No one worried about the score, but Friday was still important.

With Coupeville High School’s football team sitting eight days away from its season opener (Sept. 3 at home vs. South Whidbey), the Wolves got a chance to go out and hit someone who wasn’t their own teammate.

The occasion was a three-team jamboree down La Conner way, with Coupeville and Burlington-Edison filling out the marquee.

The game gave the Wolves a chance to run through their offense and defense under game-like conditions (and the watchful eye of first-year head coach Jon Atkins).

It also might have provided a little bit of an informal scouting session, as Coupeville returns to La Conner in Week 2 (Sept. 9) for a non-conference game with the Braves.

As the teams battled under a scorching sun, wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken worked the sidelines, capturing the late-summer gridiron action.

Spring is officially sprung.

Rain drops fell (of course) but a new season of Coupeville High School sports kicked off Friday afternoon, with the Wolf boys’ soccer squad hosting a jamboree.

South Whidbey, Lake Stevens and Skyline were in town and all the booting drew the attention of wanderin’ photo man John Fisken.

Having clicked away between the splatters of liquid sunshine, the photos above are courtesy him.

Spring is here.

Well, maybe not weather wise, but the Coupeville High School sports calendar says it’s almost time to pretend otherwise.

All five Wolf teams will kick off their season within the next week, and all here on the Island.

Boys’ soccer is up first, followed quickly (weather permitting) by softball and baseball, then girls’ tennis and, finally, track and field.

The CHS booters will host a jamboree at Mickey Clark Field this Friday (3 PM), with South Whidbey, Skyline and Lake Stevens in attendance, while Wolf baseball heads to Oak Harbor High School Saturday for its own taste of jamboree life.

The diamond men will play three-inning games against South Whidbey (12:30) and Oak Harbor (2 PM).

That same day, the Wolf softball squad is scheduled to be the first to play a real, full game, hosting South Whidbey (12 PM) in a non-conference tilt.

Wrapping up the openers for each Coupeville squad, tennis hosts Granite Falls (3:30 PM) Monday, Mar. 14 and track travels to Oak Harbor (3:30 PM) Thursday, Mar. 17 for the Island Jamboree.

And somewhere Mother Nature just laughs and laughs.

They’ve set the bar high and we appreciate it. Greatly.

A new season kicks off today.

With Coupeville High School still riding high off last night’s win at Chimacum, its middle school counterparts boarded the bus Saturday morning to head to a jamboree at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles.

CMS will play the host school, as well as Forks and Chimacum at the all-day affair, then lace it up for real Wednesday, Sept. 23 when Stevens comes to Whidbey.

That school, which the Wolves haven’t played before, boasts 600+ students and has a football roster that groans with 70 players.

By contrast, Coupeville coach Bob Martin has 26 guys to call on at the moment.

They are:

Noa Allen
Raymond Anderson
Trevor Jon Bell
Tyson Bovee
Michael Brewer
Koa Davison
Sage Downes
Dakota Eck
Trystan Ford
Mason Grove
Dawson Houston
Alex Jimenez
Elliott Johnson
Matthew Kelley
Gavin Knoblich

Andrew Martin
Jake Mitten
Omar Morales
Jacobi Pacquette-Pilgrim
Jonathan Partida
Gage Powers
Ben Smith
Sean Toomey-Stout
Arec Wilker
