Thursdays belong to the future.

Having scrambled at the last second to put together its own juniors softball squad, Central Whidbey Little League will kick off a 16-game schedule this coming week, with their home games played at Coupeville High School’s field.

Central Whidbey will play Anacortes, North Whidbey and South Whidbey in the four-team league, with home games on seven of the next eight Thursdays.

The team consists primarily of eighth graders from Coupeville Middle School, such as Scout Smith and Maya Toomey-Stout, with a few seventh graders like Mollie Bailey and Chelsea Prescott sprinkled across the roster.

Led by head coach Charlotte Young and assistant Connie Lippo, the squad will revive the Venom name.

Current high school stars like Katrina McGranahan, Sarah Wright and Lauren Rose went undefeated and earned a trip to state while wearing that name on their uniforms two years ago under Kevin McGranahan.

Last year, with most of that squad moving up to CHS, the few scattered remaining players had to travel to other towns to play.

Now the Venom is back and ready to attack again.

The schedule (all games start at 6 PM):

Tues-Apr. 12 @ South Whidbey
Thur-Apr. 14 North Whidbey
Tues-Apr. 19 @ Anacortes
Thur-Apr. 21 Anacortes
Tues-Apr. 26 @ North Whidbey
Thur-Apr. 28 South Whidbey
Tues-May 3 North Whidbey
Thur-May 5 @ South Whidbey
Tues-May 10 @ Anacortes
Thur-May 12 Anacortes
Tues-May 17 @ North Whidbey
Thur-May 19 South Whidbey
Tues-May 24 @ South Whidbey
Thur-May 26 North Whidbey

Hawthorne Wolfe

Hawthorne Wolfe was a key player all tourney.

“They showed the ability to beat every team they played.”

That was the assessment of veteran hoops coach Pat Kelley after he watched a plucky Coupeville 6th grade SWISH boys’ basketball squad, playing in its first tournament as a full unit, put up a strong effort this weekend against top-level competition.

While the Wolves, playing under the guidance of Nathan Barton and Ben Olson, finished 1-4 at the Tulip Tournament, they were in every game until the final stretch.

After knocking off Meridian Friday, Coupeville fell to Sedro-Woolley (27-15) and Everett AAU (33-20) Saturday, then were nipped Sunday by Meridian (40-29) and Everett (27-23).

Achieving a team goal, all eight Wolves on the roster scored in the tourney, with Caleb Meyer leading the way with 33.

Point guard and team captain Connor Barton, who topped Coupeville in assists and steals, was tabbed as the season MVP for “his leadership and elevating his entire team’s play.”

Rounding out the honorees, newcomer Miles Davidson was tabbed as the team’s tourney MVP.

Complete tourney stats:

Caleb Meyer — 33 points, 34 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals

Hawthorne Wolfe — 23 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 8 steals

Logan Martin — 18 points, 38 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocked shots

Connor Barton — 14 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, 12 steals, 2 blocked shots

Miles Davidson — 12 points, 31 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocked shots

Cody Roberts — 8 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 6 steals, 2 blocked shots

One win in the books, the Wolves prepare for weekend play.

There’s more than one star in the family.

A day after older brother Dalton snapped Coupeville High School’s all-time mark in the discus, Logan Martin captured his own magical moment.

Banging home a bucket in the waning moments Friday night, off of a pass from Miles Davidson, Martin lifted Coupeville’s 6th grade SWISH boys’ basketball squad to a huge 25-23 upset of Meridian.

The win, coming on the road at LaVenture Middle School in Mt. Vernon, was in a seeding game for the two-day Tulip Tournament, which kicks off Saturday.

Coupeville will open against Sedro-Woolley (11:15 AM tip) at La Conner Middle School.

Dedicating Friday’s game to teammate Bennet Boyles, who has been in and out of Children’s Hospital with an illness, the Wolves came out extremely scrappy Friday night.

