Killer Kat’s school year was all that, and more.

Coupeville High School junior pitcher Katrina McGranahan shared 1A Olympic League softball MVP honors with Chimacum senior shortstop Shanya Nisbet when league coaches announced All-Conference picks.

The selection follows on the heels of McGranahan being tabbed league MVP during volleyball season.

With Mia Littlejohn winning co-MVP honors for soccer, CHS had at least a share of three of the four top awards given to female athletes by Olympic League coaches in 2016-2017.

The selection of McGranahan and Nisbet broke a two-year run by Klahowya’s Amber Bumbalough.

The Eagle junior pitcher/shortstop was MVP as a freshman and shared honors with Chimacum’s Ryley Eldridge last season.

McGranahan, who led Coupeville in virtually every offensive category, while also going 18-5 in the pitcher’s circle, was honored by league coaches for a third consecutive season.

Junior third-baseman Lauren Rose was also an All-Conference First-Team pick for the third time, while junior center fielder Hope Lodell was honored for a second time.

Junior shortstop Mikayla Elfrank, a first-time honoree, rounds out Coupeville’s All-League picks.

When CHS coaches handed out their own awards Friday, McGranahan and sophomore catcher Sarah Wright shared team MVP honors.

Also bringing home awards were Veronica Crownover (Offensive MVP), Rose (Defensive MVP), Tamika Nastali (Hustle Award), Kyla Briscoe (Most Improved), Scout Smith (Rookie of the Year) and Elfrank (Coaches Award).

Coupeville finished 19-5 after splitting four games in 26 hours at districts. It was the second-best record in program history.

To acknowledge his player’s accomplishments, Wolf head coach Kevin McGranahan lettered everyone on the roster.

“All of them did everything as a team. Practice, long bus rides and everybody played in varsity games this year,” he said. “It took the whole team to do what we did this year.”

Wolf seniors Taylor Consford (left) and Clay Reilly (right) played Thursday in All-State baseball feeder games in Bellingham. (John Fisken photos)

Kory Score joined the duo for a final day of high school baseball.

Taylor Consford was unstoppable.

The Coupeville High School senior capped his prep baseball career Thursday with an epic day at the A/B Northwest District All-State baseball feeder games in Bellingham.

Consford was a jack of all trades, tossing four shutout innings on the mound in the first game, then moving behind the plate to catch four innings in the nightcap.

He also ripped off six hits over the two games, piling up five singles and a triple across 16-1 and 26-1 wins by his Americans squad.

Two of Consford’s CHS teammates joined him in Bellingham, with Clay Reilly pulling time in the outfield in game one and Kory Score working at first-base in game two.

The duo found themselves on the opposite side of the field from Consford, playing for the Nationals squad.

Score ripped a single his first time up, and was nailed in the wrist by a pitch his second go-around.

Reilly grounded out four times, but the combination of his work in Thursday’s game and through the season for the Wolves earned him a nomination for the All-State series.

That event, which brings together seniors from all six high school classifications in Washington (4A-1B), is held in Yakima June 10-11.

The rosters for All-State are finalized after the last of 14 feeder games is played June 5.

Coupeville coach Chris Smith, having wrapped his first season at the helm of the Wolves, came away very happy with how his first group of seniors played in the spotlight.

“Taylor was clearly a standout player in the two games played,” he said. “I was very proud of how our players represented themselves and how they represented Coupeville baseball.”

Wolf QB Hunter Downes, seen here last spring, is gunning for several career school marks. (John Fisken photos)

Hunter Smith, his primary target, also has his eye on busting records.

The man in black (pants) fled into the record books, and the gunslinger followed.

As he prepares for his senior season, Coupeville High School quarterback Hunter Downes, the gunslinger in this story, is hot on the trail of his school’s QB records.

The man he’s pursuing is the guy helping shape him, Wolf offensive coordinator Brad Sherman, who threw for 3,613 yards and 33 touchdowns before graduating in 2003.

Downes, who opened spring practices with his teammates Tuesday, spent last weekend in Everett at a USA Football regional development camp.

The camp allows high school players to work on their skills and techniques with current NCAA coaches while also putting them in a pool for possible inclusion on the U.S. national team.

After missing all but two games of his sophomore year with an injury, Downes put up one of the best seasons in CHS history as a junior.

He threw for 1,569 yards and 17 touchdowns, missing the school’s single-season TD mark (18 by Joel Walstad in 2014) by a hair.

Downes did tie the school’s single-game TD record, dropping four against a tough Bellevue Christian defense on the road while playing on a slippery, rain-splattered turf.

That equaled a mark set by Wolf legend Corey Cross in 1971, and tied by Sherman in 2001.

With his precision passing, Downes helped his #1 target, fellow junior Hunter Smith, set school single-season records with 916 yards and 11 touchdown receptions.

The duo are ankling to shred the record board this fall, when they kick off their senior campaign Sept. 1 on the road against South Whidbey.

Downes, who has 1,841 yards and 18 TD’s in a little over a season of action, needs 1,773 yards and 16 TD’s as a senior to top Sherman’s career records.

Smith is even closer, with 1,335 yards and 13 TD’s in two seasons as a receiver.

He trails Chad Gale (1,345 and 17) by just 10 yards and four scores, while also needing three interceptions (he has 10 in his career) to pass Josh Bayne’s CHS career mark of 12.
