They persevered.

Running through less-than-stellar air, thanks to wildfire smoke sweeping the state, the Coupeville Middle School cross country harriers still ended their season with a bang.

Competing at the Cascade League Championships in Langley, the Wolves claimed 3rd place in the girls team standings, and 5th in the boys showdown.

King’s earned both team crowns at the seven-school event, which drew 160 runners to a 3,000-meter course.

Coupeville also claimed an unexpected prize, with 7th grader Alexandro Lo honored with the league’s first sportsmanship award.

Ever-enthusiastic cross country guru Elizabeth Bitting was thrilled with how her runners finished, with many setting PR’s in the final race of the season.

“These Wolves ran amazingly!” she said. “So proud of their efforts!”

But then a momentary pause as it sank in this was her final go-round with a team which attracted an astounding 30+ runners this season.

“What am I going to do with my down time now?” Bitting wondered.

Axel Marshall cracked the top 10 Tuesday afternoon.

Young Wolves cap oval season

“Ready to launch!”

The meet which never ends finally ended.

The two-day Cascade League Track and Field Championships — which has a five-day gap between sessions — wrapped up Wednesday at Lakewood, giving Coupeville Middle School a final chance to impress.

The Wolves came away with a pair of individual wins, thanks to 8th grader George Spear (800) and 6th grader Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump), with the team garnering 19 PR’s.

The victories come on the heels of a win in the 1600 by 8th grader Malachi Somes during the opening session May 26.

The seven-team meet brings an official end to the season for Coupeville and its compatriots.

“So many PR’s, and so many happy faces!”

Noelle Western delivered Coupeville’s best performance.

The circle is complete.

Ending the season where it also began, the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad competed Wednesday at the Cascade League Championships.

Meet host Langley swept both team titles during the 140-runner event, while Coupeville claimed fourth in the girls race, and sixth in the boys.

Individual titles went to Reed Atwood of Langley and Caleb Greenland of Lakewood.

Coupeville placed a runner on the awards stand, with 8th grader Noelle Western claiming 9th place in the girls race.

The Wolves sent 15 runners to the line, with eight of the nine who competed in the season opener coming back around to set a PR on the same course.

“It’s always nice to finish where we first started the season,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “So many PR’s, and so many happy faces!

“I am very proud of these athletes,” she added.

“I wish the 8th graders the best of luck in high school and I hope to see everybody else return in the fall! GO WOLVES!!!”
