Wolf cheer honors fall team

They’re heading inside, but first, awards for the work outside.

As the Coupeville High School cheer squad transitions from fall to winter sports, the Wolf spirit leaders took a moment Monday to honor their work on the football sideline.

Alysia Burdge earned the Coaches Award at the season-ending banquet, while Isabella Schooley accepted the Wolf Award.

Jacob Schooley (Most Improved) and Reina Reed (Spirit Award) also went home with hardware, while Makenna Jonker-Chambers and Hayley Thomas were acknowledged for their stellar work as co-captains.

Wolf cheer finds success, plans for more

Competition is heating up.

As they move into winter, the Coupeville High School cheerleaders will split time between sideline work and competing at events.

Saturday brought the Wolves to Puyallup, where they earned 2nd place in the “small non-tumbling class” at the Blue Fusion Cheer Competition.

The competitive cheer season runs from November through the state meet the first weekend in February, with weekend practices going since August.

Coupeville’s squad on the blue mats includes Abbigail Bond, Alysia Burdge, Miles Gerber, Jacob Schooley, Isabella Schooley, Makenna Jonker-Chambers, Pamela Morrell, Kassidy Upchurch, Hayley Thomas, Reina Reed, and Avery Williams-Buchanan.

Jayden Cooks rounds out the roster as team manager, with Jennifer Morrell and Tara Crouch working as coaches.

In addition to fine-tuning their competitive routines, the Wolves are also working towards being able to purchase cheer mats.

With a full set of mats, which consists of nine panels, CHS could host showcases and competitions.

Anthony Ford, Crystal Cruz, Sylvia Arnold and the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Association have provided support and financial assistance to the program, and the Wolves are halfway to their goal.

The team plans to reach out to community groups and cheer fans in the near future to see if anyone else is interested in sponsoring the purchase of more mat panels.

Help build cheer and dance programs

Do you cheer? Tumble? Dance?

Know someone who does?

Or just want to support the development of local talent?

Then take a moment to answer a survey designed to gauge interest in the immediate construction of a local high school level all-star cheer squad, as well as classes focusing on cheer, tumbling, dance, and more.

These classes range from ones for little children to adults, as well as athletes with special needs.

A group of Whidbey Islanders is also seeking experienced athletes looking to coach, volunteers to help with fundraising and advertising, and sponsors.

Donation of physical items such as spaces to train (high ceilings are a bonus) and help for athletes unable to participate because of financial restrictions are high on their list of things to do.
