Monday afternoon was a busy time in the Coupeville Middle School gym, as the Wolves faced off with visiting Port Townsend, drawing in a mix of fans and paparazzi.

Put ’em on the court and they will take care of business.

Capturing victories hasn’t been the problem for the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad this season. It’s getting teams not to cancel on them.

Friday night was originally going to be the third time an opponent begged off playing, but at the last minute Chimacum decided it did have enough players to take the floor.

Cue the hungry Wolves, who seized advantage of any chance to play, and promptly rolled their hosts 41-22.

The win lifts Coupeville’s young guns to 6-2 overall, 2-0 in Olympic League play.

Or 8-2, 4-0 if you give the Wolves forfeit wins for the times Port Townsend and Chimacum bailed on them earlier this season…

Friday night, CHS rode a balanced offensive attack — nine girls scored, led by Ema Smith’s game-high 11 — and, other than a third-quarter slow-down, was markedly the superior team.

A 12-4 lead after one became a 22-7 bulge by halftime, then, after a two-point bump in the road in the third, Coupeville closed on a 17-9 surge in the fourth.

“Overall, we moved the ball pretty well on offense,” said Wolf coach Amy King. “Everyone got shots up and kept looking for openings.”

After falling into their third-quarter nap, the Wolves got a wake-up call from Nicole Lester, who all but ripped a Chimacum player’s head clean off her shoulders while retrieving a rebound.

“That seemed to be the spark the JV needed to take a breath and regain our game,” King said.

Ema Smith, who filled up the stat sheet with seven rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots, set up Emma Mathusek twice for quick buckets, while Avalon Renninger and Tia Wurzrainer were ball-hawks on defense.

Coupeville’s sophomore swing players — Ema Smith and Sarah Wright — were key to the team finding, and holding its groove.

Sarah didn’t score a lot but always adds an energy to the court that is necessary to keep us going,” King said. “Ema proves every night why she is a leader on and off the court.

“She talks, explains, encourages and shows through example,” she added. “She really stepped up and got the team working together in that last quarter.”

Mathusek and Maya Toomey-Stout each dropped in six points to back Ema Smith’s 11, while Scout Smith rattled home five.

Renninger (4), Wright (4), Ashlie Shank (2), Lester (2) and Maddy Hilkey (1) rounded out the attack, with Lester snatching five boards and Wurzrainer pilfering two steals.

Hannah Davidson’s swan song was a gem.

Playing in her final game as a Wolf before a move to California, the Coupeville High School freshman powered her JV girls’ basketball squad to a huge road win Tuesday night.

Davidson dropped in 10 points, snatched 15 rebounds, rejected a pair of shots and capped things by crashing hard to the floor in pursuit of a loose ball in the final seconds of a 26-17 victory against host Klahowya.

Hannah gave her teammates every thing she had,” CHS coach Amy King said. “A lot of great memories.”

The win, Coupeville’s third straight, lifts the Wolves to 3-1 overall, 1-0 in 1A Olympic League play.

To get there, CHS had to overcome a long trip to Silverdale, a late start (the JV played second) and a shorter roster than normal.

Maya Toomey-Stout and Brittany Powers were out, while Nicole Lester is fighting through a hurt ankle.

But, after a very slow start — Coupeville trailed 4-1 after a less-than-explosive first quarter — the Wolves found their groove and brought the Eagles crashing down.

An 11-2 advantage in the second quarter gave CHS the lead, while an 11-6 Wolf run in the third sealed Klahowya’s fate.

“We started off very slow. They got shots off, we got a little lost and just slower feet than normal,” King said. “Second quarter hit and things changed.”

Scout Smith finally broke the seal on the hoop late in the first, notching a free throw, then the fireworks exploded during the next eight minutes.

Employing their “Powerhouse Group” of big bangers Davidson, Ema Smith and swing player Sarah Wright, the Wolves “really riled things up.”

“Between the three, we got a much needed boost,” King said. “The defense was more dynamic and louder, the offense moved better and we were able to hit the posts on some great passes.”

Ashlie Shank and Maddy Hilkey joined the trio on the floor, and that lineup, which switched from a zone defense to man-to-man, lit up the scoreboard.

“It was the magical change,” King said. “We had a lot more shots go up, they got less rebounds – on the press break, we moved the ball up the floor much better and controlled.”

The game also became much more physical, on both sides of the ball, but especially on Klahowya’s.

“This quarter became the first of high fouls,” King said. “We were getting hit, hugged, knocked down and arms slapped while shooting.

“At one point, Hannah had a Klahowya defender around her neck,” she added. “Hannah, Ema and Sarah seemed to have  a contest going to see who could get the most free throws as we shot 15 in that quarter alone.”

Coupeville responded by clamping down on defense, with Tia Wurzrainer and Emma Mathusek stepping in to put considerable pressure on the Eagle ball-handlers.

With three Klahowya players fouling out in the fourth quarter and the clock ticking down (Coupeville had to leave by 7 PM to catch a ferry), the final stages of the game “seemed to take forever.”

“Time just slowed down,” King said. “That being said, we’re extremely happy for the win.”

Davidson paced the Wolves with a game-high 10 points, while Wright knocked down six and Ema Smith swished four.

Scout Smith (3), Avalon Renninger (2) and Lester (1) rounded out the scorers.

Ema Smith doesn’t come to the party. Ema Smith IS the party.

The eternally bubbly Coupeville High School sophomore, who celebrates a birthday today, is one of the most entertaining student/athletes in Wolf Nation.

One of the most genuinely good-natured, friendly, warm people you are likely to meet, Smith is a delight.

She’s also a pretty darn good athlete, regardless of the sport.

From soccer to basketball to softball, when she’s been healthy, Ema is front and center.

A scrapper who’s willing to pound on a rival in pursuit of the ball, before coming back to giggle on the bench with her teammates, she’s packed with energy and ready to rumble.

In the relatively short time she and her family have graced Coupeville, she (and they) have settled in nicely, and it’s hard to remember a time when Ema wasn’t lighting up the prairie.

On the court or field, she busts her tail, even when she has had to work through wearing a knee brace while recovering from injury.

Away from the arena, she is witty and warm, highly intelligent and gracious to those around her.

And topping it all off is Smith’s willingness, nay, her burning desire, to be a true queen of having her photo taken.

For a blog that sees its numbers spike thanks to photos, especially those behind-the-scenes shots which allow the Wolves to show off their personalities, Ema is invaluable.

As she celebrates her cake day today, I just want to say thank you.

Thank you, Ema, for being kind and caring, for loving the spotlight but loving your teammates and friends more, for playing with passion and heart, for staying true to the way your parents, Charlie and Tammy, have raised you and your sister, Ciara.

You are a truly special young woman and our town and our school hit the jackpot when you and your family moved here.

I hope your 16th birthday is a special one, but more importantly, I hope you realize how appreciated you are by all those around you.

Stay amazing, Ema.

We went full-bore.

Saturday night brought the biggest athletic fundraiser our town has each year — the famous Crab Feed and auction extravaganza — and we had not one, but two paparazzi on the scene.

Capturing images of the Coupeville Booster Club’s shindig were John Fisken and Ema Smith, and the photos above are courtesy them.

The captions? That’s all me, and thank you for asking, I do amuse myself.
