Olivia Schaffeld was one of many Wolves to showcase their talent this season.

It’s the end of the season, but not the end of the road.

The Coupeville Middle School volleyball squads wrapped up play Tuesday with a trip to Lakewood to face a big-school rival which feeds a large 2A high school.

While the young Wolves were swept, there were bright spots, with the #1 CMS team taking a set and the #3 team pushing their hosts hard in two of three sets.

Plus, with another season of middle school ball under their belts, the Coupeville players are a year closer to joining the high school program, and bringing all their talent with them.

How the season finale played out, according to the stat sheets (if I’m reading them correctly):

Level 1:

Coupeville’s top squad is mostly made up of 7th graders who have spent their season learning under fire against teams dominated by 8th graders.

Tuesday, the Wolves pushed Lakewood hard, before falling 25-11, 23-25, 15-10, leaving their final record at a deceptive 1-9.

Olivia Schaffeld went out with a bang, bringing home 14 points on her serve for CMS, while Mia Farris (8), Grey Peabody (7), and Savina Wells (6) also sparkled.

Joining them on the scoring chart were Taylor Brotemarkle (5), Chloe Marzocca (3), Lyla Stuurmans (2), and Katie Marti (1).

Level 2:

The Wolves came up short, dropping a 25-19, 25-5, 15-7 decision, but finished with the best record of Coupeville’s three teams at 6-4.

Madison McMillan, who was a vocal leader for CMS all season, tallied eight points, while Aby Wood brought seven home.

Also scoring were Jada Heaton (4), Allison Nastali (4), Brionna Blouin (2), Skylar Parker (2), Kaitlyn Leavell (2), Ava Mitten (1), Laila Wenzel (1), and Issabel Johnson (1).

Level 3:

Coupeville came strong, but couldn’t quite topple Lakewood in a 25-20, 25-11, 15-13 royal rumble.

The young guns, who finished 1-9, were led by Bailey Thule’s eight points and Jackie Contreras’s seven, while Maryah Love, Gabriella Becktell, and Bryley Gilbert tossed in six apiece.

Jones Walther (4), Kaylee Clark (4), and Kassidy Upchurch (3) rounded out the scoring.

The final performance? Impeccable.

Fighting through rampant illness, then enduring a bus trip to the wilds of Granite Falls Tuesday, the Coupeville Middle School girls basketball teams closed their seasons with a bang.

Two wins, one of which capped an undefeated season for a Wolf squad, and a narrow loss in the third game, was the order of the day.

How it played out:

8th grade varsity:

Granite came out swinging (literally), but was no match for the Wolves, who cruised home with a 44-26 win to seal the deal on a flawless 9-0 season.

As the game progressed, at least three Coupeville stars were left seeing … stars, as Alita Blouin took an elbow to the eye, Maddie Georges had her nose rearranged, and Gwen Gustafson was body-slammed to the floor.

That last melee drew a technical foul on the hosts, but all the bangs and bruises in the world were no match for the high-flying Wolves.

Blouin, living up to her nickname of “The Assassin,” rained down unholy pain on Granite, torching the joint for a season-high 15 points.

The slash-and-destroy guard scored in every quarter, tossing in five field goals, ruffling the nets for a pair of free-throws, then stabbing Granite through the heart with a three-ball.

Coupeville is far from a one-woman team, however, with its top four scorers finishing within nine points of each other this season.

Tuesday, while Blouin was slashing to the hoop and popping from outside, Coupeville’s dominant post players, Carolyn Lhamon and Nezi Keiper, were the perfect complement, throwing down 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Up 10-7 at the first break, with four players already in the scoring column, the Wolves steadily built the lead from there.

With coach Alex Evans pulling all the right strings, and every player on the floor attacking relentlessly, CMS surged to a 23-12 lead at the half, before shoving the margin out to 35-19 heading into the fourth.

Seven of the 10 players to see action scored, led by the trio in double figures.

Georges, Gustafson, Ryanne Knoblich, and Jill Prince rounded out the attack, with a bucket apiece, while Hayley Fielder, Jordyn Rogers, and Jessenia Camarena also saw floor time.

7th grade varsity:

The only loss of the day, but a nail-biter until the end.

“We were always just right there; just needed one more minute!,” said CMS coach Megan Smith. “But proud of the way the girls played.”

The 24-19 loss drops Coupeville’s final record to 2-8, but that’s a bit deceptive.

Smith’s top two scoring threats, Brionna Blouin and Lauren Marrs, only played together six times during the 10-game schedule, as illness had other plans for the Wolf duo.

Tuesday was one of those six games, and they proved how potent they can be when they get a chance to work together.

Marrs went off for a game-high 13, scoring in every quarter and netting a three-ball, while Blouin returned from sick leave to bank in six points in support.

The game was knotted 8-8 after the first quarter, with Marrs having already scored in every possible way, hitting a trey, a field goal, and a free-throw.

