Learn to love the road.

Looking ahead at fall sports schedules for Coupeville High School (hey, the first day of practice is Aug. 19, just a month away), that’s the theme.

Unless things change (always possible), three of the four Wolf teams (football, volleyball, girls’ soccer) will play more games on the road than at home.

The only team that currently has more home matches than road trips is the CHS boys’ tennis squad, and that’s deceptive, because that’s also the only team that obviously doesn’t have a finished schedule.

Little quirks to look forward to:

Wolf volleyball will be the first team to play in front of fans sitting on the newly-installed bleachers in the CHS gym, when it hosts South Whidbey Sept. 8.

By the time football plays at home, we’ll be firmly into the cold season, as the Wolf gridiron squad plays its first FOUR games away from Coupeville.

Schedules as they stand on July 18 (* = league game, and there is no way the tennis schedule is complete, so there’s that):

Shame on you, Canada.

Proving the “local” newspapers have learned nothing after the debacle of last year, we now sit three full days away from what is, for a small town, a big deal.

That deal is Coupeville High School’s Homecoming celebration, which included a parade through town, halftime festivities and the best football game I may have witnessed in 24 years of covering sports on Whidbey Island.

But, other than a story on the game (Sports Editor Jim Waller is on top of his game), the Canuck-owned Whidbey papers would have you believe none of that happened.

Not a single photo can be found on either the Whidbey News-Times or Whidbey Examiner web sites, as we careen head-long into being 72 hours past the events.

During that time, we here at Coupeville Sports have already published 50+ photos.

Cause, unlike the hosers up in Moose Jaw, we understand the importance of documenting small town life for the people who live in our small town.

Maybe the “local” newspapers will catch up to the rest of us, one day. Maybe next year.

If they’re still here…

Cheridan Eck is the Energizer bunny come to life.

As Friday night’s CHS Homecoming festivities played out, the Wolf cheer coach had already put in a long day.

You would never know it, however, as she bounced along to her team’s performance, watching every move with an eagle eye from the press box, mentally urging on her girls as they worked with a group of junior cheerleaders.

As her combined forces brought their performance to what seemed like a fairly flawless close, Eck jumped up, clapped her hands and mouthed a low “YES!!”

And then she was off to do the other million things she would accomplish before bedtime.

There was tiredness on his face. The lingering aftereffects of a bout with illness. Heartache and resignation after a last second loss.

But above all else, there was pride on Coupeville High School football coach Tony Maggio’s face Friday night.

His Wolves had taken Klahowya, a much larger school, to the final moments in a titanic 42-35 battle for a playoff spot, and he paid witness to every drop of sweat left on the sod at Micky Clark Field.

“The guys gave it their all. They left it all on the field. So, so proud of them.”

It was a feeling shared by many.
