Brian Shank

Brian Shank is too quick for the La Conner defense.

Improvement, every day.

It’s what JV coaches look for, as they shape developing players who will, hopefully, one day run the floor at the varsity level.

So, while both of Coupeville’s younger squads fell to visiting La Conner Wednesday, girls coach Amy King and boys guru Dustin Van Velkinburgh were both able to come away with a fair amount of positives.

For the Wolf boys, it was the fact they stayed close to a talented Braves unit despite only suiting up six players.

Freshman Gabe Eck paced those who were in attendance, dropping in 17 of his team’s 37 points.

Brian Shank added 10, Ty Eck hit for six, Beauman Davis swished a trey and Cameron Toomey-Stout slid a free throw through the twines to round out the scoring.

James Vidoni chipped in with strong work on the boards.

The Coupeville girls also gave La Conner a good run, but were unable to match up with the visitors mix of quick dribblers and sharp shooters.

While they fell 44-33, the Wolves played well in the post and got big contributions from swing players Lauren Rose, Allison Wenzel, Kyla Briscoe and Skyler Lawrence.

Skyler played a presence in the key as always, ripping rebounds and directing her teammates,” King said. “The posts battled the whole game — Allison, Sarah (Wright), Brisa (Herrera), Lindsey (Laxton) and Nicole (Lester) all worked hard looking for the rebound or intercepting a pass.

“I was happy with the effort.”

King was also thrilled, and a bit amazed, by the foot work of guard Brittany Powers, who pulled off the play of the night on defense.

Brittany, somehow got in a great position for her legs to steal the ball … yes, her legs,” King said with a chuckle. “She grabbed the ball and passed it ahead up the court to Lauren. Fun to watch.”

Rose, who also saw some floor time in the Wolf varsity win, was on fire.

“Mouse” dropped eight points — tying her for the team lead with Briscoe — while snagging two boards and being a demon on defense.

Ema Smith (6), Wright (4), Maddy Hilkey (3), Lawrence (2) and Ashlie Shank (2) rounded out the CHS scoring attack.

Powers pilfered a team-high three steals, while Wright (7), Lawrence (6), Hilkey (5) and Smith (4) hit the boards with intensity.

Tension? What tension? The JV game might have been super close, but Brittany Powers (with water bottle), Sarah Wright (braids) and photo-bomber Lindsey Roberts are all smiles.

I mustache you ... how do you stop Makana Stone? Trick question, cause you don't.

Lauren Rose

“There can only be ONE!!!!!!” My money is on Lauren “Mouse” Rose winning this battle.

They are the school’s premier program.

Coupeville High School girls’ basketball is the only sport to have an absolutely perfect record in 1A Olympic League competition.

Since the league was created last year, the Wolf girls’ hoops squad have each gone 10-0 when facing off with Port Townsend, Klahowya and Chimacum.

Guided by David and Amy King, CHS continued their dominance Friday, with the varsity (47-38) and JV (26-24) both coming out on top in battles with the visiting Eagles.

As the Wolves rolled, travelin’ photo man John Fisken clicked away and some of his best pics can be found above.

BaYNE

Lauren Bayne planned ahead. Now that you’ve eaten turkey for three straight days, you’d pay extra for some crab legs, wouldn’t you?

So, it’s the day after the day after Thanksgiving, that time when you look in the frig and are like, “What? There are still leftovers in there?!?!”

You’re like, “Well, they’ve been in there for some time and they’re all stuck together…” and then you dive in and eat them all. You just do.

While I don’t have that 23rd slice of pie or the bite or two of cranberry sauce that got wedged in under the stuffing to offer, I do have some leftover photos.

Last Saturday was the Coupeville Booster Club’s biggest fundraiser event of the season — the annual Crab Feed and Auction — and photo whiz kids John Fisken and Ema Smith were there snapping away.

At the time, we ran photo essays by both of them, but, there were so many photos, we couldn’t use them all.

So now, a week later, I’m clearing out digital space and presenting to you the leftovers.

Just nuke them in the (mental) microwave and enjoy.

Valen (John Fisken photos)

Valen Trujillo shattered her school’s career record for digs this season and was rewarded by being named MVP Wednesday. (John Fisken photos)

lrose

Emma Smith (13), Lauren Rose (9) and Katrina McGranahan (11) all lettered, with Rose being tabbed as Best Teammate.

Valen Trujillo had herself quite a season.

The Coupeville High School junior smashed the school record for most digs in a career, was a captain for the Wolf spikers and Wednesday topped things off by being named MVP.

Trujillo’s award was the biggie as the CHS volleyball squad closed its season with an awards banquet, but she was far from the only Wolf honored.

Hope Lodell was tabbed Most Improved, Lauren Rose copped Best Teammate, Sydney Autio shared Captain honors with Trujillo and Tiffany Briscoe walked away with the A.C.E.S. Award.

That last one is given to a player who best demonstrates Coupeville volleyball’s four core covenants — attitude, competitiveness, effort and service.

On the JV side, Sarah Wright took home MVP, with Kayla Rose (Most Improved), Nicole Lester (Best Teammate) and Maddy Hilkey (A.C.E.S Award) joining her in making trips to the podium.

Taking home varsity letters:

Payton Aparicio
Sydney Autio
McKenzie Bailey
Kyla Briscoe

Aimee Bishop, eternally thrilled to see the paparazzi.

We’re going to find every last one of them. Maybe.

As we twiddle our thumbs a bit in the period between fall and winter sports, it’s been a good time to go through all the pics from the previous season and look for some interesting ones which fell through the cracks.

John Fisken clicks hard for the money (or Diet Coke, as it were), so let’s not let too many of them get away.

To the photo vault, boys!
