Coupeville Middle School volleyball coach Sarah Lyngra is also a piano teacher, and is sharing lessons from a book she wrote for young children.

She’s making video lessons for each chapter of the book, and is sharing them for free on the internet.

Lyngra is putting up a new story each day, as she works through the 10 lessons offered in her book.

School’s out, but creativity blooms everywhere.

While the current shutdowns are keeping Coupeville students away from the classroom, that hasn’t stopped them from writing, drawing, painting, and finding multiple ways to express themselves.

The photos above capture the Parker sisters — Skylar, Brynn, and Avery — showcasing their artistic muses.

Erin Locke can’t work with her students face-to-face right now, but she’s still teaching.

The Coupeville Middle School PE guru and volleyball coach is one of many on the outside looking in as Washington state schools go through at least a six-week shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But Locke is still preaching hard work and staying in shape, and she’s jumped to the internet to interact with the world.

So, grab your socks, your music, and get to work.

Vie for past glory

Welcome to the digital arena.

With athletes driven inside by the ongoing battle with coronavirus, you have to find your competitions where you can.

Today, thanks to records kept by athletic.net, we present the “Coupeville Middle School Virtual Olympics,” featuring Wolf athletes from 2009-2019 – the seasons covered by the site.

There are 98 medal winners (51 girls and 47 boys) with Lathom Kelley and Chris Battaglia leading the way with five medals apiece.

In terms of standing on top of the podium, however, no one can match Makana Stone and Alex Murdy, who each bring home four gold medals.

Others to claim multiple titles include Lindsey Roberts, Emma Smith, Carolyn Lhamon, Danny Conlisk, Jared Helmstadter, Kelley, and Battaglia, who all exit with a pair of golds.

Before we get to the stats, a couple of quick side notes.

One, there are a couple of events where there aren’t a gold, silver, and bronze winner, as only 1-2 people were listed by athletic.net.

Which is probably far from reality, but we go with what we have.

As you go through the top times and throws and jumps, special props to Savina Wells, bronze medal winner in the high jump, as she’s the only 6th grader to crack the top three in any event.

And yes, we’re going to do a high school meet next.

Local hoops stars earn state berth

Some of Coupeville’s finest are at the big dance.

CMS student Connor Weaver and CHS grads Lucas Etzell and Dagny Schellenberg all play basketball for the South Whidbey Wind, which qualified two teams for this weekend’s Special Olympics Winter Games in Wenatchee.

The opening ceremonies are Friday, with games beginning Saturday.

If either South Whidbey squad wins the state tourney, they advance to nationals.

Weaver, who has played several seasons with the Wind, helped guide his team to 2nd place at districts in late January.

He then came back around to hit crucial shots in a February game in which the Wind won a gold medal and punched their ticket to the state games.
