They’re 40% of the starting lineup for the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team, and 100% of the Lions Club students of the quarter.

Wolf seniors Ryan Blouin and Cole White, who kick off a busy week of hoops action Tuesday at home against La Conner, paused momentarily in their pursuit of hardwood excellence to claim their awards.

Blouin, a sweet-shooting three-ball terror, and younger brother of Alita, is the son of Shawn and June.

He juggles basketball with scooping tasty cones at Kapaw’s Iskreme and fulfilling community service projects with the National Honor Society.

Bringing in a 3.97 GPA while taking an eye-boggling number of AP classes, Ryan also works with youth basketball players in his (limited) free time.

With his tutelage, a bevy of mad gunners are learning to chuck it from the cheap seats — and make those treys.

Cole White, whose parents are School Board Prez Morgan and urban legend Greg, also refs and works with little kids learning the ways of the hardwood.

A fellow tasty treat purveyor at Kapaw’s, his spot in the National Honor Society is a given, since Riley’s big bro boasts a sweet ‘n lowdown 4.0 GPA while strolling through any AP classes they can throw at him.

The Lions Club honors two seniors per quarter, with attitude, scholarship, community service, sportsmanship, inspiration, contribution to school, and congeniality part of the assessment.

Ava Mitten and Zane Oldenstadt bask in the spotlight. (Coupeville Schools photo)

They’re the best at what they do — which is quite a lot.

All that hard work paid off, as Coupeville High School seniors Ava Mitten and Zane Oldenstadt were recently tabbed as Students of the Quarter by the Lions Club.

Honorees are selected each quarter by CHS staff and teachers, and at the end of the year two of the eight are named as the Students of the Year.

To be eligible, you need to be a senior and display qualities the Lions Club and school want to promote.

These include attitude, leadership, scholarship, community service, sportsmanship, inspiration, contribution to school, and congeniality.

Ava, whose grandfather Jack and uncle Jason are both in the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame, is a super talented artist who lit up the soccer field this fall.

Fleet-footed in the world of track and field, she’s a member of the Captain’s Club, has served on the Executive Board, is a member of the National Honor Society, and also participates in the Big Sister and United Student Leader programs.

Having racked up a 3.92 GPA, Ava favors environmental science, English, and art, and makes Grandma Carmen McFadyen super-proud.

In between all of her school activities, she also works part time at Windermere Realty, which is owned by parental units Eric and Aleshia Mitten.

But there’s more!

Ava, like older brother Jake before her, is also a busy bee when it comes to community service, volunteering at the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival, Career Day, Halloween events at Fort Casey and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Zane Oldenstadt is a three-sport athlete who bounces from football to basketball to either baseball or track and field, while also finding time to be a man about town.

Recently he posted pics of himself wearing a carved pumpkin on his head and hitting up numerous prairie hot spots, setting Instagram afire.

On the gridiron and hardcourt, Zane is a rock-solid enforcer as a lineman and paint protector, while also showcasing a solid shooting touch with the ball while playing hoops.

The son of Curtis Oldenstadt and Michelle Glass, Zane has a 3.6 GPA and shows a particular keenness for his science and history classes.

A member of the Captain’s Club, he’s put in time helping out at the Lions Club garage sale, the mussel festival, the arts and crafts shindig, and Fort Casey’s haunted house.

Last but not least, Zane has worked at both the Bayleaf and in landscaping.

And did I mention he wore a carved pumpkin on his head for an extended period of time? Cause that feels super important to me.

It’s a mad swirl of awards and scholarships being handed out in the days leading up to graduation.

The busiest time of the school year creates a madhouse atmosphere for teachers, admins, and front office personnel as everyone tries to stick the landing.

Coupeville High School held its awards night this past Monday, and, while I wrote about the athletic honors that night — this is an athletics-based blog, after all — here’s some more of what was handed out.

Ryanne Knoblich, who was the school’s Female Athlete of the Year, also brought home the Senior Service Award.

To be considered, a Wolf needs to make the top 10 in a vote by their fellow students, then win a faculty vote.

Criteria for the award includes “good citizenship, exemplary sportsmanship, being helpful to others, unselfishness, (while being) eager to assist faculty, administration, and the betterment of the entire school.”

Fellow seniors Mercedes Kalwies-Anderson and Milo Socha earned the Legacy Award, handed to students who “leave a positive legacy, and are a role model.”

Meanwhile, the Coupeville Lions Club, which honors two Wolves each quarter during the school year, tapped Karyme Castro Sotelo and Josh Guay as their Students of the Year.

Castro Sotelo played tennis and was a cheerleader as a senior, while Guay capped a four-year run as a Wolf track and field athlete.

Plus, he let me use some of his photos here on Coupeville Sports, so, extra credit.

“I have a report of incoming desserts. I’m going to need a total lock-down and all desserts brought to my office for … um … safekeeping.” (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Bake a cake and help fuel a student’s education.

The Coupeville Lions Club, which gives out college aid to CHS seniors, is gearing up for its annual scholarship auction, and is looking for a few bakers to help sweeten the deal.

A key part of the auction is the Dessert Dash, and last year the Lions brought in $6,000 towards their scholarships off of the 20 desserts up for bids.

To make the event a success, the club is looking for CHS senior parents or students willing to make a dessert for the auction.

If interested, contact Diana Swisher at caddyladyl@hotmail.com or (360) 678-6215 for the specifics.

Taichen Rose, moments before she disappeared under a wave of humanity.

As CHS athletic stars Allison Wenzel and Taichen Rose let loose with their air horns Saturday morning, a great wave of humanity crashed down on Coupeville Elementary School.

The event?

The 37th annual Coupeville Lions Garage Sale, where bargains stretch out as far as the eye can see, and you just need to be quick (and sharp-elbowed) to get to that elusive trash-turned-treasure first.

Throwing all personal safety to the wind, wanderin’ photo man John Fisken waded ashore, cameras blazing in a one-man bid to capture the event.

We’re not sure he made it back out alive, but, at the very least, his photos did.
