After intensive work with the best throwing coach in the biz (that would be the shortie wearing the ribbon), Coupeville senior Emma Smith smashed her PR in the discus Thursday at districts. (Konni Smith photo)

Two Coupeville High School track records fell Thursday, while another one came dangerously close to finally being cracked after 33 years.

Toss in three titles and nine PR’s, and day one of the district meet was a roaring success for the Wolves.

Competing under the scorching sun at Lynden Christian High School, CHS senior Danny Conlisk and junior Maya Toomey-Stout both shattered school records in the 100.

Toomey-Stout, living up to her nickname of “The Gazelle,” got historical, running a 12.84 in her race.

Coupeville’s previous best was 12.89, set by legendary Wolf track star Janiece Jenkins back in 2005.

Conlisk was also on fire under the burning sun, winning the 100 and 400, plus running a leg on a triumphant 4 x 100 relay squad.

That unit, which included Tiger Johnson, Sean Toomey-Stout, and Jean Lund-Olsen, overcame a bad hand-off to blitz the field in 44.16 seconds, missing a school mark set in 1986 by just 0.02.

While they couldn’t get that mark (yet), BOTH Conlisk and Lund-Olsen took down Jacob Smith’s year-old school record in the 100.

Before graduating last year, Smith ran 11.12 in the event, erasing a mark which had stood since ’87.

This time around, Conlisk, a senior, out-leaned Lund-Olsen, a junior, nipping his running mate by the narrowest of margins at 11.04 to 11.06.

Both Wolves are assured of advancing to next week’s bi-district meet, the last stop before state, as the top four at districts move forward.

Though any CHS athletes outside the top four don’t need to despair just yet.

District 2, which is just the Emerald City League, gets three automatic qualifiers, which when added to the four from District 1 (Coupeville’s North Sound Conference and the Northwest League), gets us up to seven.

Every event at bi-districts, held May 16 and 18 at Coupeville, will go 16 deep, however, so entries 9-16 will be pulled from the best remaining performances from the two district meets.

The Wolves return to Lynden Saturday to wrap up districts, first, though, with most of the throwing events, a ton of relays, and an assortment of running races still to be determined.

At the mid-point, the Meridian boys and King’s girls are atop the team standings.

Coupeville sits 3rd and 4th, respectively, in the 10-team royal rumble, with the boys just 17 points off Meridan and the girls 26.5 points back of King’s.

One of Coupeville’s finest is on his way to a bigger stage.

Danny Conlisk, who has had a meteoric rise, both in the classroom and the athletic arena, signed a college letter of intent Friday to run track for the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

The school competes at the NCAA D-II level and its sports programs stretch back to 1895.

Originally known as the Longhairs, its athletic teams now operate as the Hardrockers, paying tribute to the school’s mining background.

Originally an NAIA school, SDSM&T joined the NCAA in 2013 and currently competes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

And, in case you were wondering, the Hardrocker mascot is named Grubby the Miner.

The more you know.

Conlisk, a captain in cross country and track for Coupeville, received an athletic scholarship from SDSM&T, and will also get financial help from the GI Bill.

He will compete just in track in college, both during indoor and outdoor seasons.

During his time at CHS, Conlisk served a term as the student body rep on the school board, and plans to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

After making huge strides with both the high school track team, and the Kitsap Fliers club running team, the speedy Wolf was tracked by SDSM&T coaches, who made sure he knew they were interested.

After a trip to see the school, it was an easy choice.

“They grabbed his interest and Danny didn’t want to be just a number at a school,” mom Dawnelle said. “He wanted a smaller school that was engineering-focused.”

Currently one of the fastest 1A runners in the state in the 100, 200, and 400, the Coupeville senior is making his final run at prep track glory.

Conlisk already has three state meet medals to his credit, with his best finish 2nd in the 400 as a junior.

He also claimed 5th in the same event as a sophomore, and was part of a 4 x 400 relay unit which took 5th during his junior season.

While running for the Fliers, Conlisk advanced to the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympics Championships in the 400.

Freshman Alana Mihill had plenty to smile about after setting a PR in the 3200.

Wolf coaches dream about their beds after a long day.

Mallory Kortuem shattered her school record in the pole vault, raising her PR by three inches.

Sean Toomey-Stout, who won league titles in the long jump and 4 x 100 relay, gets some love.

They came, they saw, they more than held their own.

The Coupeville High School track and field squad won eight events, set 24 PR’s and established a new school record in the pole vault Thursday while competing in the inaugural North Sound Conference Championships.

Along the way, the Wolves claimed 2nd in the girls team standings and 3rd in the boys.

King’s topped the league’s six schools in the girls battle with 192 points, with Coupeville (102), South Whidbey (98), host Granite Falls (76), Cedar Park Christian (57), and Sultan (9) rounding out the field.

On the boys side, South Whidbey nipped King’s by the thinnest of margins, winning the team title 142.5-142.

Coupeville (109.5), CPC (69), Granite (41), and Sultan (20) filled out the remainder of the stat sheet.

The Wolves were led by senior Danny Conlisk, who captured league titles in the 200 and 400, while also running a leg on the winning 4 x 100 relay team.

He narrowly missed out on a fourth title when CHS teammate Jean Lund-Olsen nipped him by 0.01 in the 100.

Other Wolf league champs included Emma Smith (shot put), Maya Toomey-Stout (long jump), Koa Davison (high jump), and Sean Toomey-Stout (long jump).

While she narrowly missed out on a league title, junior pole vaulter Mallory Kortuem continued to lay waste to her own school record in the event.

The Wolf junior soared eight feet, six inches Thursday, topping her best previous effort by a solid three inches.

Next up for Coupeville is the district meet, which goes down May 9 and 11 at Lynden Christian.

Things are getting tense.

With the regular season wrapping Thursday, the Coupeville High School track and field team is on the cusp of kicking off the postseason.

As they prep for the league meet, which is followed by districts, bi-districts, and state, those Wolves fighting for spots atop the leader board are having to fight for every .001.

With May just a few days away, Coupeville has athletes in the top 10 for 1A in eight different categories, with senior Danny Conlisk sitting #1 in the 200.

The other highlight?

Both CHS girls relay teams moved up in the standings after strong performances in the regular season finale.

Small town, big results.

Staring down runners from every state classification at the 112-team Nike Eason Invitational in Snohomish Saturday, a duo of Coupeville runners more than held their own.

CHS senior Danny Conlisk, going toe-to-toe with the best from 4A-1B, claimed two medals, finishing second in the 400 and seventh in the 200.

His teammate, junior Jean Lund-Olsen, didn’t make it out of the prelims in the 100 or 200, yet still set a PR in the first race and ran some of the fastest times any 1A runner has netted in 2019.

Conlisk went straight to the finals in the 400, entering as the #3 seed, then beat the pre-race predictions.

His time of 50.16 seconds was a season-best, narrowly missing his PR of 49.70.

The only foe he couldn’t catch was Ethan Willems of 4A Glacier Peak, a junior who has returned after missing a season with a torn ACL to be the fastest runner in the entire state in the 400.

In the 200, Conlisk busted out a PR (22.55) in the prelims, then ran 23.06 in the final.

He’s ranked #1 in the 200 and #2 (by 0.02 of a second) in the 400 among all 1A runners.

Lund-Olsen just missed the cut in the 100, finishing 12th in a personal-best 11.31 seconds, then claimed 19th in the 200 prelims in 23.18.

He was in the top half of both events, which had 41 and 43 runners in the prelims, respectively.

With one more regular meet before the postseason begins, Lund-Olsen is ranked #3 in 1A in both the 100 and 200.
