Boom go the bats, splat go the stats

They’re on a tear, and it shows on the stat sheet.

The Coupeville High School softball team has won seven of its last nine games heading into Tuesday’s regular-season finale at South Whidbey.

During that run the bats have been booming, and the runs have been shooting across home plate.

Seven starters are hitting .312 or better on the season, lead-off hitter Scout Smith has scored 35 times in 18 games, and, as a team, the Wolves have smacked nine home runs.

Well, 10 if you count the one a blind ump stole from Nicole Laxton…

As you prepare for Tuesday’s game, and the district tourney out there on the horizon, take a gander at season-to-date numbers:

Time to round up those stats

The season’s not complete without one final swing through the stat sheet.

The Coupeville High School baseball squad exited the playoffs Saturday, after pushing a pair of league champs hard.

With the losses to Northwest Conference kingpin Meridian and Emerald City League bigwig Overlake, the Wolves finished 7-14.

That was a big comeback, though, as Coupeville started the season 0-12.

A 4-3 win over arch-rival South Whidbey snapped the skid — and eventually denied the Falcons a chance to win the North Sound Conference title — and kicked off a seven-game winning streak.

CHS swept three-game sets from Sultan and Granite Falls to snare the final NSC playoff berth.

As they pack up the uniforms, bats, and balls until next spring, a look at final individual stats:

Wolf spikers close club season with a bang

A six-pack of Wolves ruled the volleyball world this weekend.

Coupeville High School stars Emma Smith, Ashley Menges, Maya Toomey-Stout, Zoe Trujillo, Scout Smith, and Hannah Davidson play for the Whidbey Volleyball Club 18U team, and they sparked that squad to a championship in the final tourney of the season.

Whidbey roared through pool and match play to claim 1st place in the Silver Bracket at the PSRVB regionals at Henry Jackson High School.

The team, which mixes players from several Whidbey Island high schools, finished second in pool play Saturday, then opened play Sunday by toppling the #1 seed in its bracket.

After taking a loss in their second match, the spikers bounced back to win two more bouts and walk away with the trophy.

Menges and Smith, who wrapped impressive four-year careers with the CHS volleyball program in the fall, graduate in June, but the other four Wolves are expected to anchor next year’s team.

The experience they picked up playing club will be invaluable, said their older teammates.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better tournament and team,” Menges said. “It’s definitely a different dynamic than school and having a lot of the Coupeville girls playing different positions made their game so much broader and they are so more well-rounded.”

She hailed Davidson, currently a CHS junior, for her play in the championship match.

“I would just like to throw out that Hannah had the best game I’ve ever seen her play in our last match,” Menges said.

Smith agreed with her fellow Wolf legend.

“This has been one of the best teams I’ve ever played with,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to play my last club tournament with.

“Also, the Coupeville girls have improved so much, and will make such a difference on the team next year.”

Always keep one eye on the standings

Playoff fever rages across the land.

Four of five spring sports – baseball, boys soccer, girls tennis, and track – are actively involved in postseason action, while softball is the lone activity still wrapping up regular-season play.

For Coupeville, the season came to an end Saturday night for the diamond men and the booters, as both were knocked out of their respective playoff rumbles.

Track is off to districts at Lynden Christian this coming Thursday and Saturday, with bi-districts and state still to come.

Wolf tennis hits the district tourney Tuesday and Wednesday in Granite Falls, with two singles players and two doubles teams vying to advance to bi-districts.

And softball, coming off a huge week which included an upset of Granite Falls, wraps its regular season Tuesday at South Whidbey.

Win that one, and the Wolves clinch at least a share of the league title, then get some time to rest as their district tourney doesn’t go down until May 16 and 18.
