And so it begins.

The next wave of Coupeville girls hoops stars laid claim to the courts Monday with the start of a new season of middle school basketball.

A mix of established veterans like Maya Toomey-Stout, Melia Welling and Scout Smith, mixed in with young guns like Chelsea Prescott, Genna Wright and the heir to the Photo Bomb Queen throne, Mollie Bailey, are hard at work under the watchful eyes of coaches Bob Martin and Ryan King.

Their first game is Thursday, Feb. 18, when they host Chimacum (3:15 tip).

That kicks off a 10-game schedule in which the Wolves are home every Thursday and on the road every Monday.

"It's mah birthday!!!" (John Fisken photos)

“It’s mah birthday!!!” (John Fisken photos)

McKayla (top) and McKenzie Bailey

McKayla (top) and McKenzie Bailey, the best there ever was in the photo biz.

McKe

“Dang straight, Skippy!!”

The stare started with side-eye, and not just side-eye, but truly epic side-eye.

Then, without seeming to do so, McKenzie Bailey’s head turned 180 degrees and, over the top of her glasses, one eyebrow cocked, she regarded me as if I just asked her to lick a fresh cow pattie.

I had made the mistake of telling her mom, Donna, that with older sister McKayla about to graduate, little sis Mollie, several years shy of high school, was Coupeville Sports next true superstar, the chosen one who would inherit the crown of the one true Photo Bomb Queen.

Realizing  my mistake too late (a common occurrence in my life…), I started to stammer while McKenzie held the look for just long enough to send ice down the spine.

“I do not believe I have left this school yet, have I?”

One more beat to let the eyebrow fully cock, then she let me off the hook, her trademark light-up-the-prairie smile breaking through.

And really, could there have been any doubt that McKenzie, who celebrates a birthday today, is already primed to take over the throne held for so long by McKayla?

Photos, taking photos, being in photos, photo-bombing others in photos — it’s a time-honored Bailey Tradition.

Mollie will certainly get her moment, but not until McKenzie lets the crown reluctantly slip from her college-bound fingers in a year or so.

Not that photos are her only claim to fame.

A consistent three-sport athlete (volleyball, basketball, tennis), McKenzie was one of just two Wolves — with Wynter Thorne — to play on both of the CHS squads to win an Olympic League title last year.

A key contributor for both the basketball and tennis teams, which put up the first new championship banners in Cow Town since 2002, Bailey is the real deal.

She’s also a pretty phenomenal student — like big sis — and can probably drive a tractor with one hand while popping wheelies and playing the guitar intro to Nirvana’s “Come as You Are” with the other (why not?) if she wants.

Talented, vivacious, and as friendly as all get out (except when her rise to power is being questioned) McKenzie is a true original.

She’s got some McKayla in her, and a dash of Mollie, and vice versa, but the middle Bailey is her own amazing young woman.

Happy birthday, McKenzie. May your reign be as impressive as you are.

P.S. — That’s pretty dang impressive.

Taya Boonstra: Legend

Taya Boonstra: Legend

21 years ago a legend was born.

If rumors are correct, Taya Boonstra, at approximately ten seconds after birth, popped her eyes open, looked around and yelled “Hey, where’s my camera?!?!?”

Then, she found it, cocked a finger and winked at the photographer and we were off.

There is a long, proud tradition of camera-lovin’, photo bomb-workin’ young women attending Coupeville High School, but, really, when you get down to it, only two can go toe-to-toe at the very tip-top of the game.

One is urban legend/force of nature McKayla Bailey. The other the sensational, bright as a whip, fast ‘n fun Tatiana.

Or, as the Everett Herald used to love to call her from time to time, Taya Boonscara.

Taya is now, and has always been, a bright ray of sunshine in this world.

She is genuinely one of the sweetest, kindest, loveliest, most talented people you are ever likely to meet.

And I’m not just saying that because she once baked me cookies…

A lot of athletes have come and gone at CHS, and many more are on their way.

Some will achieve great athletic moments. Some will be top students. Some will be first-rate people.

Few will be able to combine all three aspects and effortlessly take it to the level that Miss Boonstra does every day.

As you celebrate your birthday today, Taya, and in every day after that, I hope you always know how much others think of you.

How proud of you we all are.

What a wonderful impact you have had, and continue to have, on everyone around you.

You spread grace and joy everywhere you go, Taya. That is a gift and you are the very definition of gifted, in every sense of the word.

Your first 21 years have been remarkable. All the years to come will just grow the legend even more.

McKayla Bailey

McKayla Bailey: The Best

There will be a day, too soon, when McKayla Bailey will no longer be a student/athlete at Coupeville High School.

