Gridiron playoff dream denied

A strong season ended on a bit of a sour note.

Thanks to a 35-0 loss to Friday Harbor in a tiebreaker half-game played Monday on a neutral field in La Conner, the Coupeville High School football team is headed to the showers.

The Wolves finish 5-4 on the season, while the Wolverines, who are 3-5, advance to play Pe Ell-Willapa Valley (5-4) in a loser-out, winner-to-state game.

Monday’s rumble on a rain-slicked field didn’t change anyone’s win/loss record, but it did determine bragging rights and settle the chase for District 1’s lone postseason berth for 2B teams.

The clash consisted of two 12-minute halves and was necessary since Coupeville and Friday Harbor, the only Northwest 2B/1B League teams playing 11-man football, split their season series.

CHS won the first meeting 18-5 in Cow Town, while Friday Harbor bounced back to take the regular season finale 17-13 on its home turf on Halloween night.

While those two contests were close, Monday’s rubber match was not.

Friday Harbor came out with a simple plan – run, run, and run some more. And it worked.

The Wolverines chewed up five-plus minutes on the opening possession of the game before punching in a touchdown on a short run.

Then, after Coupeville went three-and-out, Friday Harbor went right back to operating a battering ram-style offense, scoring again with a hair over two minutes left in the “first half.”

The Wolf defense played with intensity all season.

Trailing 14-0 at the break, the Wolf offense never really got untracked on the slick La Conner field, and the score got lopsided in the second half.

CHS quarterback Chase Anderson scrambled every which way but loose, and also pegged a couple of successful passes, but Coupeville was ultimately shut out for the first time this season.

While things didn’t end the way they wanted, the Wolves still put together a strong campaign.

Wins over Annie Wright, Klahowya, Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, Friday Harbor, and Winlock give Coupeville its second winning season under third-year coach Bennett Richter.

Monday marked the end of the road for Wolf seniors Marcelo Gebhard, Zander Pulliam, Jack Porter, Hunter Bronec, Johnny Porter, and manager Matthew Campbell.

Coupeville can return five of the eight players who scored this season, however, led by Anderson and Davin Houston, who combined for 17 touchdowns.

Chase Anderson racked up 99 points as Coupeville’s quarterback/kicker.

Halloween loss haunts gridiron giants

It’s not over just yet.

The battle between Coupeville and Friday Harbor to decide the Northwest 2B/1B League football crown, and claim a playoff berth, will go to overtime.

Or a tiebreaker, more to the point.

That’s thanks to Friday Harbor rallying from a touchdown down Thursday to claim a 17-13 Halloween win on its home turf.

The loss drops Coupeville to 1-1 in league play, 5-4 overall, while the Wolverines get to 1-1, 3-5.

CHS had the edge going in Thursday, having won 18-5 when the teams squared off in Cow Town four weeks ago.

With another victory, the Wolves would have collected a season sweep, claimed the NWL crown, and punched their playoff ticket to face a team from District 4 with a state tourney berth at stake.

Instead, Coupeville and Friday Harbor will both travel this coming Monday, Nov. 4 to a neutral field at La Conner for a tiebreaker to decide things.

A 5:30 PM kickoff has been confirmed by CHS Athletic Director Brad Sherman.

The plan is to play two 12-minute “halves,” so essentially a half game. Winner claims District 1’s playoff spot, and loser does not.

Thursday’s regular season finale, which was moved up by a day because of the possibility of a tiebreaker needing to be played, broke in favor of Coupeville early.

Junior quarterback Chase Anderson scampered in for his team-leading twelfth touchdown in the first quarter, then mashed the PAT kick to put the Wolves up 7-0.

That lead held up until midway through the second quarter, when Friday Harbor rammed home a score to knot things up.

Tied at 7-7 at the half, the two squads played a scoreless third quarter, before suddenly getting offensive in the fourth.

Friday Harbor claimed the lead at 10-7 on a Victor Valasquez field goal, before pushing the lead out to 17-7 with just under three minutes to play.

Anderson gave Coupeville a fighting chance, lofting a TD pass to Jack Porter, who broke into the end zone for the eighth time during his senior campaign.

The Wolves failed to convert the PAT however, and time ran out on them, denying them a chance to claim the league title outright.

Instead, they will regroup and get ready to rumble one more time with everything on the line.

Coupeville’s seniors will pull on their helmets again Monday night.

Loss stings, booters remain in playoff chase

A bump in the road.

Playing on Friday Harbor Tuesday, the Coupeville High School co-ed soccer squad took a brief step backwards, held scoreless for only the second time in 11 games this season.

Blanked 3-0 by their hosts, the Wolves had their three-game winning streak cracked and fall to 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-5-1 overall.

Coupeville is in a tie with Lopez Island (3-1) for second place in the nine-team NWL boys’ soccer standings, trailing just Orcas Island (5-0) with four games left on the regular season schedule.

Next up is a big one, with the Wolves squaring off with Lopez at Mickey Clark Field Thursday in a game scheduled to kick off at 4:00 PM.

After that, CHS closes with a home clash against Providence Classical Christian (Oct. 29), a road trip to La Conner (Nov. 1) and a home rumble with Orcas (Nov. 2).

Tuesday was the second time the Wolves played Friday Harbor this season, but an 8-3 loss back on Sept. 17 was in a game considered a non-conference clash between league foes.

This one hurt more, as it affects playoff positioning and came in a must-win game for the always-tough Wolverines, who came into the day unexpectedly struggling at 0-3 in NWL play.

CHS coach Robert Wood praised senior goaltender Hurlee Bronec, saying the netminder “played like a professional and saved it from being 7-0.”

