The prairie was abuzz with the sound of runners slicing through early morning fog, and cash hitting the bank account.

Saturday brought another edition of Race the Reserve — the biggest fundraiser for Coupeville’s senior class — to life, with the pics above and below showcasing a taste of what went down.

The pics come to us from a wide array of Wolf Moms, always doing my work for me and being greatly appreciated for it.

Race the Reserve needs your support

This is your time to join the movement.

Parents of students in the Coupeville High School Class of 2025 are ramping up for next month’s Race the Reserve and are looking for sponsors and people willing to donate for goodie bags.

The event, set for August 10, is the biggest fundraiser for each year’s graduating class.

Organizers are planning 300 goodie bags and are looking for a wide variety of things.

“Goodie bag items can be coupons, advertisements, lip balm, sunscreen, granola bars, anything really,” said Wolf Mom Christi Messner.

Donations need to be made by Aug. 5.

You can also sponsor the race, and the deadline for that is much closer, arriving this coming Wednesday, July 24.

Help Prairie Perks keep perkin’

One of Coupeville’s best and brightest young business owners is in need of support from her community.

Angie Ireland, who owns and operates Prairie Perks in the parking lot next to the former bowling alley in Coupeville, suffered a broken leg and had to have surgery.

This has knocked her out of commission and made it hard to keep her business operating.

She’s missed three weeks of work, and doctors recommend another 3-6 weeks of down time.

Having hurt her other foot because of returning to work too soon before, and intestinal surgery in October, it has created great strain on Ireland.

“These last few weeks have been extremely difficult on my mental health, especially,” Ireland wrote on a GoFundMe she has recently launched.

“I hate having to ask for help, but I’ve learned that sometimes I just have to.

“Luckily my recovery is going well, bones are healing, pain is low, but I am absolutely struggling.”

Ireland, who began as an employee at Prairie Perks before becoming the owner, is held in high esteem by her regular customers.

“She is one of the kindest business owners,” said Michelle Cernick, who owns Whidbey Pest Control with husband Reese.

“Angie has worked really hard to keep some of the best staff around. Everyone that works there is very nice.”

While the Cernicks are big fans of the coffee, smoothies, and frozen lemonade Ireland serves up, it’s her personal touch which resonates the most.

“Angie always smiles and asks how my family is doing,” Michelle Cernick said. “Of course she loves our dog, Zoey. They have spoiled her rotten.”

On her GoFundMe, Ireland is very appreciative of all who have reached out to help keep her and Prairie Perks going.

“Thank you to the friends and customers who have dropped cards or gifts off at the coffee stand,” she said. “I appreciate you thinking of me and trying to keep me entertained while I’m stuck sitting.

“This money would help me pay my bills for the next month, keep food on the table, and give me a chance to rest without as much stress. If you’re able to donate, I appreciate it so much, I know times are tough on everyone.

“And if you want to think some positive thoughts and send them my way, I could sure use that too. I’m just ready to be back with my community, slinging some joe.”

Pancake power fuels fundraiser

I shouldn’t even have to give you an extra reason to want to eat delicious pancakes.

But I will.

Amanda Rogers, one of the best of all Wolf Moms, is leading a fundraiser for a close friend and former co-worker at Oak Harbor’s Applebee’s who is battling Stage 5 kidney disease.

Lashan Nixon is “an amazing human that became a part of our team a few years ago,” Rogers said.

“She was a wonderful member of our community before she relocated to Lacey and transferred to the Applebee’s there.

“Lashan is always the first to stand up and volunteer her time to help someone in need. She is a friend to everyone she meets.”

The kidney disease diagnosis has changed Nixon’s life dramatically, and her former co-workers here on The Rock want to do what they can to help her as she waits for a transplant.

The Oak Harbor Applebee’s is hosting a Flapjack Fundraiser Saturday, June 29 from 9-11 AM.

Tickets can be purchased at the restaurant, which is located at 31810 State Route 20.

“Your donation will go towards helping Lashan and in return you get to enjoy a pancake breakfast and a little community camaraderie,” Rogers said.

“If pancakes aren’t your thing or you already have plans that day then please consider purchasing a breakfast for someone in need who lives in our community.”

Organizers hope to get 60 plates donated to Spin Cafe.

“Thank you all for teaching me about community and how powerful we can be when we come together,” Rogers said. “Thank you, Whidbey!”

Kids tennis camp set for new CHS courts

Help test out the new tennis courts.

With brand-new playing surfaces just about finished next to the Coupeville High School gym, CHS coaches are planning to hold a tennis camp July 8-12.

The event is a fundraiser for Wolf tennis, while also offering young players in grades 3-8 a chance to get an introduction to the game, or finetune their skills.

Deadline to sign up is June 14.

“So excited to share our knowledge of tennis with the community!” said CHS net coach Starla Seal.

“Looking forward to introducing tennis to our youth and getting them involved at an early age in such a great sport.

“The more opportunities the youth can have the better, especially at this age when they are trying different sports out and getting a feel for which one best suits them!”
