They’re going to need the big van.

With one half of the West Central District 3 track and field meet in the books, 11 Coupeville High School athletes have punched their ticket to the state meet in Cheney.

Five of those Wolves have qualified in more than one event, and CHS still has another day to add to that list.

Coupeville returns to Bremerton Saturday morning for Day 2 of the district meet.

When it does, CHS will be in the mix for two team titles, as well.

Both the Wolf girls and boys sit in second place among the nine 1A schools competing.

Bellevue Christian leads 72-54 in the boys race, while Charles Wright Academy is up 73-55 on the Wolf girls.

Over the course of several hours Friday afternoon, the Wolves opened the meet by vanquishing foes from the Olympic and Nisqually Leagues en route to winning five district crowns.

Makana Stone (400), Dalton Martin (discus), Jacob Smith (100) and both the girls 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay squads (Lindsey Roberts, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Stone) stood atop the awards podium.

A top four finish at districts is what is needed to earn a trip to state (May 26-28).

Joining the district winners in being Eastbound are Roberts (2nd in the 100 hurdles), Skyler Lawrence (3rd/shot put), Martin (3rd/javelin), Mitchell Carroll (3rd/triple jump), Jordan Ford (3rd/pole vault), Connor Thompson (4th/triple jump) and Henry Wynn (4th/1600).

Especially noteworthy were Ford and Martin, who both had stellar performances.

Ford smashed his own school record in the pole vault, raising it by three inches, while Martin launched the javelin almost 11 feet(!!) further than his previous-best.

Lauren Grove

Jacob Smith

Jacob Smith, seen here during a relay at sub-districts, has the 7th fastest time in the 200 among all 1A runners.

The magnificent seven continues to ride high.

With just two meets left in the track and field season (districts and state), Coupeville has seven athletes who currently own one (or more) of the best marks set in 1A this year.

Senior Makana Stone is the leader of the pack, with Top 10 times in two individual events as well as two relays.

One of those relay squads — the 4 x 200 girls — was nudged out of a top spot over the weekend.

After sitting #1 for much of the way, the Wolves (1:47.00) are now .22 of a second behind Cascade (Leavenworth), which posted its time of 1:46.78 at the Caribou Trail League Meet Saturday.

What does that mean? Showdown in Cheney in two weeks!

Of course, the Wolves can always move back up to the top at this weekend’s district meet in Bremerton, as well.

As strategy is planned, and the final days of the season unfold, take a quick moment to ogle where the Wolves stand as of May 16:

Girls:

400 — Makana Stone (2nd in 1A) 58.55

800 — Stone (8th in 1A) 2:21.89

4 x 100 — Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt (5th in 1A) 51.10

4 x 200 — Grove, Roberts, Hurlburt, Stone (2nd in 1A) 1:47.00

Boys:

200 — Jacob Smith (7th in 1A) 23.01

300 Hurdles — Lathom Kelley (5th in 1A) 41.48

Discus — Dalton Martin (3rd in 1A) 161-07

The curtain goes up tomorrow night.

The annual Mr. CHS pageant hits the stage Wednesday (7 PM) in the Coupeville High School PAC, and the dollar bills will (hopefully) rain down.

A fundraiser for the Class of 2016, the event will feature a who’s-who of Wolves taking the stage to show of their diverse talents and (possibly) rock a few frocks.

Every dollar is a vote, and the action promises to live up to previous years.

In the last hours before showtime, contestants worked with CHS cheer coach Cheridan Eck Tuesday to fine-tune their moves.

Along for the ride, camera in hand, was wanderin’ photo man John Fisken, who provides us with the classy pics seen above.

The Magnificent Seven still rides high.

As track and field teams move towards the start of the postseason, the competition is getting ever more cutthroat, and it shows up when you look at the top 10 lists.

A week ago, 10 Wolves could claim a time or distance which put them among the best 1A had to offer.

Seven days later, three of those CHS athletes — Danny Conlisk (1500), Jakobi Baumann (3000) and Jordan Ford (pole vault) have been bumped, through no fault of their own.

For the moment, at least.

But while the list is an ever-changing beast, seven Coupeville athletes are holding strong, led by senior Makana Stone, who appears four times — twice as an individual, twice as a relay runner.

And one of those relay squads, the 4 x 200 girls team of Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Stone and Sylvia Hurlburt, remains on target to do something that has happened only once in school history — win a state title.

Currently ranked #1, and by almost a full two seconds, they are the team to beat going forward through league, district and state meets.

While CHS has multiple state track title winners in individual events, the only time the Wolves have brought home a title in a relay event was in 2006, when Chris Hutchinson, Jon Chittim, Kyle King and Steven McDonald won the 4 x 400.

Wolves who have one of this year’s 10 best performances in 1A:

Girls:

400 — Makana Stone (6th in 1A) 1:00.78

800 — Stone (7th in 1A) 2:21.89

4 x 100 — Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt (4th in 1A) 51.10

4 x 200 — Grove, Roberts, Stone, Hurlburt (1st in 1A) 1:47.00

Boys:

200 — Jacob Smith (9th in 1A) 23.08

300 hurdles — Lathom Kelley (4th in 1A) 41.48

Discus — Dalton Martin (3rd in 1A) 158-05

Jacob Smith has joined the party.

The Coupeville High School sophomore set a PR in the 200 Thursday, and his jump forward in time (or, technically, his decrease in time) propelled him into exclusive territory.

He now sits with the sixth-fastest time in the event among all runners in 1A this season.

That lands him in our semi-weekly wrap-up of Wolf track and field athletes who have times or distances which put them among the top 10 performances in Coupeville’s classification.

It’s currently a ten-pack, with six Wolf boys and four girls, all headed up by the fastest 4 x 200 girls relay team in the land.

So, without further ado, CHS Top 10 performers through Apr. 23:

Girls:

400 — Makana Stone (5th in 1A) 1:00.78

800 — Stone (4th in 1A) 2:21.89

4 x 100 — Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt (4th in 1A) 51.10

4 x 200 — Grove, Roberts, Stone, Hurlburt (1st in 1A) 1:47.00

Boys:

200 — Jacob Smith (6th in 1A) 23.08

1500 — Danny Conlisk (10th in 1A) 4:45.09

3000 — Jakobi Baumann (10th in 1A) 11:46.14

300 Hurdles — Lathom Kelley (4th in 1A) 41.48

Shot Put — Dalton Martin (9th in 1A) 45-03

Discus — Dalton Martin (3rd in 1A) 158-05
