School cheerleaders and coaches to teach students in grades K-8, with money raised going to help fund the Wolves trip to nationals.

For a fundraiser to be run through the school, and operated on school grounds, requires school board approval, however, something which was not in place.

With approval, which could have come at the January 27 school board meeting, any money raised by the camp would have still needed to go through the school’s ASB fund, and not been available for use prior to the trip to nationals.

The CHS cheerleaders are continuing various fundraisers on their own, and plan to replace the cheer camp with a community dinner or similar event.

Youth basketball finale bumped a week

Snowmageddon 2019 has claimed another event. But not permanently.

The season finale for the youth basketball league run by Coupeville High School coaches and players, originally set for Saturday, Feb. 9, is being pushed back a week.

With snow still falling in many areas, and much more expected, as well as freezing temperatures arriving to possibly turn Whidbey’s roads into ice rinks, postponing an early-morning event seems more than reasonable.

The final week of lessons and games, as well as pictures, will go down 9 AM next Saturday, Feb. 16.

Unless we’re entering a new ice age. Then check back later for updates.

Alumni hoops tourney called off!!

For the first time in years, there won’t be an alumni basketball tourney in Coupeville.

The Tom Roehl Roundball Classic, which grew from an all-Wolf event to a major hoops showdown pitting local teams against off-Island foes, has been called off a month before tip-off.

The 2018 tourney was originally set for Dec. 22.

Tournament organizer Noah Roehl released a statement Monday afternoon:

We are canceling the 2018 Tom Roehl Hoops tournament.

We may re-visit hosting at a later date in the spring and will re-evaluate for future years.

We are sorry to do this, but feel it’s in the best interest of folks involved in organizing the tournament and time commitments of all of us over the holidays.

The tournament is named in honor of Noah’s father, who was a highly-influential local coach for decades.

Tom Roehl was an assistant football coach for many years on Ron Bagby’s staff at Coupeville High School, while also running a very-successful youth basketball program.

After his death in 2003, the Roehl family launched football and basketball alumni games, which have generated considerable money for scholarships which are presented to local students annually.

While the football game was retired, the basketball tourney grew in popularity, as alumni teams like Red Pride and the Coupeville Cows vied with teams from Oak Harbor, South Whidbey, Seattle and beyond.

Snow hoops for you, girls!!

Mother Nature strikes again.

With snow covering the ground Thursday, the Coupeville Middle School girls basketball teams will not travel to Port Angeles to face Stevens.

The move, announced mere moments ago by Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith, was made based on both “weather and road conditions.”

A makeup date will be determined later.

Barring any more blizzards, the Wolves return to the court next Monday, Feb. 26, when they travel to Sequim.

Nope, no games for you!!

Put the buses back in the barn.

Mother Nature, in all her windy, ferry-rockin’ glory, has forced cancellations of all Coupeville basketball games scheduled for tonight.

The girls and boys high school squads were supposed to travel to Belfair to play non-conference games against 2A North Mason, while the middle school boys were going to be trekking to Sequim.

With the season wrapping down — the CHS girls have seven games left, the CHS boys six, all to be played between now and Feb. 4 — it’s highly unlikely the high school games will be rescheduled.

The middle school game, though, is a league affair, so Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith is working on finding a new date.
