“It was a perfect, beautiful day for some PRs!”

Listening to the words of coach Elizabeth Bitting, the Coupeville High School track and field squad set 68 personal bests Wednesday at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships in Mount Vernon.

Toss in 10 wins and a team title for the Wolf boys, and it was a great day all around for those reppin’ the red and black.

The CHS boys held off La Conner 148.5-126 to claim top team honors, while Mount Vernon Christian (104.5), Orcas Island (73), and Friday Harbor (65) rounded out the field.

On the girls’ side, MVC claimed first with 174.5 points, with La Conner edging Coupeville 132-131. Friday Harbor tallied 51.5, with Orcas sitting at 46.

The Wolves were led by junior Carson Field, who won the 800 and 1600, while also sweeping both boys relay races and both pole vault titles (Carly Burt and Cael Wilson).

Lyla Stuurmans (800), Zane Oldenstadt (Shot Put), Aleera Kent (1600), and Zac Tackett (Discus) also won as CHS kicked off its postseason run.

Next up is the district meet Saturday, May 11 in Coupeville. Finish in the top two there and you qualify for state, which is May 23-25 in Yakima.

The Wolves appear in nine different categories on the boys’ side, and seven on the girls.

Leading the way are Lyla Stuurmans, Aleera Kent, Cael Wilson, and Carson Field, who each pop up in three different events.

Hot on their heels are Aleksia Jump, Preston Epp, Jasmine Castellanos, Nick Guay, and Marquette Cunningham, with two appearances each.

Overall, 20 Wolves, which accounts for about a third of Coupeville’s roster, currently grace the Top 10.

Start of a new dynasty?

The Coupeville High School cross country squad sent eight runners to the line Saturday at the 1B/2B state meet in Pasco, and every one of them is eligible to return next season.

The Wolf boys qualified as a complete team for the first time since the late ’70s, while sophomore Noelle Western made it two-for-two in her short, but productive, running career.

With no seniors among the state participants, Coupeville is primed for even more success in the future.

And while none of the current crop of Wolves joined alumni Natasha Bamberger and Tyler King in bringing home individual state crowns Saturday, Elizabeth Bitting’s runners held up well on the 5,000-meter course at the Sun Willows Golf Course.

The CHS boys finished 10th in the team standings, with their top five runners stretched just one minute and 11 seconds apart.

That’s the fourth-best performance by a boys’ team Saturday.

“These boys!! Amazing!!!,” Bitting said. “After 46 years of missing state to finish 10th!

“They ALL ran so hard and pushed themselves to their limits!” she added.

“The look on all their faces running down the homestretch, it was obvious they left it all on the course.”

This marks the fourth time the Wolf boys have finished in the top 10 as a team at state, and the first since they went 9th, 5th, and 5th between 1975-1977.

Coupeville’s girls, who claimed 8th place as a team last year, also have an 8th in 1981 and a program-best 4th in 1982.

While the Wolf girls just missed on sending a complete team to state this time around, Western made her second trip to Pasco, joining Carson Field in being a repeat qualifier.

Both veterans bettered their performance from last season, even with Western fighting off a cold.

“It was a wet and slick course,” Bitting said. “But she pushed herself and finished strong.”

Pope John Paul II, led by state champ Ruby Henry, claimed the girls’ team title, holding off Garfield-Palouse 45-51.

Henry, just a freshman, nipped Leki Albright of Liberty Bell by three seconds to hit the tape first.

In the boys’ race, it was more of a blowout, with Liberty Bell junior Dexter Delaney finishing 41 seconds ahead of the field.

Valley Christian, a private school out of Spokane, held off Pope John Paul II for the team title, while Coupeville came within a fraction of finishing as high as 8th.

Covenant was one point ahead of Adna, which was two points in front of CHS once everything was totaled up.

Coupeville’s Northwest 2B/1B League rival, Mount Vernon Christian, finished 14th in the team standings, as the Wolves beat them at both tri-districts and state after the Hurricanes narrowly won the league title.

After being so strong in the ’70s and ’80s, the CHS cross country program was shut down in the ’90s and sat dormant for nearly two decades.

Individual runners such as Tyler King and Danny Conlisk trained and traveled with Oak Harbor or South Whidbey during the “lost years.”

But the Wolves didn’t fully reenter the harrier world until Athletic Director Willie Smith relaunched things in 2018.

Working alongside fellow coaches Natasha Bamberger, Luke Samford, and Paige Spangler, Bitting has been deeply involved since the rebirth.

Whether coaching at the middle or high school level, the running guru has been instrumental in helping the Wolves build back, step by step.

Looking ahead to season seven of this new era, Bitting can return every athlete who ran in Pasco, and 15 of the 18 who were on the roster this season.

Erica McGrath is the lone senior, while two foreign exchange students ran with the boys’ team.

There are also a number of standout 8th graders ready to make the jump after working with CMS coach Amber Wyman.

Even as one season ends, Bitting is ready to go again.

“I hope this instills in them that their hard work truly does pay off,” she said. “From the very beginning of the season they stuck with the pack mentality and only pushed themselves harder!