The offense slowed down a bit in the second quarter, with Granite holding a 6-2 advantage, and that would prove to be a killer for the Wolves.

The two teams battled almost evenly across the final 14 minutes of the season, but the Tigers stretched the lead ever so slightly with a 6-5 third frame, before the teams closed with a 4-4 stalemate in the final quarter.

Smith got quality floor time for every one in uniform, with Jackie Contreras, Reese Wilkinson, Allison Nastali, Erica McGrath, Kaitlyn Leavell, Desi Ramirez, Skylar Parker, and Kayla Arnold chipping in with defense and hustle.

8th grade JV:

Someone check what Jessenia Camarena had for breakfast, because she was unstoppable.

Pouring in a season-high nine points in just two quarters, the defensive dynamo transformed into an offensive whirlwind, pacing Coupeville to an 11-8 win.

The victory, which comes after the  JV had to sit out back-to-back games, thanks to other schools battling their own spring cold and flu season, lifts the Wolves final record to 3-5.

While she got a bit of help from Claire Mayne, who slipped through the Granite defense for a first-quarter bucket, this was Camarena’s game, from start to finish.

She tossed in two buckets to go with Mayne’s basket, as CMS built a 6-2 lead after one quarter of action.

Not content to stop there, Camarena knocked down another field goal, and a three-ball, to account for all of Coupeville’s scoring in the second, and final, frame.

Setting her up for the offensive explosion were her teammates, who harassed the Granite ball-handlers and hit the boards with intensity.

Karyme Castro, Abigail Ramirez, Mercedes Kalwies-Anderson, Adrian Burrows, Prince, Rogers, McGrath, and Contreras rounded out the active roster.

Final scoring totals for the 2019 season:

Kailey Kellner tossed in eight points Saturday during the final game of her sophomore basketball season at D’Youville College. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Kailey Kellner reached the end of the season doing what she does best – putting the ball in the bucket.

The Coupeville grad, now a sophomore at D’Youville College in New York, rattled the rim for eight points Saturday as the Spartans celebrated Senior Night with an 82-67 win over visiting Franciscan University.

The victory lifts D’Youville’s final record to 7-11 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action, 10-15 overall.

The top six teams in the league advance to the playoffs, but the Spartans missed out on a postseason berth by a single win.

D’Youville finished strongly, winning two of its final three games, but a 2-7 stretch right before that made it hard to climb any higher in the 10-team conference.

From the outside, one could argue Kellner should have gotten more playing time, since the turnaround started when the former Wolf was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season.

Saturday, the Spartans honored seniors Monica June, Darian Evans, and Jordan Smith, then put the game away in the second quarter.

After heading into the first break knotted up at 12-12, D’Youville went on a 21-12 run across the next 10 minutes.

Kellner tossed in four of her eight points during the surge, and from there it was easy street for the Spartans.

Coasting home for the win with 26-24 and 23-20 advantages across the final two quarters, D’Youville sent its seniors, and the fans, back out into the 29-degree Buffalo weather with smiles on their faces.

Filling up the stat sheet, Kellner snatched four rebounds and dealt out an assist to go along with her eight points.

For the season, if you believe the D’Youville stat page (and that’s questionable, as Kellner was dinged twice this season by score-keepers who gave credit for her baskets to others), Coupeville’s progeny finished with 76 points, 44 rebounds, 17 assists and four steals.

Her best stat was her free-throw shooting, where she knocked down 14 of 19 shots. That pencils out to 73.7%, and was among the best totals posted by a Spartan in 2018-2019.

With an unexpected tie-breaker game popping up on the schedule, high school basketball fans got to spend one more evening on the hardest bleachers in the world.

Along for the ride, though not sitting on the butt-bustin’ bleachers, was ever-busy paparazzi John Fisken, who delivers the pics seen above.

Freshman Andrew Aparicio rebounded “like a beast” Friday, as Coupeville’s C-Team wrapped its season. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The seeds have been planted.

When Scott Fox stepped on the court this season, his first as coach of the Coupeville High School boys C-Team basketball squad, he found a batch of very raw players.

What a difference two months make.

“That first practice, it took us a half hour to run a three-man weave drill,” he said with a chuckle. “And now here we are competing with a solid team like Cedar Park Christian and putting together our best game to date.

“I’m really proud of these kids.”

Friday night’s home game against CPC was the season finale for the C-Team, and they went out scrapping all the way.

Down by just a single point at the half, the Wolves lost leading scorer Jaylen Nitta to a recurring injury and eventually fell 45-29, but Fox walked out of the gym wearing a proud grin.

“We rebounded toe to toe with them,” he said. “Andrew (Aparicio) was like a beast out there tonight, and Chris (Cernick) and Miles (Davidson) were right there with him.”

Before he went down with his injury, Nitta tossed in a team-high 12 points, while Aparicio added a season-best five of his own.

Brayden Coatney (4), Jonathan Partida (4), Ben Smith (2), and Tony Garcia (2) rounded out the Wolf attack.
