A thousand moving parts.

The year’s first home track meet was hardly a one-person show, as athletes, coaches, Athletic Directors, parents, fans, even a former Wolf legend or two, all milled about Thursday at Mickey Clark Field.

Working his way through the crowds, with just his cameras to clear some space, John Fisken snapped away, and the pics above are courtesy him.

“Get off me, ball!! Way to wear it, babe!!!” Coupeville catcher Sarah Wright leads the dugout chatter after a teammate gets plunked. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Mollie Bailey: “I’m stealing second, coach.” Ron Wright: “Don’t even think about it.” Bailey: “They don’t call me Wheels for nothing, my man.” Wright: “No one calls you Wheels, shorty. Do we have to have this conversation every freakin’ time you get on base?” Bailey: “Yes, yes we do…”

Young stars (l to r) Izzy Wells, Audrianna Shaw, and Coral Caveness ponder the fate of the universe.

Wells delivers the high, hard cheese.

There was a little bit of everything for everyone.

Saturday brought with it three Coupeville High School softball games, two for the varsity and another for the JV squad.

Toss in some rare early-spring sunshine, a lot of wins, and some steady camera-clicking by John Fisken, and it was a fairly complete day.

Battling the wind, James Wood cranks a corner kick. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Staring down the brisk breeze, a collection of Wolf stars jam the stands.

The Leyva lads lead the charge, with Aram (front) and Derek slicin’ and dicin’ the defense.

Cruddy weather, sunny attitudes.

Derek Leyva fires the ball into play.

Ever-efficient Wolf manager Natalie Hollrigel rules the roost up in the warm, dry, non-breezy press box.

CHS goalie Dewitt Cole sprawls out to stop a shot, while Wolf defender Teo Keilwitz comes charging in to help.

“Spring? I’m going to go have words with Mother Nature…”

The weather was wild ‘n windy, but at least I didn’t have to stand out in it.

While I was smartly sequestered in the press box Monday during Coupeville’s boys soccer clash with Mount Baker, grizzled paparazzi John Fisken braved the gusts to snap the pics seen above.

Sage Downes sends the ball away with a smile and a whispered “You can do it!”

Snoozing in the pre-game sunshine.

Back in action after recovering from a broken foot, Alex Jimenez smokes a pass across the field.

“Well, I’m just saying, if you’d listen to me the first time, maybe we wouldn’t be having this same conversation for the seventh time…”

Owen Barenburg, and the mightiest crop of hair in Wolf Nation, stretch out.

Having heard about the rascally deer who went viral after interrupting a CHS football game this fall, Mr. Whiskers makes his run for internet glory.

Sam Wynn, using the speed he honed as a cross country runner, leads the attack.

Maybe it really is spring.

Maybe…

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad opened a new season Saturday afternoon, throwing down goals against Chimacum under what looked suspiciously like blue skies and sunshine.

As any battle-hardened Central Whidbey sports fan will tell you, that can’t possibly be true, as “spring” sports in Cow Town are almost always accompanied by sideways rain and howling wind.

But, for the moment at least, the photos don’t lie.

Owen Barenburg (13) holds off a pesky rival, while Nathan Ginnings (21) keeps an eye on the developing action.

Wolf legend Mandi Black, on hand to cheer for nephew Xavier Murdy, nails the season’s first selfie.

CHS goalie Dewitt Cole denies Oak Harbor.

We’re officially back to action.

While the mini-games at Thursday night’s three-team boys soccer jamboree in Oak Harbor won’t affect anyone’s win/loss records, they do kick off the spring sports season.

Coupeville went up North to clash with South Whidbey and host Oak Harbor, a tune-up before the regular-season opener Saturday at home against Chimacum.

While playing on the frozen tundra, the Wolves had their photos snapped by John Fisken, who had a short drive from his nearby home.
