“Fear my cannon, fools!!” (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

They’re wearing purple and gold today but could be clad in black and red when it counts.

That’s the real reason I run photos from Oak Harbor Football and Cheer League games, because you never know which players will grow up to play high school ball in Coupeville.

Since there is no youth league in Cow Town, often future Wolves first suit up and hit the turf in Oak Town.

Case in point, current CHS senior Logan Downes, who is graduating after setting school single-game, single-season, and career touchdown passing marks.

Once upon a time as a young gunslinger he wore purple and gold, then graduated to better colors once he matured.

The current mix of players, who played Saturday at Wildcat Memorial Stadium in a pair of playoff games, are all free agents at this point.

And whether they hail from Coupeville or Oak Harbor, there’s still time for them (and their parents) to make the right choice for their high school days.

Make ’em Bow Down to Cow Town while being tutored by Wolf gridiron guru Bennett Richter and get featured on a regular basis here on Coupeville Sports.

Cause Oak Harbor doesn’t have a sports blog of its own.

Just sayin’, nudge, nudge.

Well, anyway, while you’re weighing your child’s best shot at sports immortality, pop over and see everything John Fisken shot at those Saturday games:

On to basketball season.

The Coupeville High School football team has decided not to pursue a week #10 game against another school on the outside of the playoffs.

A big factor?

There weren’t many willing opponents on the open market.

“Many of the programs we were trying to play had decided to end their season,” said CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

With the decision not to play on, the Wolves finish 2-7 this season, a year after going 7-2, winning a Northwest 2B/1B League title and advancing to state.

This year’s win/loss mark is a bit deceptive, as Coupeville, a 2B school, played four times against 1A or 2A schools, and twice lost this season on the very last offensive play of the game.

Those defeats came in the opener against Klahowya, and in the finale against Friday Harbor, with the latter preventing CHS from forcing a tiebreaker with the Wolverines to determine which NWL team went to state.

Wolf foes have combined to go 32-28, with five of seven posting winning records.

Coupeville senior quarterback Logan Downes smashed the school records for touchdown passes in a season (20) and career (40), while tying his own single-game standard (5) in a late-season win over La Conner.

Eight of 11 Wolves who scored this season can return next year, led by the trio of Chase Anderson (seven touchdowns), Aiden O’Neill (6), and Jack Porter (4).

Football, from a different angle.

Coupeville High School senior Sophia Broderick makes her debut here on the blog, with a series of glossy snaps captured at Thursday’s Senior Night game.

A mix of gridiron action, cheer pics, and off-field happenings, they make for an auspicious debut.

Chase won the chase. Maybe.

As we hit Monday, there is still a chance the Coupeville High School football team will pick up a tenth game, adding a matchup with another school also sitting on the outside of the playoffs.

So, until final word comes from Wolf coach Bennett Richter, we can’t say for sure the season is 100% done.

With that in the back of our minds, a look at season-to-date scoring stats for CHS shows sophomore Chase Anderson leading the way.

He sits alone atop four scoring categories, while being tied for the fifth.

Issabel Johnson and her spiker crew are chasing a trip to state. (Nick Guay photo)

The standings are frozen.

Regular season play for all fall sports teams finished this past week, and everyone still alive is off to the playoffs.

That means, first and foremost, that this is our final standings story until basketball gets underway.

But it doesn’t mean there isn’t action coming your way this coming week.

Coupeville High School volleyball plays Monday (in Lacey) and Wednesday (in La Conner) in the District 1/2 tourney, trying to punch its ticket to state for the first time since 2017.

Wolf cross country has already earned an invite to the big dance, with the entire boys’ team and sophomore Noelle Western slated to compete Saturday in Pasco in the 1B/2B state championships.

And finally, we may have more football. Emphasis on may.

Coupeville missed out on a trip to the playoffs but could pick up a week #10 game against another school without a postseason date.

Watch this blog (with bated breath) to see what develops in the next few days.
