"Are we not men?! Is this not bracing?!?! Yeah, screw that ...

Oscar Liquidano commands the field like a Roman general. “Are we not men?! Speak not of the cold!!”

There was a nip in the air, but that didn’t stop them.

The rain stayed away Monday, and, all bundled up, Coupeville High School athletes trundled outside for the start of spring sports.

Bouncing from field to field to capture the moment was roving photo man John Fisken, who provides the pics above capturing the Wolf boys kicking off their baseball, soccer and track seasons.

Camilla Rische

Camilla Rische

There are rumors that, on the day of her birth, Camilla Rische’s first word was “rah” and not “wah.”

For, if a person can be born to be a cheerleader, surely she was.

Through rain or shine, sleet or howling wind, out on the football field or inside a cozy gym, Miss Rische is the very definition of “loud ‘n proud” come to life.

In more ways than one.

She is fiercely loyal to the Wolves, a vibrant, boisterous young woman whose voice rises above the din.

She’s not there on the sideline just to stand around. The girl has work to get done.

But she’s also fiercely loyal to her family, starting with younger brothers Grey Rische and Jared Helmstadter.

The first time I ever spoke to her was when I was talking to her grandmother in the stands before a basketball game.

We were discussing Jared, as I was about to write a story about his amazing journey from being a preemie to becoming a rampaging force of nature on the basketball court.

Camilla, rocking back and forth in her seat, suddenly leaned forward and, in a voice that carried the same weight as Marlon Brando in The Godfather, informed me of the correct spelling of Helmstadter.

“H-e-l-m-s-t-a-gets complicated here-d-t-e-r!”

Long pause, eyebrow cocked…

“So get it right!!”

Long pause, then an explosion of giggles as she sat back in her seat.

That is Camilla.

Full of life, irrepressible, joyous, ready to smack you upside the head, sweet smile intact, if you mess with her family.

She is one-of-a-kind and Wolf Nation has benefited greatly from her presence the past few years.

As she celebrates a birthday today, we want to wish her all the best. May your day shine as brightly as you do, Miss Rische.

And, if you notice, I spelled Helmstadter correctly. So, there’s that, too.

It was a busy week for the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis squad, with two matches in two days, and the Wolves managed to get both played before the weather turned nasty.

Along for the ride, camera in hand, was Wolf mom Wendy McCormick, who provides the photos above.

Some days are just bigger than others.

In terms of Coupeville High School sports, June 26 is the real deal.

Two current Wolf stars, junior-to-be Jared Helmstadter (tennis, basketball, track) and just graduated Wade Schaef (football, baseball) celebrate birthdays today.

Topping the list is the patriarch of one of Coupeville’s legendary sports families — the one, the only, the Santa, Paul Messner.

Daughters Barbi (Messner) Ford, Christi Messner and Aimee (Messner) Bishop have all had their moments in the athletic spotlight, and granddaughter Breeanna Messner was just named as the CHS Female Athlete of the Year to cap her senior season.

Whether you’re celebrating your 17th birthday, or your 67th, it’s a good day to be a Wolf.

Well played, gentlemen. Well played.

The number of Coupeville High School track and field athletes advancing to tri-districts May 22 and 24 at Shoreline just got bigger.

In the complicated world of high school track, only one thing was a given going into this weekend’s District 1 meet, and that was that the top five finishers in each event advanced on.

After qualifiers from District 2 and 3 were added in, each event would have 13 of the 16 competitors. Those remaining spots would be filled by the best times/throws from any of the three districts.

And that’s where CHS surged, as sixth-place finishes such as freshman shot putter Skyler Lawrence and a couple of Wolf relay teams suddenly jumped back into the picture.

“Pretty good showing for the crew we assembled,” Coupeville coach Randy King said. “Many season bests in the sub-district and my, they were needed.”

Regardless of which Wolves go to tri-districts, the final stop before the state meet, they will face a tough test.

“No guarantees,” King said. “Our tri-district is loaded in the throws and sprints!  We just have to keep after it!”

Tri-District qualifiers:

GIRLS:

100 — Sylvia Hurlburt

200 — Makana Stone, Hurlburt

400 — Stone, Marisa Etzell

4 x 100 Relay — Etzell, Ashlyn Miller, Lauren Grove, Hurlburt

4 x 200 Relay — Hurlburt, Etzell, Grove, Stone

Shot Put — Skyler Lawrence

BOYS:

400 — Jared Helmstadter

4 x 100 Relay — Ryan Griggs, Brandon Kelley, Helmstadter, Lathom Kelley

4 x 400 Relay — L. Kelley, B. Kelley, Sebastian Davis, Helmstadter

Shot Put — Nick Streubel
