Crab, crab as far as the eye could see.

And desserts, and some adult beverages and salads flying through the air, they were all present Saturday.

The occasion was the Coupeville Booster Club’s annual Crab Dinner and Auction, which brings in bucks to help support Wolf athletics.

Current CHS stars were hard at work behind the scenes, former greats were on the floor, bidding and schmoozing, and travelin’ photo man John Fisken was working the room, camera in hand.

Wenzel

Up on her toes and ready to attack like a panther, Allison Wenzel shows the form that made her a defensive dynamo last season.

Now we see who wants it most.

The first day of high school basketball kicked off Monday, and when the Coupeville girls’ hoops squad hit the floor, they opened what should be an intriguing season.

The Wolves are the defending 1A Olympic League champs (both the varsity and JV went 9-0 last year), but only return three varsity vets in Makana Stone, Mia Littlejohn and Kailey Kellner.

Stone was a slam-dunk league MVP as a junior, when her 367 points in 22 games was the sixth-best single season performance in program history.

But, after the top three, it’s a wide open battle for positions, as the cream of last year’s JV squad faces off with a talented pack of freshmen.

Toss in a couple of complete newcomers, and every practice will count as Wolf coaches David and Amy King figure out their roster.

As the Wolves stretched and ran, and then stretched and ran some more, travelin’ photo man John Fisken came in from the stormy weather outside and clicked away, snagging us the pics that reside above.

Defense, first, last and always.

The first day of basketball practice brought a huge chunk of Wolf boys to the CHS gym Monday, and, once they were there, the early emphasis was on getting ready to defend.

The Wolves used pool noodles to work on posture, running through a defensive technique under the watchful eye of the Coupeville coaching staff and wanderin’ photo man John Fisken.

Looking to continue their upward climb — the Wolves won seven games last season, their best mark in four years — Coupeville has one sure thing in senior Wiley Hesselgrave.

After him, it’s a wide-open battle for positions, with a mix of returning players and promising newcomers, all dead set on being on the varsity roster come opening night.

Let the battle begin.

A great day for a swim.

A great day for a swim.

The landing formerly known as Keystone gets a closeup as the sea tries to reclaim its domain.

Now I see you...

Now I see you…

Now I don't.

Now I don’t.

water

Again. Why is no one out there swimming? It looks positively refreshing.

It’s a little breezy out there, I’ll give you that.

Not blow-so-hard-it-destroys-the-drive-in-theater-screen bad (THAT was a storm, younguns…), but still, all in all, Monday has been a decent tango with Mother Nature.

Fortified with much Diet Coke, travelin’ photo man John Fisken charged blindly into the eye of the storm to snap pics at both Ebey’s Landing and the Keystone (yes, I know they don’t officially call it that anymore) Ferry Landing.

Me? I stayed inside where it’s warm and dry.

It’s why I get the big bucks.

Wait? What do you mean I get no bucks?!?

Oh well, at least I’m dry. That’s a start.

aimee

Aimee Bishop, eternally thrilled to see the paparazzi.

We’re going to find every last one of them. Maybe.

As we twiddle our thumbs a bit in the period between fall and winter sports, it’s been a good time to go through all the pics from the previous season and look for some interesting ones which fell through the cracks.

John Fisken clicks hard for the money (or Diet Coke, as it were), so let’s not let too many of them get away.

To the photo vault, boys!
