Memorial set for beloved teacher

A celebration of life service has been set for Edmundo Corrales, who was killed in a car accident Monday near Deception Pass.

The 2007 graduate of Oak Harbor High School lived on Whidbey with his wife and young daughter, while teaching Spanish and coaching multiple sports in the Anacortes School District.

Corrales, who worked at Oak Harbor’s Blue Fox Drive-In Theater before becoming a teacher, played on the 2006 Wildcat football team which won the program’s only state title.

Two of his teammates on that squad, Bobby Carr and Bennett Richter, currently coach football at Coupeville High School.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science at Whitworth University, Corrales was hired as an assistant football coach at Sedro-Woolley High School, where he worked for his former OHHS coach, Dave Ward.

Corrales had worked for the Anacortes School District since 2018, where he coached golf, wrestling, and trap and skeet shooting.

Help support wife, daughter of beloved teacher

Several communities are rallying to help the wife and young daughter of a well-loved local teacher killed in a head-on car collision Monday by Deception Pass.

Edmundo Corrales, a 2007 graduate of Oak Harbor High School who lived on Whidbey, taught Spanish and coached multiple sports in the Anacortes School District.

His connections to The Rock were many, as he played on the OHHS state championship football team in 2006 alongside current Coupeville gridiron coaches Bobby Carr and Bennett Richter.

Corrales also worked at Oak Harbor’s Blue Fox Drive-In Theater before becoming a teacher.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science at Whitworth University, the former Wildcat was hired as an assistant football coach at Sedro-Woolley High School, where he worked for his former OHHS coach, Dave Ward.

Corrales has worked for the Anacortes School District since 2018, where he coached golf, wrestling, and trap and skeet shooting.

Friends of the family have launched a GoFundMe to aid his wife, Meghan, and their seven-month-old daughter, Daphne.

Northwest League football coaches honor six Wolves

He fought until the final play, the final yard, every time, and was rewarded for it.

Coupeville High School senior Chase Anderson was named an All-Conference First-Team selection at three positions, honored by Northwest 2B/1B League football coaches as a quarterback, kicker, and linebacker.

He was also nominated for the All-State game, with final rosters for that contest to be named at a later date.

Joining Anderson as a First-Team All-League player were seniors Camden Glover (Defensive Line) and Malachi Somes (Defensive Back) and juniors Davin Houston (Defensive Back) and Riley Lawless (Offensive Line and Defensive Line).

Houston also received Honorable Mention for his work at receiver, as did sophomore running back Liam Blas.

Gridiron giants honor high achievers

That’s a wrap.

The Coupeville High School fall sports banquet season reached the finish line Tuesday, as Wolf football became the sixth, and final, team to honor its athletes.

Head coach Bennett Richter tabbed Chase Anderson as his Offensive MVP, while Davin Houston was named Defensive MVP.

Other awards went to Aiden O’Neill (Most Inspirational), Riley Lawless (I.H.O.P. Lineman of the Year), and Liam Blas (Way of the Wolf), while the duo of Aaron DiDonna and Aiden Tingley were honored as Scout Team Players of the Year.

Seniors Marquette Cunningham, Jayme Carranza, Malachi Somes, Camden Glover, Anderson, and O’Neill all received Four Year Awards as well.

Aiden O’Neill received the Most Inspirational Award.

Prairie progeny earn football honors

Former Coupeville High School cheerleader Sarah (Engle) Viers now roots for son Lyal.

The prairie is strong in them.

Cedar Park Christian senior football captains Lyal Viers and Andy Penrod, part of the seventh generation of their family to have a connection to Coupeville, were honored recently for their play on the gridiron.

Viers was named as both the Offensive and Defensive MVP for the Emerald Sound Conference — a league which includes traditional powerhouse King’s — while Penrod was tabbed as a First-Team All-Conference wide receiver.

Cedar Park, which beat both Coupeville and South Whidbey in non-conference games this season, finished 4-6.

Viers and Penrod are the sons of sisters (and CHS grads) Sarah and Stephanie Engle, respectively, and Andy’s dad is Videoville alumni Isaiah Penrod.

Grandparents include the “Dave’s” — former Coupeville Town Marshal Dave Penrod and the late, great Pastor Dave Engle, AKA the nicest human being I’ve ever met.

Andy Penrod snagged 23 passes for 475 yards and nine touchdowns, while Lyal Viers filled up the stat sheet on both sides of the ball.

He racked up 1,385 all-purpose yards, rushing 95 times for 598 yards and seven scores, while adding 32 receptions for 600 yards and four more trips to the end zone.

On defense, Viers had 37 solo tackles, 54 assists, three interceptions, and a fumble recovery to pace CPC.
