It was the perfect way to swing into spring break.

Sweeping all three singles matches Thursday, including one which went almost three hours, and getting a unique win at first doubles, the Coupeville High School netters were in top form.

By the time the Wolves climbed back on the bus for the trip back to Whidbey, they carried the scalp of a large 2A school with them, having pasted Port Angeles 5-2.

The non-conference win lifts CHS to 1-3 on the season and was sweet payback after it fell 4-3 to 2A schools in both its last two matches.

Coupeville is off now until April 10, when it faces, yep, another large 2A school, this time North Kitsap.

The Wolves don’t play their first 1A Olympic League match until April 13.

Thursday, the highlights came at first doubles and second singles.

With normal partner Payton Aparicio not available, Sage Renninger paired up with little sister Avalon instead at first doubles, and the family connection paid off with a sweet straight-sets win.

Sage, a junior, is now 4-0 on the season, best of any Wolf player.

The longest, and most thrilling win, came from the Renninger’s housemate, foreign exchange student Fanny Deprelle, who waged a back-and-forth war before pulling out a three-set thriller.

Fanny’s match was a doozy,” said Coupeville coach Ken Stange. “She played her equal — someone who can run all day, and return almost every ball.”

Emphasis on “almost,” as Deprelle battled from a set down, forced a third-set tiebreaker and made her housemates, coach and large fan club jump with joy.

They stared down the big boys (and girls).

Facing off with three much-larger schools, the Coupeville High School track and field squad claimed five wins and 31 PRs Thursday at a six-team meet in Port Angeles.

The 1A Wolves, who went up against 2A schools Olympic, Kingston and Port Angeles, as well as 1B teams Clallam Bay and Neah Bay, did well across the board.

Coupeville got wins from Lindsey Roberts (100 hurdles), Jacob Smith (200), Danny Conlisk (800), Jacob Martin (javelin) and the girls 4 x 100 relay team.

That unit, which consists of two returning members from a squad which placed 6th at state last year, and two newcomers, was running together for the first time in competition.

Lauren Grove, a senior, and Roberts, a sophomore, are the holdovers, while freshmen Maya Toomey-Stout and Mallory Kortuem are replacing the graduated Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone.

Along with the wins, CHS nabbed seven second-place finishes, including two from senior thrower Skyler Lawrence (shot put, discus).

Bree Daigneault is trapped in a tennis racket of emotion as the first week of competition looks like it may be rained out. (John Fisken photo)

And so it begins.

Certain spring sports, like, say, tennis, exist at the whims of the rain gods.

Last year was pretty dry for the Coupeville High School netters, so this year? Probably time to build a new Noah’s Ark.

Opening day fell victim to the wet stuff, as Port Angeles called off Monday’s non-conference match before the Wolves even headed to the bus.

Up next for CHS, a possible road trip to Langley Tuesday, followed by a home match-up with Sequim Thursday.

But, a quick glance at the 10-day weather report shows nothing but rain on Whidbey until Sunday, so good luck with that.

Now, back when I played tennis at Tumwater High School, our coach, Lionel Barona, sent us inside to run staircases in the gym on rainy days.

No word yet on whether Coupeville net guru Ken Stange plans to follow suit.

Emma Smith (John Fisken photos)

Hope Lodell

Hope Lodell was everywhere, racking up eight aces, eight digs and four kills.

Now this is hearsay, and if I was still masquerading as a “responsible journalist,” I probably wouldn’t bring it up.

But I’m a blogger, and not a particularly impartial one, so screw all that.

The word on the streets, and by streets, I mean rippling through the Coupeville High School gym Thursday night, was Port Angeles didn’t want to be there.

Coming from a 2A school, and a big one at that (876 students), the Rough Riders felt they were “too good” to be facing the Wolves (6th smallest 1A school in the state with 227 students) on the volleyball court.

Word is they tried to send their JV team in place of their varsity, but were turned down.

Well, guess what? That JV team might have had better luck.

Because, on this night, the red-hot and rollin’ Cow Town Express flattened the big city folks, smushing them in straight sets in a match which was never, ever close.

The 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 non-conference win lifts Coupeville to 7-2, gives them a five-match winning streak and proves once again — size ain’t nothin’ but a thing.