Hawthorne Wolfe went for six points in the early going, and that, combined with buckets from Caleb Meyer and Martin, gave Coupeville a 10-0 lead.

The Wolves cooled a bit after that, but held on, with six of the eight players in attendance scoring.

Meridian rallied late, nailing a three-ball and taking advantage of the absence of Meyer, who fouled out in the fourth, to knot things at 23.

Davidson made off with a steal, however, feeding Martin for what would be the game-winning bucket.

After Meridian missed a pair of free throws which could have tied the game back up, speedy Wolf guard Connor Barton ran the clock out to cue the celebration.

Before foul trouble nailed him, Meyer paced Coupeville with eight points, five boards and two assists.

Wolfe banked home six, Martin knocked down four, Barton tickled the twines for three and Davidson and Danny Barajas each chipped in with a bucket to round out the scoring.

Coupeville hit the boards aggressively, with Martin (6), Barajas (6), Davidson (6), Wolfe (4), Cody Roberts (2) and Jacob Kendall (1) all snatching caroms.

middle school

Wolf 8th graders (l to r) Emma Mathusek, Scout Smith and Maya Toomey-Stout are all expected to make the leap to high school hoops next winter.

They closed strongly.

Bringing their season to an end a game earlier than expected Monday, the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball squads came within an errant pass or two of winning two of three on the road in Sequim.

Both of the Wolf varsity teams fell, while the 8th grade JV came away victorious.

Coupeville, which was scheduled to play 10 games this season, will only get nine in the books.

Port Townsend postponed a trip to Whidbey Mar. 10 because a power outage at Blue Heron Middle School cancelled classes that day.

While CMS coaches tried to work out a replacement date, BHMS administrators refused to reschedule, leaving the Wolf girls with one less game than expected.

In their final outing, the 8th grade JV was impeccable, strolling to a 29-26 win in a game limited to three quarters by the call of the ferry.

Cassidy Moody rained down 12 points — eight in the second quarter — while Megan Thorn tickled the twines for all eight of her points in the third quarter.

Tia Wurzrainer banked home five and Seraina Weatherford notched four to round out the scoring sheet.

The 8th grade varsity almost made it two-for-two, but a late rally fell just short and the Wolves succumbed 29-25.

Trailing by five with 1:30 to play, Coupeville pulled to within a single point, only to have two errant passes seal its fate at the very end.

“It was nearly a perfect ending,” said CMS 8th grade coach Bob Martin. “It was an exciting game to end the season.

“I’m excited to see that we have a lot of eighth graders moving up to high school next season!,” he added. “I’m very proud of them and am thankful for the opportunity to have coached them.

“Their work ethic, teamwork, and lack of individualism are admirable. I look forward to seeing their banners on the wall in the future.”

Noted defensive ball-hawk Avalon Renninger capped her middle school hoops career with a team-high 11, while Scout Smith (7), Hannah Davidson (6) and Emma Mathusek (1) chipped in to the scoring effort.

The CMS 7th graders, who played most of the season with a super-small roster, went out just as scrappy as ever.

Though they fell 46-13 to a very-deep Sequim team, the Wolves — who played the end of the game with just four players after Morgan Pease and Genna Wright fouled out — were still rumbling until the final buzzer.

“Final game was a good fight. We battled for the whole game,” 7th grade coach Ryan King said.

Chelsea Prescott capped the season with five points, giving her 97 in 8.5 games (11.4 ppg), best by any Wolf varsity player, 7th or 8th grade.

Pease dropped in four, Wright popped for three and Mollie Bailey sank a free throw.

“I am very proud of these girls for what they accomplished this season,” King said. “From beginning of the season to the end, they improved so much and it was a lot of fun to watch and a lot of fun to coach them.

“They fought in every game and really showed everyone that Coupeville is ready for any challenge in front of them,” he added. “I enjoyed being their coach this year.”

Final 7th/8th grade varsity scoring stats:

Chelsea Prescott 97
Avalon Renninger 60
