No tennis courts, no worries.

Making the best out of an odd situation, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team celebrated its seniors Wednesday the way it has played all of its matches this season — on the road.

This time that meant popping over to Town Park, where the team’s 12th graders, Kaitlyn Leavell and Skylar Parker, played a pro set against each other.

Refreshments were enjoyed, flowers were bestowed, silly string was fired off, and the Wolves honored the core of its team, who won’t be playing next season when currently under-construction CHS courts are finally available.

The weather (barely) cooperated Saturday, allowing Coupeville High School baseball to honor its veterans.

With the rain holding off for a bit, the Wolves braved the blustery conditions to pay tribute to their four seniors, then went out and whacked visiting Darrington to move into sole possession of first place in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

Seniors Cole White, Seth Woollet, Aidyn McDermott, and Peyton Caveness have been at the forefront as the CHS diamond squad has come on strong in the second half.

And while Saturday’s rumble was likely their last at home — barring a reschedule of a Concrete game washed away by Mother Nature — there’s still more games to play.

On to La Conner next week, then the playoffs after that.

But first, a moment in the (overcast) spotlight for the old dudes.

Alone in first place.

After thrashing visiting Darrington 11-1 Saturday on Senior Night, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad sits atop the Northwest 2B/1B League standings by itself.

Garnering their seventh-straight conference victory, the Wolves get to 8-2 in NWL play, pushing them a half game up on Orcas Island (7-2), which had its weekend game rained out.

Coupeville has one sure thing left on the schedule, traveling to La Conner next Thursday, May 2.

There’s been no official word yet on whether CHS will get a chance to make up its game with Concrete which was washed away by Mother Nature earlier this week.

Regardless, the Wolves, who sit at 9-8 overall, are playing their best ball of the season with the playoffs just around the corner.

Saturday, having outlasted the rain, but not the wind and cold, Coupeville’s diamond men outhit Darrington 6-4 and won the battle of walks 12-0.

Five of those free passes came from Wolf hitters getting plunked, as the Logger hurlers were a bit wild while trying to throw through the prairie breeze.

“Just try and hit this!”

Meanwhile, CHS pitchers Seth Woollet and Peyton Caveness, two of the four hometown seniors honored before the game, threw with utter precision.

Joined by Cole White and Aidyn McDermott in the Class of 2024, the mound duo combined for seven strikeouts while muffling Darrington for most of the afternoon.

The visitors actually had two runners aboard in the top of the first, but came up empty, thanks to Woollet inducing a weak groundout at crunch time.

His teammates immediately pounced, throwing down two runs in their half of the frame to effectively end the game before the fans even had time to complain about how it’s April 27 and where is the frickin sunshine??

White led off with a walk, then cruised home after Chase Anderson thumped a triple to right. A bobbled ball on a hot shot off of the bat of Caveness added to the early rally.

Peyton Caveness takes a mighty cut.

From there, Coupeville steadily poured it on, pushing a run across in the third, four more in the fourth and three in the fifth.

The game’s final run, courtesy Woollet being hit by a wayward pitch, before moving steadily around the bags thanks to a passed ball, wild pitch, and grounder from Coop Cooper, ended the game in the sixth, as the mercy rule was enforced.

Before getting there, Coupeville got big run-scoring hits from Johnny Porter, Caveness (twice), and Camden Glover.

Saturday stats:

Chase Anderson — One triple, one walk
Peyton Caveness — One single, one double
Coop Cooper — One double, two walks
Camden Glover — One single
Aidyn McDermott — One walk
Jack Porter — Two walks
Johnny Porter — One single
Landon Roberts — Two walks
Cole White — Two walks
Seth Woollet — Two walks

The juniors had a bang-up day on Senior Night.

The Class of 2025 accounted for seven wins Wednesday, as the Wolf track and field stars defended their home turf at the Coupeville Classic Invite.

Overall, CHS won 13 events, including sweeping both boys relay races.

The combination of individual success and strong depth carried the Wolves to convincing team title wins, as well.

The CHS girls racked up 184 points, while their male counterparts amassed 166.5, putting both squads well ahead of runner-up East Jefferson in both battles.

Lynden, Clallam Bay, Crescent, and Friday Harbor rounded out the field Wednesday, with the Wolves piling up 63 PRs.

“The number of high fives we were giving today, they racked up some PRs,” said Wolf coach Bob Martin. “They were kicking ass today!”

Juniors Lyla Stuurmans (400, 800, Long Jump) and Katie Marti (Shot Put, Javelin) led the way as multiple event winners, while senior Nick Guay captured the high jump title and ran a leg on both triumphant relay units.

Other Wolf individual winners included Reese Wilkinson (Discus), Carly Burt (Pole Vault), Mikey Robinett (100 Hurdles), Carson Field (800), and Zac Tackett (Discus).

“It was an AMAZING DAY!” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“So proud of all our athletes! Those wins and PRs were BEAUTIFUL!!! ALL so very well deserved!!”

The sun was out, seniors were honored, quality chili was eaten, top times were recorded, and, in a significant side moment, local bus drivers helped keep things hopping.

East Jefferson, which is a unified program that Port Townsend and Chimacum created after Coupeville left the Olympic League, had ferry reservation issues which left their bus on the mainland.

Their athletes could have been stranded at the Coupeville dock — miles from town — but Island Transit agreed to swoop in and pick them up and transport them to the CHS oval in time for the meet.

“Island Transit went above and beyond!” Bitting said.

As did Wolf moms, especially Courtney Pilgrim.

“She steps up, when everyone else steps back,” Martin said.

“She and the parents provide quite the spread for our coaches and volunteers. Five hours of go, they need to be refueled.”

Coupeville grad Mica Shipley (center) was honored Saturday during Senior Night at Eastern Washington University. (Photo property Bridget Hills)

Another milestone for Mica Shipley.

The Coupeville grad, now an NCAA D-I cheerleader, was honored Saturday during Eastern Washington University’s Senior Night for men’s basketball and cheer.

With Shipley and Co. providing the spirit and passion, the Eagles slipped past visiting Montana State 108-104 in overtime to get to 20-10 on the season.

EWU has one regular season game left against Sacramento State, before kicking off Big Sky tourney play.

During her time in Coupeville, Shipley, the most electrifying woman in sports entertainment, was a cheer captain and helped lead the Wolves back to being a competition squad after a seven-year gap.

They earned third place at the state meet during her junior season, before competing at nationals the next year.

The cheer supernova also modeled for Glitter Starz, a national leader in custom all-star uniforms, warm-ups, and other cheer essentials.