Port Angeles came in at 5-2 and they left badly scarred, unable to blunt a nasty Wolf service attack, and unable to compete against a team that won as a team.

“We played clean and focused; that’s what I’m excited about,” said CHS coach Cory Whitmore. “We had a nicely balanced offense, nearly everyone was in the positive on their hitting percentages and all our stats were pretty evenly distributed across the board.”

The only time Coupeville trailed in the first set was at 1-0, and the Wolves quickly corrected that.

Riding a hot streak at the service line from Hope Lodell, who was bobbing and weaving and jumping out of her shoes (like usual) as she fired BB’s, the Wolves went up 5-1 and never looked back.

Payton Aparicio lashed a scorching winner right down the line to kick-start things, and her teammates quickly followed her example.

Making her grandpa sit up proudly in the stands, Emma Smith whipped several spikes off of Rough Rider arms and legs, before Tiffany Briscoe capped the set with an especially emphatic put-away.

Mom Amy Briscoe came a bit unglued in the post-winner celebration, though little did she know she’d later top it when her daughter went skyward to stuff a Port Angeles spike.

“Was that Tiffany? Was THAT Tiffany?!,” laughed CHS softball coach Kevin McGranahan as the Briscoe clan shimmied in their seats.

The Rough Riders put together a brief rally to open the second set, lurching to a 7-3 lead before the very-calm Wolves settled right back into a groove.

A note-perfect tip off of Katrina McGranahan’s index finger, which split two defenders and skipped away for a winner, swung the momentum back to the home side.

From there, it was back to ripping serves Port Angeles could do little with (whether it was McGranahan, Ashley Menges or Valen Trujillo at the line) and big put-aways from the heavy hitters.

Rising up with a vengeance, Mikayla Elfrank ripped some flesh off of rival thighs with a laser that tattooed at least two Rough Riders.

Not to be outdone, Lodell responded quickly, going airborne, reaching far back over her head while twisting her body into a pretzel, then uncorking a blast that sent a sonic boom rippling through the gym.

In response, proud papa Mike Lodell made a sound not unlike that of a kid hitting puberty while also learning to sing heavy metal for the first time.

Putting a final stamp on the night, Coupeville closed like a boss.

With Port Angeles having crept within 23-21 in the third set, the Wolves tied the ribbon on the big-school butt-whuppin’ with back-to-back Sports Center highlights.

Elfrank exploded a winner off the back-line, making a Rough Rider in the back row swing and miss, then Lodell, twirling the ball like a gunslinger twirling her six-shooter, zipped a service ace for Coupeville’s 75th, and final, point.

As Whitmore said, the stats were very balanced.

Lodell led the Wolves with eight service aces, eight digs and four kills, while Trujillo had six aces, seven digs and a virtually flawless passing percentage.

Menges (11) and Lauren Rose (9) shared the assist load, with Smith smashing a team-high five kills and collecting a season-high two blocks.

McGranahan (four kills, five aces and a block), Briscoe (three kills, a block), Elfrank (three kills) and Menges (three aces) rounded out the attack.

Not all losses are equal.

While the final tally of Tuesday’s season-opening boys’ tennis match in Port Angeles didn’t come out Coupeville’s way — the Wolves fell 4-3 to a much-larger school — coach Ken Stange exited fairly satisfied.

“Close match, though,” he said. “Our doubles teams were simply dominant. Today’s match will go a long way toward prepping us for the league matches.”

Coupeville, the defending 1A Olympic League champs, is playing six of its eight non-conference matches this season against 2A schools.

While going up against teams like the Roughriders won’t be easy, the experience should help prepare the Wolves for their showdown with league rivals Klahowya and Chimacum.

CHS won three of four doubles matches Tuesday, with #2 duo William Nelson and Joey Lippo rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win in less than a half hour of court time.

Port Angeles rallied to the win with stellar play in singles, sweeping all three matches.

The best battle of the day came at first singles, where Wolf Nick Etzell, playing through an injury, managed to stretch his match to a full three sets before running out of steam.

“He put up a heck of a fight on a bad wheel,” Stange said.