“This truly has been an amazing experience and I thank my lucky stars that everything just lined up this season.

“They, both girls’ and boys’ team, were ready for the challenge, bought into what I was preaching, their times dropped and look how they finished! That says it all!”

The big payback!

Garnering a measure of revenge, the Coupeville High School boys’ cross country team chased down Mount Vernon Christian Thursday at Tri-Districts.

The Hurricanes edged the Wolves by one point at the Northwest 2B/1B League championships a week ago.

Jump ahead seven days, move to Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, and Coupeville came out ahead 76-79 this time around.

That earned the Wolves 2nd place in a 16-team meet featuring schools from Districts 1, 2, and 3, and sends Coupeville’s boys to the state tournament as a complete unit Nov. 4 in Pasco.

The CHS girls claimed 5th place, so their team won’t advance, but sophomore Noelle Western made the cut as an individual runner by cracking the top 14 finishers.

Thursday’s meet drew 130 competitors to the 5,000-meter course.

Junior Isaac Betz of Mount Vernon Christian and freshman Ruby Henry of Pope John Paul II claimed individual titles, with PJP2 sweeping the team titles.

For the Coupeville boys, this will be their first trip to the biggest run of the year as a team since the Wolves claimed 5th place at state back-to-back in 1976 and 1977.

Fun fact about ’76.

Future school board director Don Sherman ran the trails for Coupeville that year, while his future wife, then known as Debbie Dire, competed at the same state meet for Cascade of Everett.

While the parents of Brad, Tony, and Bryan didn’t officially meet until later, apparently it was fated the farmer and teacher would unite and build a prairie empire.

In more recent times, individual male runners such as 2010 state champ Tyler King and recent star Danny Conlisk have made it to state, while the Wolf girls went as a team last season.

Thursday, it was time to go to the past for Coupeville’s lads, powered by big leg kicks down the stretch.

“The boys had tough competition in their race,” CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting said.

“Pope John Paul II is a powerhouse and ran an amazing race. It was a total battle royale for 2nd through 4th, just six points between us all — it’s a testament to the competition these boys brought to the race.”

Afterwards Bitting was approached by a rival who passed on words of congratulations.

“It was a major compliment to have a fellow coach approach me after the race and comment, Coupeville wasn’t even on my radar, but at mile one I took notice.

“You guys came out of nowhere. Congratulations! See you at Pasco.”

The first six Wolf boys to hit the line did so in sub-19 minutes, all landing in the top 27.

For Bitting, who has been the primary driving force behind the rebirth of cross country in Cow Town, it was a sublime moment.

“I cannot even describe the excitement we had when we saw they finished 2nd! OH MY GOODNESS!!!! So many high fives, so many hugs!!!”

A ferocious five-pack. (Photo courtesy Elizabeth Bitting)

Bitting also praised the MVC boys for their “awesome sportsmanship,” Coupeville Middle School running guru Amber Wyman for her support, and the Wolf girls for their grit.

“They persevered, pushed themselves and all ran a beautiful race,” Bitting said.

“Each and every girl dug deep and entered the final stretch with a kick through the finish line. I was so very impressed of them all!

“Super big shout out to Coach Wyman for always being there, supporting, cheering the team on and helping to navigate the craziness and fun-ness of it all!!! I LOVE HER!!!!!!

Coupeville cross country put five runners in the top 10 at Thursday’s league championship meet. (Elizabeth Bitting photo)

It came down to the wire.

The Coupeville High School boys’ cross country team put four runners in the top nine Thursday at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships but missed out on a team title by a single point.

Host Mount Vernon Christian held off the Wolves 39-40, while the Hurricane girls also edged Coupeville for the team crown by a 22-33 margin.

“What a rush!” said Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting. “To be separated by one point at the league championship is a testament to the hard work all these runners in our league put in.

“ONE POINT! They gave it their all!”

Runners from six schools competed on the 5,000-meter course, with Friday Harbor (66), Orcas Island (93) and Evangel Classical (114) rounding out the battle for the boys’ team title.

Only MVC and Coupeville fielded full rosters in the girl’s race.

Overall, 46 boys and 21 girls hit the tape, with Isaac Betz and Evangeline Fikkert of MVC capturing individual crowns.

Coupeville sophomore Noelle Western and junior Carson Field topped their squad, both claiming 4th place.

George Spear (5th), Ezekiel Allen (8th), and Landon Roberts (9th) also cracked the top 10, while eight of the nine Wolves who ran at last year’s NWL Championships set a PR this time around.

“Having four boys in the top 10 and one girl is amazing,” Bitting said. “They pushed themselves and it showed.”

Next up for the Wolves is Tri-Districts, which brings together harriers from District 1, 2, and 3 in a battle royal Thursday, Oct. 26 at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood.

The top four girls’ teams and top two boys’ teams at that event advance to the state meet Nov. 4 in Pasco.

If your team doesn’t qualify, you can still punch your ticket to the big dance as an individual.

The top 28 girls and top 14 boys earn slots.

“They gotta bring it next Thursday!” Bitting said, as she mentally mapped out a week of practice in advance of Tri-Districts.