On that day, I may cry. For a very long time.

Miss Bailey, who celebrates the final birthday of her high school days today, is nothing less than the reason Coupeville Sports exists.

Without her, will there even be a reason to go on?

I may start crying now…

Talented athletes come and go, but no one else has had quite the same impact McKayla has had.

And it’s not because of what she can do on a softball diamond or a basketball or volleyball court or soccer pitch. Even when she was impressive, as she often has been, and will be again once her injured arm heals.

She is bigger than that, though.

McKayla is a bright, shining superstar because the camera loves her, she loves the camera right back and every time she sees one, something magical happens.

She is an exuberant, free-wheeling force of nature in real life and the many pictures we have run of her on this blog show that in crystal clear detail.

Bailey loves life and it comes through in every action, whether she’s being goofy, being an attentive big sister to McKenzie and Mollie (who have both inherited her ease in front of a camera) or, on the rare occasion, exploding in anger.

I have seen her royally pissed, pacing around like a caged lioness in the pitching circle, slapping her thigh repeatedly with her glove, aiming daggers at the poor girl about to step into the batter’s box.

Boom-bam-boom.

Strike one, strike two, strike three, a small grin escapes and then she goes bonkers, chasing her teammates into the dugout and jumping on them, unable to contain her re-found glee.

The thing that sets Coupeville Sports apart the most from the Canadian-owned newspapers is our willingness, our burning desire, to run as many glossy pics as possible.

They can cover the same games we do, but we capture the highs and lows better with liberal uses of eye-catching photos.

And, while game photos are often dramatic, many of the most memorable ones have come from pre-game and post-game shenanigans, a place where McKayla thrives.

I have noticed that high school and middle school female athletes as a whole tend to be much more open to being goofy and embracing the chance to act up for the cameras than their male counterparts.

Maybe it’s an ingrained thing, since most team photos of boys’ sports usually feature snarls and tough guy looks, while the girls are usually one epic team-wide smile.

No one beams brighter, or longer, than McKayla Bailey.

Hunter Hammer was the rarity, a guy who played to the camera, a six-foot-seven photo bomb impresario.

Taya Boonstra was awesome, as was Haley Sherman, while Breeanna Messner lit up the joint (and her photos) with a quiet, graceful glow.

Madeline Strasburg, Kacie Kiel, Hailey Hammer — the Class of 2015 has a bevy of camera-lovin’ stars and junior McKenzie Bailey can bring it almost as strongly as big sis.

Keep an eye on freshman Lauren Rose, who could be the next big breakout Photo Queen.

But they all are at least a sliver behind McKayla, who has made it look effortless seemingly forever.

A moment ago, she was a “diaper dandy” (and yes, I still hear about that, and I still say, go talk to Dick Vitale, it’s a compliment), now, she’s on the cusp of graduation.

On this, her special day, I want to wish Miss Bailey a wonderful birthday, of course.

More than that, though, I want to say thank you.

Thank you for making all of this so much fun. For being the spark that lit the fire.

For letting me post photos of you in surgery, for always letting John Fisken or Shelli Trumbull take “just one more photo” regardless of your mood at the moment (and always working that photo for all you are worth), for putting up with me and the often idiotic things I write under your photos, for inspiring me to find joy again in my writing.

I have gotten more personal satisfaction out of two-plus-years of doing Coupeville Sports than I did out of 15 years of freelance work (and two years as a Sports Editor) for the Whidbey papers.

It’s a different style, a different flow, a different view and it wouldn’t have blossomed the same without that one unassuming, blissful ball of fire willing to put herself at the center of the whole thing.

Thank you McKayla, for being awesome. For being amazing. For being you.

Taya Boonstra: American Legend

Taya Boonstra — she doesn’t mind if you take her photo.

Taya Boonstra is God’s gift to photographers.

Part of a proud tradition of camera-friendly Coupeville High School athletes that includes McKayla Bailey, Hunter Hammer and Caleb Valko, Ms. Boonstra never met a camera she couldn’t photo bomb.

During her time as a Wolf, whether she was doing time as a cheerleader or playing in the games herself, the irrepressible one always sparkled on camera.

She played her rear off on the court and diamond, but never failed to keep one eye cocked for a wandering camera.

Now a student at the University of Washington, Taya celebrates her birthday today. The legend turns 20.

And on this day, and every other day, we celebrate her — one of the classiest, sassiest to ever wear the red and black.

She made her town a better place, and she will always be held in high regard by those who have known her.

You are the gold standard, Ms. Boonstra. Never change.
