Wolf booters pepper rival goalies

With four scores in 2019, sophomore Sage Downes has run his career total to seven goals.

Since the Coupeville High School soccer programs only began in 2004, I assumed it would be fairly easy to track down complete scoring records.

To which the universe flicked me behind the ear while whispering, “Oh, you naive fool.”

Having obtained access to the Whidbey News-Times archives, it took me maybe 12 minutes, tops, before finding I was on a mission which was not going to end well.

Having put in 2+ years as a sports editor at that newspaper back in the day, I understand the tricky balancing act it takes to cover both Oak Harbor and Coupeville.

But, when it came to covering soccer, there were a couple of my successors, who, it would seem, didn’t even try.

Huge chunks of games were missing, no one ran stat totals for soccer, ever, and, barring a miracle, we’ll never really know how many goals Geoff Wacker, Mike Duke and other early CHS pitch stars tallied.

I can tell you, with 99.9992% precision, who scored goals the past seven seasons (2013-2019), which have played out during the life of Coupeville Sports.

Before that, I can give you season team totals, though not individual stats, for 2010-2012, thanks to the archives of the North Sound Conference site.

Having held on to game scores from Coupeville’s four-year stint in the Olympic League and its final five seasons in the Cascade Conference, at least the NSC site is trying.

All of this is preamble to taking a look at how the current Wolves compare to their predecessors.

With four regular-season games left on the schedule, and then at least one (and hopefully many more) playoff games, the 2019 squad is rising up the charts.

The current Wolves sit tied for 6th, and while it’s unlikely they’ll catch last year’s record-busting team, it wouldn’t take much for them to at least finish in the top five over the last decade.

Burn the net!!

There’s usually two ways to look at things.

There is no doubt scoring is down for the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad this season.

After stringing together three consecutive years of 30+ goals as a team, topping out with a 47-goal explosion in 2016, the current Wolves seem unlikely to reach those heights.

The 2018 squad has tallied 15 scores through its first 11 games.

With just four regular-season games left on the schedule, plus (hopefully) a postseason appearance, the Wolves would have to radically ramp up their scoring to keep the streak alive.

But, the first of those four games comes Tuesday at Sultan, against a Turks team Coupeville ravaged for six goals the first time around.

And, tack on just four more scores before the season is over and done, and the current team will still have the fourth-best showing of any Wolf squad from the last decade.

“It’s going to be such a great season!!”

Flip the calendar and refocus your mind.

August has arrived, which means, in less than three weeks, practice officially begins for fall high school sports.

No, it’s true. I swear.

Aug. 15 is the first day high school football teams can take the field in Washington state, while Aug. 20 is the kickoff date for volleyball, cross country, cheer, boys tennis and girls soccer.

With a new season, and a new school year, also comes a new league.

After a four-year run in the Olympic League, Coupeville joins Granite Falls, Sultan, Cedar Park Christian (Bothell), King’s and arch-rival South Whidbey in the North Sound Conference.

As they count down the days until the first practice, several Wolves (and one enterprising Falcon) drop by to let you know their thoughts and feelings, their goals and plans.

 

Ja’Tarya Hoskins (CHS junior):

My new goals for the cheer season are to learn and perform a lot of new stunts. Help spread cheer and Coupeville Wolves spirit.

 

Lily Leedy (CHS freshman):

To work better as a team. Learn plays and to show the opponent who’s boss.

 

Kody Newman (SWHS senior):

Very excited for this year’s conference! But most importantly…. THE BUCKET GAME!!!

Not only is it the biggest game of the Island, but it is also our Homecoming game! Ticket sales are sure to be raised for this game!!! Falcons are coming for revenge!

Best of luck this year to the Wolves and hopefully King’s does terrible, lol!

 

Lucy Sandahl (CHS junior):

My goal for the new season is to play every game with a new mind-set and put all the bad plays behind me and focus on the next point.

Another thing that I am looking forward to is getting to see how well our team adapts to all the new plays and players after having lost seven really strong seniors.

This new league has so much hype, but so do we; we’ve won two back-to-back league champs.

What makes them think we can’t do it again? We are strong, faster, and mentally unstoppable.

The only way we are going to get through this is together and it is going to be such a great season!!! I am so excited!

 

Emma Smith (CHS senior):

We want a winning season!!

Playing as a unit instead of six individuals is something we’ve been working on since last year, and is extremely crucial for us to do considering we pretty much have a new starting six.

We also want to go into the season confident in our skills and without the fear of “big, bad King’s.”

They make it rain goals!!

They’re scoring at a record-setting pace.

With 39 goals through 10 games, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad is on target to put up its best offensive numbers in at least a decade.

Having peppered goalies for five more scores since last time we discussed the subject, the current Wolves have tied the 2010 team, and are just nine back of the high-powered ’16 squad.

The numbers for the nine CHS seasons the Olympic League web site has recorded:

2010 – 39 goals
2011 – 30
2012 – 27
2013 – 15
2014 – 22
2015 – 37
2016 – 48
2017 – 26
2018 – 39 and counting

Coupeville (3-1 in Olympic League play, 4-4-2 overall) has five conference games left, and then likely heads to the playoffs.

If the Wolves maintain their current scoring pace, they would obliterate the mark set by the ’16 team.

But, of course, you have to play the games first, and the schedule ahead is a bit tricky.

Two of those regular-season matches are against Klahowya, which has surrendered just six goals this season, none against 1A Olympic League foes.

But, one of those tilts comes against Chimacum, a team that has been shredded for 62 goals in six games.

So, it may balance itself out.

We shoot? We score!!

The offense has a little extra octane in it this year.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad passed the halfway point of the regular season Monday, and sits at 4-3-1 overall, 3-1 in Olympic League play.

After upcoming back-to-back non-conference tilts with Forks and Port Angeles, the Wolves close with five straight conference games, then hope to be playoff-bound.

If the goal-scoring stays at current levels, a postseason berth should be fairly easy to get.

With nine different players tallying at least one score, CHS has already rattled the net for 34 goals.

That figure tops last year’s season-ending totals and is already the fourth-best team mark in the last nine years.

Why am I using nine seasons for this comparison, you ask? Easy answer — that’s what the Olympic League site has archived.

So, looking at the Wolf boys from 2010 to this moment in time, here’s how things have played out.

When it comes to individual scoring, sophomore Derek Leyva, who transferred to Coupeville this year, is out in front and chasing the Wolf single-season records.

On the boys side, that mark belong to Derek’s cousin, Abraham Leyva, who punched in 20 in one campaign, while Mia Littlejohn owns the school record with 27.
