She’s off to an impressive start.

Coupeville Middle School 6th grader Tamsin Ward won 11 times, across four different events, in the just-concluded track and field season.

While middle school stats are notoriously hard to document (more on that in a second), her 2023 campaign ranks as the third-best put up by a Wolf athlete in the last 15 years.

Only Lindsey Roberts, with 18 wins, and state champ Alex Murdy, with 12, had more in a single spring, and both accomplished that feat as 8th graders.

Danny Conlisk (10), who went on to win two state titles as a high school runner, is fourth, while Nick Laska notched nine victories as a 7th grader this spring, tying him with Makana Stone at #5 on the CMS single-season list.

Now, here’s where we talk about why it’s nearly impossible to fully document what may have happened in the past.

While athletic.net makes modern life much easier, compiling track and field activity from across the country, it’s only been with us since 2004.

Originally released just in Oregon (not a state we live in), its Coupeville Middle School-related data doesn’t go back any further than 2008.

So, while I can document 87 Wolves who have earned a medal at the high school state track and field championships — dating back to 1963 — only 39 of those competitors have readily available middle school results.

But wait, CMS might have something in its own records … ha ha, just kidding. No one held on to anything.

So, while Tyler and Kyle King have 11 and 10 state meet medals, respectively, and Natasha Bamberger won five state titles, they and other “early” contenders such as Jeff Fielding and Joy Hack aren’t part of this project.

Unless someone has some handwritten notes stashed in a box out in a barn.

Until then, the best seasons by a CMS track and field athlete between 2008-2023 are listed below.

The list goes 12 deep, and not 10, because of a three-way tie at #10.

The campus will be the same, but everything else will be (slightly) different.

Coupeville Middle School 8th graders officially become high schoolers Wednesday, with a “passages” ceremony set for 6:00 PM in the school PAC.

The Class of 2027 is 57 deep, though that number is almost certain to change between now and graduation.

Some may come, some may leave, but it’s a group deep in promising athletes and stellar students.

Thanks to Coupeville High School playing sports in the 2B classification, three 8th graders have already played varsity softball games while still attending middle school classes.

That trio — Haylee Armstrong, Capri Anter, and Melanie Wolfe — have an early advantage, but two others — Jack Farrell and Matthew Gilbert — also played at the high school level as 8th graders.

That duo suited up for the Wolf JV baseball squad.

But whether they’ve already played high school ball, or vied at the middle school level, or pursued other non-sports interests, the future is bright for the Class of ’27.

Kennedy O’Neill soars to glory.

No more meets, but a few photos left to deal with.

The Coupeville Middle School track and field team wrapped its season last week with the Cascade League Championships, and today we offer up the remaining pics we had still stashed away.

The action photos are from Wolf Mom Ana Oliveira, the coach portraits snapped by John Fisken.

Ready to launch.

Wolf coach Amber Wyman guided her team to a strong finish.

It’s an event so big it takes two trips to Lakewood to complete.

Coupeville Middle School track and field athletes officially wrapped their season Wednesday at Day #2 of the Cascade League Championships.

The seven-team royal rumble started May 25, with a ton of prelims and a couple finals, then athletes came back to finish things off on the final day of the month.

The big highlight for Coupeville Wednesday was a win in the high jump from 7th grader Wyatt Fitch-Marron, who soared to an even five feet.

But his triumph wasn’t the only bright spot, as numerous Wolves captured PR’s and CMS nailed down a pair of 2nd place finishes.

Wolf 6th grader Collin Mirabile was runner-up in the shot put, a feat matched by a 4 x 100 relay squad made up of 7th graders Nick Laska, Beckett Green, Roger Merino-Martinez, and Nathan Niewald.

Regardless of where they placed in the standings, every Wolf in competition earned some praise from their coaches.

“Our athletes continued to perform well during our district finals today,” said Jon Gabelein.

“Our 8th grade athletes will be strong additions to the high school track program next year,” he added.

“While the majority of our athletes are 6th/7th grade students this year and provide our program with a great foundation next year.”

While the season is done, the future is a bright one for the young Wolves.

“We are proud of all they accomplished this season,” said fellow CMS coach Amber Wyman. “And I am sure they will continue to improve.”

Tamsin Ward elevates on her way to winning a league title in the high jump. (Jon Gabelein photo)

Tamsin Ward is starting to get historical.

The Coupeville Middle School 6th grader soared over the high jump at four feet, six inches Thursday in Lakewood, winning the title at day #1 of the two-day Cascade League Championships.

That mark is four inches higher than Ward’s previous PR and pulls her within eight inches of the best effort ever thrown down by a Coupeville High School female athlete.

The CHS girls record of 5-02 was set in 1999 by Yashmeen Knox, while current Wolf senior Ryanne Knoblich has cleared 5-00 heading into her final state meet.

While Ward won’t make her high school track debut until spring 2026, Thursday’s win already puts her in the company of some of the town’s most-successful female athletes.

The victory is her 11th in her debut season, a mark topped in the last decade only by 8th graders Lindsey Roberts (22 wins in 2015) and Makana Stone (12 wins in 2012).

Ward’s big jump made some noise, but her fellow Wolves also soared, racking up 46 PR’s at the seven-team meet.

Thursday’s event was a mix of prelims and finals, with the season-ending day #2 of the championships set for Wednesday, May 31 back at Lakewood.

CMS coaches basked in the positive afterglow of a day well spent while the bus wound its way back to Whidbey.

“The athletes represented Coupeville well today,” Jon Gabelein said. “We had a great group and each of them showed why they were one of our district’s best performers in their events.

“We look forward to the district finals next week.”

That was a feeling shared by fellow Wolf coach Amber Wyman.

“I’m so proud of these athletes!” she said. “They really showed off the weeks of work they have put in.

“They worked hard, had great sportsmanship and a lot of PR’s!”