Spear surges, Wolf harriers dominate

It’s been a pretty good week for George Spear.

The Coupeville High School junior was selected as Homecoming royalty last Friday, then he went out and lapped everyone Wednesday.

Competing at a three-team cross country meet on Friday Harbor, Spear ran away with an individual title, finishing 24 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

Who happened to be his teammate, sophomore Kenneth Jacobsen, as the Wolves claimed the top six slots in the boy’s race.

Needless to say, that propelled Coupeville to a team title as well, as it finished with 15 points to Friday Harbor’s 46 and Orcas Island’s 73.

Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting was thrilled to see Spear surge to the front of the pack on the 5,000-meter coure.

“It was so well deserving!” she said. “He fought so hard for it! Once they took off, he was focused!”

On the girl’s side of things, the Wolves were led by third-place finisher Aleera Kent and nabbed six of the top 10 finishes.

Friday Harbor, with individual winner Isabel Bashaw, compiled just enough premium times to nip Coupeville for the team title, however, edging out the Wolves 26-31.

CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting got to drive in style on Friday Harbor. No word on whether she was able to smuggle her ride back on to the ferry.

The race was unique in that it featured the three island schools from the Northwest 2B/1B League.

Add in an elegant course, and Bitting came away impressed.

“It was such a beautiful day,” she said. “Only schools from the islands attended and they all ran amazing!

“What a difference to run a race, work hard at it, but have the cushion of an all-grass course to run on.

“Just what the legs needed! We look forward to returning next season.”

Before then, the Wolves will hit the trail again this weekend, joining their middle school counterparts in trekking to Granite Falls Saturday for the 4th annual Mountain Loop Invitational.

Another night, another win

Sometimes perfection comes with a few bumps in the road.

Tuesday night’s varsity high school volleyball rumble between high-flying Coupeville and cellar dweller Friday Harbor was the blowout one would have expected.

Except for a 10-minute patch where everything went sideways.

But, a 10-minute patch does not a season ruin, as the senior-led Wolves pulled themselves together on their home floor and closed as strongly as they started, capturing a 25-3, 25-18, 25-4 victory.

The win lifts Coupeville to 6-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-0 overall, tying these Wolves for the second-best start in program history.

The 2024 edition of the CHS spikers equals the 2019 squad, whose setter was current assistant coach Scout Smith. That team started 7-0 en route to going 14-5.

The best start for a Coupeville spiker crew? Toni Crebbin’s 2004 team, which started 10-0 and finished 14-3.

The current Wolves, who earned coach Cory Whitmore his 95th victory Tuesday, have won all 21 sets they’ve played in the regular season this year.

They’ll take their streaks East this weekend, when they travel to Liberty High School in Spangle.

Friday night the Wolves clash with always-tough Okanogan (5-5), before returning to the same gym Saturday for a tournament which will feature prominent spiker programs such as defending 2B state champs Manson.

Tuesday’s warmup, coming against the last-place team in the NWL, was a potential trap.

Though, at first, the Wolves were ready.

Katie Marti opened at the service stripe and looked like she would never leave, ripping off 20 straight points to send a jolt of electricity through a somewhat-sparse crowd limited by an early 4:00 PM start.

The Wolves dominated at the net, as well, with Mia Farris, Teagan Calkins, and Jada Heaton combining to quickly thwart any efforts by Friday Harbor to stage brief rallies.

There was a moment where it looked like I was about to see the first 25-0 set of my sports reporting career.

But it was not to be, as someone on the CHS bench (who shall remain anonymous — you’re welcome, Miss You Know Who) jinxed the whole thing by mentioning out loud the Wolves had no errors up to that point.

After which the volleyball gods let one point slip through the Wolf defense, in retribution for breaking volleyball code.

While the perfect set faded into the gym air, the Wolves still came pretty dang close, with Aby Wood and Tenley Stuurmans notching service points to end things quickly.

And then the hiccup came.

After a first set in which Friday Harbor had nothing going on, the visitors shocked everyone in attendance by roaring out to a 13-6 lead in the second set.

Whitmore allowed his veteran spikers to find their own way on this one, and his belief in the long timers was repaid.

Marti, patrolling the floor from her setter position, kept delivering precision set-ups, and her big mashers responded.

Heaton, crunching the ball and flexin’ on fools, delivered her biggest performance of the season, while Lyla Stuurmans started flat-out murdering the ball.

Meanwhile Madison McMillan and Taylor Brotemarkle kept everything in play, Farris and Calkins sniped from the sides, and slowly, steadily, the Wolves dug themselves out of an unexpected hole.

Friday Harbor went down fighting with a fury, but the lead finally slipped away when Lyla Stuurmans spanked a service ace off the back corner to make it 18-17.

Marti got artful, faking a set before flipping a winner through a maze of bodies, and enjoyed it so much, she promptly did it a second time.

Closing the second set on a 19-5 tear, the Wolves never stumbled again, tearing through the final frame with the same precision they displayed at the start of the match.

With Calkins and McMillan torching their foes from the service stripe, CHS jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the third frame, then pushed it all the way out to 20-1 before coasting in for the win.

Coupeville’s seniors continue to lead the way.

As he reflected on Tuesday’s rout, and looked ahead to the Eastern Washington expedition, Whitmore praised his veterans for finding their way back after their brief melt-down.

“Katie played as controlled as I have ever seen her,” he said. “She gave the ball to her hitters really well and set them up for success.

“Jada was really strong tonight, and Mia was at the top of her game. She looked fearless.”
