As milestones go, it was a fairly quiet one.

Coupeville High School senior Hunter Smith already owns or shares seven football records, but late in last Friday’s home game against Charles Wright Academy, he pulled in yet a bit more of history.

His final snag of the game, on which he was denied a touchdown by a spectacularly blind ref, was his fifth catch of the game.

More importantly, it was the 100th reception of his stellar career.

While I can’t claim with absolute certainty he is the only Wolf to break the triple-digit receptions barrier, it seems to make absolute sense.

Smith has surpassed every CHS receiver in every category which matters, making it highly unlikely any of them reached the same milestone.

As Coupeville chases numerous team and individual offensive marks — senior QB Hunter Downes is angling for a few himself — the Wolves boast the #3 scoring offense among the eight Olympic/Nisqually League teams.

That number could take a large positive bounce this week, as CHS (2-2 overall, 0-1 in league play) heads to Vashon (0-4, 0-1).

The Pirates have the worst scoring defense in the league, and it’s not close, having been outscored 206-14 this season.

As you count down the hours until that game, take a gander at the season-to-date stats, as compiled by CHS coaches and posted on MaxPreps.

Keep in mind, though, that when you look at where Wolf players are ranked, it comes with one caveat — not all teams in the state are actively reporting stats.

Koby Schreiber wields a deadly racket. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

That moment when William Nelson starts to wonder why he didn’t pack a pair of sunglasses.

Braving the sun, Zach Ginnings prepares to launch the ball skyward for a serve.

“I am Thane Peterson! Feel my fury!!”

With a flick of his wrist, Mason Grove ruins a rival player’s afternoon.

And then Nick Etzell went all Incredible Hulk on everyone.

Can this really be the fall tennis season?

Seven matches into the campaign and not only hasn’t a single match come anywhere remotely close to being rained out, but it felt like summer Wednesday afternoon.

Taking advantage of the sun ‘n fun, the Wolf netters thrashed visiting Chimacum, while roving camera clicker John Fisken busied himself snapping for hours.

The pics above are courtesy him, and you can see tons more (Fisken finished in the triple digits) by popping over to the link below.

And remember, when you buy, you help finance college scholarships for CHS student/athletes.

Something to keep in mind.

Pedro Gamarra fought like a wild man Wednesday, pulling out a tough win at #1 singles. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

It was domination, pure and simple.

Which didn’t mean it always came easy, though.

The Coupeville High School boys tennis team took an important step Wednesday on the path to fighting for a third straight Olympic League championship.

Putting visiting Chimacum down hard, the Wolves rolled to a 7-0 win, evening their conference record at 1-1.

That pulls the Wolves back within a game of Klahowya (2-0) heading into a road match Friday with the Eagles.

Return from Silverdale with a victory and Coupeville would be tied for first, with the schools having split their first two meetings this season.

With Chimacum (0-2) being unable to mount a serious resistance, the title is fated to be a two-team race.

If CHS gets payback Friday, then Oct. 5, when Klahowya comes to Whidbey Island, would likely be a winner-take-all rumble with the league title at stake.

While the Cowboys aren’t anywhere close to being as dangerous as the Eagles, Chimacum did put up a strong battle in Wednesday’s premier match.

That one pitted Wolf foreign exchange student Pedro Gamarra against Port Townsend’s Isaiah Treibel.

The RedHawks don’t have a tennis program, so they have an agreement with Chimacum which allows a handful of players to swing a racket alongside their normal rivals.

Treibel, a strong player against the Wolves in the past, came out firing, but Gamarra didn’t wilt, mixing power with pluck.

The duo took turns lashing winners, with Gamarra kicking the ball soccer-style into the net on failed points, and the action seemed to relax the Spaniard and help him focus.

Despite trailing in both sets, he fought his way back again and again, finally felling Treibel in a second-set tiebreaker.

When the last point fell in, Gamarra’s American teammates whooped and hollered, causing the low-key netter to crack a quiet smile as he exited the court.

Other than in #1 singles, Coupeville romped, with five of the other 10 varsity sets played ending in a 6-0 win for the Wolves.

Complete Wednesday results:

Varsity:

1st Singles — Pedro Gamarra beat Isaiah Treibel 6-4, 7-6(7-5)

Jacob Zettle knows, when you gotta dance, you gotta dance. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Steve and Elaina Kiel are feelin’ it.

Justine McGranahan gives Zettle five stars (out of a possible five).

James Vidoni (left) and Kyle Rockwell (center) listen as Julian Welling expresses concern. “I’m just saying, he better have stretched first…”

John Rose debates unleashing a saucy flamenco of his own.

“Zettle set the bar, gentlemen. Get limber!”

Barbi Ford has the cops on speed dial. “This whole place starts dancing, I want a SWAT team and tear gas. I say the words “Electric Boogaloo,” you are go.”

Jordan Ford (right) ponders challenging his mom and unleashing a dance, dance revolution of his own.

When your volleyball team crushes their top foe in less than an hour, fans dancing in the aisles is not a huge surprise.

As Wolf backers celebrated Coupeville’s thrashing of Klahowya Tuesday, wanderin’ photo whiz kid John Fisken was busy snapping away, and the pics above are courtesy him.

I’m just here to write the cut-lines (yes, I do amuse myself, thanks for asking) and collect all the page hits.

It’s a living.

With a flick of her fingers, Zoe Trujillo sends another winner away to find a new home on the opposite side of the net. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

It’s not the sound of thunder, it’s just Kalia Littlejohn kickin’ the crud out of the soccer ball.

Maddie Vondrak (far left) knows exactly where the cameraman is hiding.

Raven Vick unleashes all the fury, all the power.

Wolf defender Mallory Kortuem gets the ball out of town as quickly as possible.

When Lauren Bayne goes for the ball, the smart rival simply backs off and says, “Yep, you got it. Just ignore me.”

Kyla Briscoe (left) warms up Mikayla Elfrank’s hittin’ hands during pre-game festivities.

Properly warmed-up, Elfrank gets medieval on the Eagles.

The action kept John Fisken hopping.

With volleyball and soccer games going on at the same time in Coupeville Tuesday, the intrepid photo god bounced up and down S. Main, hitting every activity, camera in hand.

The photos above are courtesy him, but are just the tip of the iceberg.

And, when you do, remember this — every purchase helps fund college scholarships for CHS student/athletes.

Plus, if he sells some pics, he’s even more likely to make the trek up from Oak Harbor the next time the Wolves are playing.
