Big meet, big results

“It was a crazy day.”

The Coupeville High School track and field team survived and thrived Saturday at the nine-team Port Angeles Invitational.

By the time the day was done, the Wolves had collected 10 individual wins — including a tie — and set 39 PR’s, all while dealing with a year’s worth of weather compressed into a few hours.

“Weather wise, (we had) wind, rain, hail and sun!” said CHS girls coach Elizabeth Bitting. “As one athlete put it, ‘Each event had different weather’.”

The invitational, which featured four 2A schools, a pair of 2B schools (including Coupeville), and three 1B schools, ran varsity and JV versions of every event.

Schools were limited to one entry in each varsity competition.

The 2A schools, with much-deeper rosters, dominated team scoring, with Sequim winning the varsity boys title, while tying with North Kitsap for the girls crown.

CHS was third in varsity girls and fourth in varsity boys.

On the JV side, Port Angeles (girls) and North Kitsap (boys) stood tallest, with both Wolf squads finishing fourth.

Coupeville emerged from the meet with six varsity crowns and four JV ones.

Senior Logan Martin (shot put and discus) topped the individual varsity winners, with Carolyn Lhamon (shot put), Ryanne Knoblich (high jump), Aidan Wilson (800), and Lyla Stuurmans (triple jump) ruling their events.

On the JV side, Lhamon (discus), Knoblich (long jump), and Cristina McGrath (triple jump) won, with the duo of Caleb Meyer and Nick Guay tying for top honors in the high jump.

It was a quick turnaround for Coupeville, which competed at a Northwest 2B/1B League meet in La Conner Thursday afternoon.

But rested or not, the Wolves stepped up.

“The athletes are finding their groove and achieving more PR’s,” Bitting said.

“We are proud of their efforts today and would like to give a big shout out to the parents who volunteered to help the meet run smoothly.”

   When he wasn’t strumming his guitar, Mitchell Carroll finished 3rd in the triple jump.

The competition was deep, but Coupeville rose to the occasion.

Competing at the 13-team Port Angeles Invitational Saturday, the Wolf track team racked up 26 PRs, with an especially strong showing on the girls side of the competition.

The Wolf girls, sparked by a second-place showing in the 200 from Sylvia Hurlburt, and thirds in the 100 hurdles (Lindsey Roberts) and discus (Skyler Lawrence) placed 7th as a team.

That was the best showing by a 1A school, putting them ahead of Olympic League rivals Klahowya and Chimacum, as well as non-conference foe Forks and three 1B schools.

Sequim took the title, with the top six schools all being 2A.

On the boys side, 2A North Kitsap finished on top, while Coupeville, whose best showing was a third in the triple jump from Mitchell Carroll, placed 11th overall in the team race.

Teams were allowed to have one competitor in each varsity event, with everyone else competing as JV athletes.

Jordan Ford took home Coupeville’s lone title on the day, winning the JV long jump.

It wasn’t his longest throw ever, but it had the biggest impact.

Launching the discus a season-best 114 feet, two inches Saturday at the Port Angeles Invitational, Wolf junior Dalton Martin captured the first win of his three-year CHS track career.

His exploits, besting an 11-man field at the 13-team meet, earned him the spotlight along side the girls’ 4 x 200 relay unit (Kirsten Pelroy, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone), which destroyed all foes in claiming their own title.

Led by the relay win, and several third-place finishes, the Coupeville girls finished sixth in the team standings.

They beat 2A Kingston, outpaced Olympic League rivals Klahowya and Port Townsend and had the best finish of any 1A school.

The Wolf boys, who have a thinner roster, finished ninth.

The meet drew six 2A schools, four 1A schools and three 1B schools for an afternoon of competition.
