We have launch!

We have launch!

They beat the rain by a day.

The wet stuff is falling all over the place Friday, but Thursday it was clear skies for the Coupeville Middle School track and field squad as they traveled down the Island to tangle with arch-rival Langley.

While we don’t have results to post yet (we’ll have to see if Langley coaches pull a Northshore and fail to report anything to athletic.net or step up and makes the whole Island proud), we do have photos.

They come courtesy of John Fisken, and, if you like them, head over to the link below to see more (and possibly purchase some). A percentage of all sales goes to fund college scholarships for CHS student athletes.

P.S. — I don’t know all the middle school students by sight, so some photos have names. Others don’t.

Allie Hanigan caps her high school tennis career. (John Fisken photos)

Allie Hanigan caps her high school tennis career. (John Fisken photos)

Graceful and gritty.

That’s Allie Hanigan, who capped a standout run as a Coupeville High School athlete with a fourth-place finish at the district tennis tourney.

After she and her family moved to The Rock from Kelso, Hanigan made an immediate impact for the Wolves as both a volleyball player — flying high above the net to deliver knee-buckling spikes — and as a netter.

She always made it look easy, yet never took the easy way out, always fighting to the last point regardless of the sport or the competition.

As she and her tennis teammates prepare for their final moments together at an awards shindig Thursday, we offer up this compilation of photos taken by John Fisken as Hanigan fought through her final match as a high school player.

Well done, Miss Hanigan. A class act to the end.

"Bye!!"

“Bye!!”

Every time she steps on the track, Makana Stone sets a PR or breaks a school record.

At least it seems that way.

The speedy Coupeville High School sophomore and her teammates blitzed through the first day of districts Wednesday and are set to return to Lynden to finish off the festivities Friday.

After that lurks the buzz of tri-districts and state.

While you’re waiting for it to all play out, take a gander at these fresh-off-the-presses photos courtesy travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

She just jumped over the freakin’ fence (sort of…)!!!

Please keep it down — the Canadian-owned “local” papers are trying to take a nap.

But while they’re snoozing and losing, it is up to us, the rogues of Coupeville Sports, to swoop and scoop.

Thanks to travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who ended up down in Lynden Wednesday for Day 1 of the 1A District 1 track championships, we have not just photos of Coupeville High School students, but (bite me, South Whidbey Record!), snappy pics of Falcon senior supernova Maia Sparkman.

Why her, you ask?

Because, at a time when I was cheesing off most of the South End of Whidbey, Ms. Sparkman was gracious enough to consent to do an interview and allow me to write a feature story about her (https://coupevillesports.com/2013/06/30/the-falcons-are-alright-maia-sparkman-sparkles/) and maybe soften my frosty relationship with Langley … a bit.

She didn’t have to, but she did. And she didn’t have to be so smart and well-spoken in her comments, but I kind of think that’s her natural persona.

So, while she may not wear the red and black, Ms. Sparkman remains one of my favorites, a young woman of grace and refinement who mixes book smarts with athletic prowess.

A young woman we all should be proud of, regardless of what part of the Island we live on.
