Throw a strike, help a pooch. (Photo property WAIF)

Do it for Mittens.

And Sparky, and Lil’ Lulu, and the Colonel.

Take part in a bowling fundraiser for the Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation this weekend, and your lane activity will benefit the pooches and kitties of the Island.

WAIF is hosting an event at Oak Bowl & Mario’s Pizza (531 SE Midway Blvd) Sunday, July 31 with proceeds going to benefit its work.

The fundraiser runs from 1:00-3:30 PM, costs $20 per person and covers two hours of bowling plus shoe rental.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle (cash only!) with $10 tickets. Hit the jackpot and you take home half the ticket sales.

Money raised from the fundraiser will help WAIF with general operations and its animal welfare program.

That includes things such as spay/neuter coupons for low-income households, as well as food, toys and medication for the animals.

Register in advance for the fundraiser at waifanimals.org/lets-bowl and you’ll be eligible to nab one of two $50 gift cards from Popsies, a popcorn/ice cream/candy store in Oak Harbor.

Coupeville High School students prep food for sale to hungry Ragnar Relay runners. (Photos courtesy Dina Guay)

Many hands make light the work.

The runners are coming, and so are the fundraising opportunities.

The annual Ragnar Relay, which sends teams from Blaine to Langley over the course of two days and a night, kicks off today.

As the runners descend like locusts on Whidbey, the Coupeville High School Class of 2023 is taking advantage.

Students, parents, and other volunteers will be selling breakfast to participants, with profits going to post-graduation festivities.

The Class of 2023 is also helping flag traffic in Langley from 1:30-8:30 PM Saturday and is still in need of more volunteers.

Completing that task will garner an $850 donation for the CHS students.

Let ’em spike the dirt from your vehicle.

Coupeville volleyball players will be armed with brushes and hoses this coming weekend, holding a car wash fundraiser.

The event goes down at Ebey Academy starting at 10 AM — just down the street from the annual Lion’s Club garage sale — and helps the spikers pay for volleyball camps and related activities.

Pro tip — keep an eye out this week, as several of the players have been spotted out in front of Prairie Center Market, pre-selling tickets.

Brandon Graham

Family and friends of Brandon Graham, a 2007 Coupeville High School grad who died last summer, are starting a foundation to assist others.

The goal is to “honor Brandon by bringing awareness of suicide to the community, so no other family must go through the pain Brandon’s family has gone through.”

The foundation, which is being started by Coupeville grads Debbie Vescovi and Michelle Armstrong, will offer support for Coupeville and Oak Harbor schools, with a focus on mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and anti-bullying efforts.

Money raised will be used to provide resources for students and training for teachers and parents, with an emphasis on bringing together local law enforcement, chaplains, and motivational speakers to assist.

Foundation organizers are launching things with a fundraiser Aug. 6.

A luau dinner and silent auction is set for the Nordic Lodge in Coupeville (63 Jacobs Rd.), with things starting at 4 PM.

Tickets are limited and can be obtained either in person at Polished Studio in Oak Harbor (861 SE Pioneer Way) or by emailing thebrandongrahamfoundation@gmail.com.

Cost is $30 for single admission, or $50 for a couple.

The plan is to make the dinner a yearly fundraiser.

The foundation is also in the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and will launch a website where people can donate to the ongoing work.

“Mental health wellness needs to be a number one priority for our children,” foundation organizers said in a statement.

“We, as a community, can provide our youth with tools to be able to work through the problems they have, and know that the community has their back.”
