Rockin’ the top knot.

He’s healthy, he’s back and he’s ready to lead the charge.

Coupeville High School quarterback Hunter Downes, who missed a chunk of his sophomore season last year due to injuries, is ready to reclaim his starting job as the Wolves welcome a new coach.

He’s been front and center during spring practices, and spent some time at the University of Washington recently, taking part in a summer football camp.

Along for the ride were some of his Wolf teammates, with the Toomey-Stout wrecking crew (Cameron and Sean) also in attendance.

Pointing to the future … sort of.

They’re light in numbers, but big on dreams.

With school out for summer, Coupeville Middle School football players are still hard at work, putting in practices under the watchful eye of gridiron guru Bob Martin.

As the Wolves get ready for a campaign which won’t officially start for a few months, they also found time to pose for a few pics, as seen above.

The frequently injured Hunter Downes. (John Fisken photo)

Downes has never shied away from contact, regardless of the sport.

An already thin Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad took another hit Tuesday night.

Sophomore Hunter Downes suffered a broken collarbone while putting in extra work after practice, and is expected to be out for six weeks, said mom Angie.

This injury follows on the heels of a previous one during football season.

Downes opened the year as Coupeville’s starting quarterback, but went to the sidelines after the first two games with a dislocated growth plate.

He returned late in the season for a quick curtain call, but only saw action in three of his team’s 10 games, completing 26 of 47 passes for 272 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.

The loss of Downes cuts the Wolf hoops roster (varsity and JV) to 17 players.

Of those, three guys (Gabe Eck, Cameron Toomey-Stout and Ty Eck) are still short of practices and one (Desmond Bell) is limping as we speak.

Coupeville opens the hoops season Monday on the road at Meridian.

Hunter Downes: American Bad-Ass (John Fiskenb photos)

Hunter Downes: American Bad-Ass (John Fisken photos)

Athletic success is pouring Down(es).

Angie Downes has gifted Coupeville schools with three talented sons — Hunter, Sage and the true superstar, Logan — and all three have made big impacts in the last couple of years.

Leading the pack is the oldest brother, the sling-it and wing-it QB (and today’s birthday boy), Hunter Downes.

Already the starting signal caller for the CHS football team before he hit the big 1-6, Hunter is one of those guys who tackles every sport he plays full-tilt, while never losing the grin that shows how much fun he’s having out there.

Relentless on the basketball court, where he beat opponents black and blue while winning the Mr. Hustle award as a freshman, Downes never backed down.

It’s a trait he has carried with him to the football field, where he has shot up the depth chart as he sailed through middle school ball and now on into his second year at CHS.

His day today is busy, I’m sure.

A birthday (the rock outside the school painted in his honor) and another practice as the Wolf gridiron squad prepares for Friday’s home opener, a tilt against Klahowya with huge playoff implications.

So, we won’t take up much more of his time.

But we do want to swing by long enough to say thank you to Hunter, for playing like a bat out of hell, and wish him a great birthday.

Keep kickin’ ass and takin’ names, Mr. Downes.
