Booster Club needs your mussel muscles

Stir the mussels, help fill the (financial) pot.

The Coupeville Booster Club is looking for a few good volunteers to help out with one of its biggest fundraisers.

That would be the annual Mussel Fest, which is set for Mar. 2-3 this go round.

The booster club serves up warm food to festival goers, with the resulting money helping them fulfill their goal of being the wind beneath the wings of Coupeville athletes.

While you get bonus points if you have a food handlers’ card, no prior experience is needed, as the club will teach you to duel with the briny buggers on the fly.

“We just need new blood,” said booster club mover and shaker Leann Leavitt with a laugh.

“I’m not sure how many more years I can convince (my husband) Nate to cook these for an entire weekend.”

Wolf Nation, help the Falcon faithful

There are Wolves, Falcons, and Wildcats, but ultimately, it’s one Whidbey for those involved in sports.

The unexpected death of Garth Batchelor Tuesday leaves a huge hole for the South Whidbey community, and I’m asking Wolf Nation, if possible, to join in helping them.

Batchelor, who along with his wife Olivia, grew up on the south end of the island, was an avid little league coach and athletic supporter.

All three of the couple’s children — Brent, Morgan, and Levi — are strong multi-sport athletes who provided great competition for Coupeville.

Even as I gently harassed Olivia during her own coaching days, imploring her to transfer her children to the middle part of Whidbey, they remained steadfast Falcons — something I respect.

This will be a very tough time for the family, beginning with the fact Garth was the primary source of income for the Batchelor’s.

If you have the ability to financially help, please consider doing so. If not, pass on info to others.

Together, we can help keep alive the idea of “One Whidbey,” a band of small-town folk standing together regardless of what school colors we wear.

“Ezra faces his challenges with remarkable courage”

Attacking each day with a winning attitude.

The kid is a righteous lil’ dude.

Samantha Wanek, who I used to work with, and Devin Prescott, who attended Coupeville schools like his siblings, are in need of our support.

I would ask Wolf Nation to consider helping out.

Samantha’s nine-year-old son, Ezra, who I met a couple of times when he was younger, is about to undergo open heart surgery.

He was a bright, outgoing kid, who reflected a lot of his mom’s best qualities, and recent photos show his winning personality shining through.

Open heart surgery is a tough journey for anyone, much less a young guy who is still in single digits.

As they go through the surgery, and the recovery period, Samantha, Devin, Ezra, and his siblings will need help with financial matters.

Free throws fuel future Wolf success

They shoot, you pay, everyone scores.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team is conducting a fundraiser this season based on how many free throws the squad hits in varsity games.

You pledge a certain amount for each successful charity shot, then pay up at the end of the season, once all the numbers are totaled up.

All money raised goes to the Wolf program to help with equipment and supplies.

Fans can reach out to Coupeville coaches or players to get a donation sheet.

Or, if you want to get a jump start on helping out, you can also skip ahead and make a flat donation now by contacting CHS head coach Megan Richter at msmith@coupeville.k12.wa.us.

Snag booster club dinner tickets now (or else)

Two days to go, with 16 tickets left on the open market.

After that you’ll have to hang out behind the gym and deal with the ticket scalpers.

The return of the Coupeville High School Booster Club’s annual dinner and auction is set for this Saturday, Nov. 11, with doors opening at 4:30 PM.

The event happens at the Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge (63 Jacobs Road) and will be catered by Serendipity Catering and Events.

Dinner begins at 6:00, with a dessert auction set for 6:30, and a live auction hosted by Dale Sherman kicking off at 7:00.

A silent auction and raffles run throughout the evening.

Tickets are $55, or $400 for a table of eight, and can be obtained from Booster Club board members, who can be found at the end of this article.

Auction items continue to pour in, with some recent additions including “beachside drinks and pu pu platter,” hosted by Gordon McMillan and Nancy Conard, a painting party (with wine) for up to 10, and a dinner for six (with wine pairings) cooked in your home by a professional chef.

Those items join already announced ones such as a one-week stay at a Maui condo, a sunset cruise, and a four-day, three-night stay at a townhome in Park City, Utah — home of the Sundance Film Festival.

Wolf cross country cares about your tender tootsies.

There will also be a variety of themed baskets available in the silent auction, including Italian dinner and wine and cheese assortments, as well as Sherman beef, running and Patagonia gear, and local artwork.

All proceeds help the Coupeville Booster Club, which provides major funding for school athletics.

The organization annually awards eight $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors, while also providing a yearly stipend to high school and middle school sports programs.

The club provides roses for Senior Night festivities, varsity letters for Wolf athletes, meal money and goodie bags for road trips, and numerous team improvement items.

These have ranged from literature and DVDs to tarps, weight room equipment, batting cages, upgrades to school athletic fields and facilities, and t-shirts for cancer awareness nights.

The Wall of Fame in the CHS gym, which documents accomplishments from 100+ years of Coupeville athletics?

It wouldn’t exist without the support of the boosters, who provided the biggest financial contribution to its development, and continue to handle updates.
