Chayse Van Velkinburgh didn’t spend too much time sitting on the couch this weekend.

The Coupeville Elementary School fifth grader delivered strong performances in two sports while bouncing between different towns.

When he was in Redmond, Van Velkinburgh played in a state soccer cup game, bashing several shots on goal while leading the rampage on offense.

Take him off the pitch, and rush him back to Mount Vernon, and he played in four basketball games at the Tulip Days Tournament.

Van Velkinburgh poured in 55 points, including 17 against Lummi Island in the day’s final matchup, helping spark his team to the 5th grade title.

Most of his team’s games were actually against 6th grade squads, as they played up after several 5th grade teams dropped out of the tourney.

A popular teacher at Coupeville Elementary School has been diagnosed with leukemia, and her friends and co-workers are rallying around her.

Jackie Gelston teaches third grade at CES and was formerly employed in the South Whidbey School District.

She and husband Chris have two daughters — one in college and one attending middle school — and the family has been a vital part of the local 4H community.

As she begins her fight against cancer, Gelston is expected to be in the hospital for an extended period of time.

She will not be able to finish the 2021-2022 school year, and is not expected back in time to start the 2022-2023 campaign.

Fellow Coupeville teachers Corinn Parker and Christi Messner are spearheading campaigns to help their colleague and her family.

Parker launched a meal train, which had an overwhelming response, while Messner has posted a GoFundMe to allow people to help the Gelston family with medical costs.

“We are a small group of friends trying to help a fellow friend,” Messner wrote.

“We want to raise funds so she does not have to worry about the day-to-day expenses of her family and medical bills as she fights.

“We want to relieve as much stress from Jackie as we can.”

The Coupeville Elementary PTA is looking for parents who want to help local students succeed.

The organization is relaunching and would like to add as many new members as possible.

It’s just $15 to sign up, and there are numerous ways for parents to make an impact.

“We understand that not all families can volunteer their time, but there are many other ways families can help,” said PTA leaders in a promotional push on their Facebook page.

“We would love to hear your voices and ideas at meetings on what families/staff would like from the PTA.

“We look forward to meeting past and future families in the new year.”

The PTA helps with programs such as “Readers are Leaders” and the Scholastic Book Fair, while also bestowing grants to teachers.

“Books! We’re getting books!!” (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

You can fuel book love.

Make a donation of $5 or more to a fundraiser being run by Coupeville Elementary teacher Christi Messner, and the money will go to make sure all of her students have a new book to take home each month during the coming school year.

“Scholastic is an amazing company that provides low cost books to students and teachers,” Messner said. “Sadly, times are changing and many families cannot afford to purchase these books to have at home.

“Print rich environments aren’t the norm at many homes anymore,” she added. “How amazing would it be if ALL of my students could receive one free book every month?!”

Deeply-committed teachers like Messner, whose own daughter Katie will be a freshman at CHS this fall, continue the work embraced by my mother, who worked as a children’s librarian when I was younger.

The book you buy today may fuel the birth of the teacher or librarian of tomorrow.

Or if not, your donation will still provide a ray of sunshine in the life of Coupeville’s youngest superstars.

“We would love to pass on the love of reading and provide books for them to have at home,” Messner said. “Being a teacher, the greatest joy is watching students fall in love with books.”
