Tamsin Ward is not messing around.

The Coupeville Middle School 6th grader won three events Thursday in her home track and field debut, giving her five victories across her first two meets.

Ward romped to wins in the 100, shot put, and long jump, setting PR’s in the latter two of those events.

Facing off with South Whidbey and Lakewood, the Wolves won 10 events and set 86 PR’s on a cold, wet “spring” afternoon.

Joining Ward on the victory stand was fellow 6th grader Hyley Farrell, who won the 200 and led off a victorious 4 x 200 relay unit.

That team also included 6th graders Kennedy O’Neill, Elizabeth Marshall, and Sage Stavros.

CMS 7th graders Lillian Ketterling (Discus), Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump), Roger Merino-Martinez (Long Jump), and Nick Laska (Discus) came out on top as well, with Kayla Crane (1600) the lone Wolf 8th grader to win an event.

Coupeville’s 6th/7th grade girls won the team title, joining Lakewood (6th/7th boys) and South Whidbey (8th girls, 8th boys) as front-runners.

Pulling off a successful home meet, especially on a dank day, took the work of many, with high school coaches and athletes helping their middle school counterparts.

CHS alum Jaylen Nitta, who has worked with both the middle and high school teams, stepped in to be the starter, and kept everything moving smoothly.

The young Wolves return to action next Wednesday, May 10, when they host South Whidbey for the final home meet of the season.

The Coupeville High School track and field team is doing things a little differently this year.

With 26 seniors on the roster and a hole in the schedule, Wolf coaches have scrambled to add a home meet Wednesday, April 19.

The Coupeville Classic Invitational, set to kickoff at 3:00 PM, allows CHS to have a real Senior Night ceremony, which often doesn’t happen in the world of track.

It also keeps the Wolves active, as they were looking at a two-week gap between off-Island meets.

Coupeville coaches will honor:

Ryanne Knoblich and Josh Guay competed in a track meet Wednesday and claimed Student of the Quarter awards from the Coupeville Lions Club.

Everything hummed along beautifully.

Coupeville High School hosted its first home track and field meet of the season Wednesday, the weather was sunny, and the Wolves dominated on the stat sheet.

By the time the final event was done, and the other six schools had departed, CHS had locked down a win in the boys’ team standings, and second place in the girls’ competition.

The Wolf boys destroyed all rivals, piling up 219 points, while runner-ups Mount Vernon Christian and Friday Harbor sat well behind with 108 and 94.5 points, respectively.

Coupeville’s female competitors went toe-to-toe with MVC, with the Hurricanes edging the Wolves 223-184. No one else was within 100 points of the top two.

Orcas Island, La Conner, Grace Academy, and Lopez Island rounded out the field, joining Coupeville, MVC, and Friday Harbor in the royal rumble.

When it came to individual athletes, the Wolves earned 11 wins and 90 PR’s.

Aidan Wilson (400, triple jump) was a two-time winner, while also joining Hank Milnes, Mitchell Hall, and Nick Guay on the fastest 4 x 400 relay squad.

Lyla Stuurmans (400), Claire Mayne (100 hurdles), Carolyn Lhamon (shot put), Katie Marti (javelin), Ryanne Knoblich (high jump), Zac Tackett (discus), Hall (1600), and Guay (high jump) also captured titles.

Coupeville returns to action this Saturday, when its younger stars compete in the Stanwood Frosh/Soph Invitational.

Coupeville High School track guru Elizabeth Bitting needs your help. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Volunteers make the world run.

Especially those who opt to help out for home track and field meets, where every person counts.

Coupeville hosts four meets this spring, including the high school district championships, and is in need of volunteers to keep things running smoothly.

No prior track and field experience is required, just a willingness to help.

“Our coaches will put you in positions where you feel comfortable and can explain how everything works,” said Coupeville High School/Middle School Athletic Director Willie Smith.

“Plus, our coaches absolutely guarantee great weather for all of the meets,” he added with a mischievous smile. “So that should not even be a concern of yours when considering.”

Volunteers need to be at meets, which are held at the stadium behind Coupeville Elementary, at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the event.

Coupeville’s home meets:

Wednesday, Mar. 22 — high school league meet — 4-6 teams — 3:30 PM
Wednesday, Apr. 26 — middle school league meet — 4 teams — 3:30 PM
Wednesday, May 10 — middle school league meet — 2 teams — 3:30 PM
Saturday, May 13 — high school district meet — multiple teams — 11:00 AM

To volunteer, contact a coach:

Bob Martin — bmartin@coupeville.k12.wa.us
Elizabeth Bitting — ebitting@coupeville.k12.wa.us
Doug McVey — dmcvey@coupeville.k12.wa.us
