The fish whisperer.

The fish whisperer.

The future of Wolf girls’ basketball is a bright one.

A strong freshman group made a big impact on the Coupeville High School JV squad this past season, and the group of Coupeville Middle School eighth graders coming up hot on their heels is a talented, feisty band of ball-hawks.

One of the players with the most promise is Katrina McGranahan, who patrols the paint clad in eye-popping shoes and is a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball.

Blessed with height, and natural athletic ability (she’s a superb softball player) she throws in hard work and hustle and it makes for a winning package.

Not bad for someone who wasn’t sure she even wanted to try the sport when she first entered CMS.

“To me, basketball didn’t look fun, but like my parents say, how do you know you don’t like it if you’ve never tried it?” McGranahan said.

So she did, and immediately found the experience was better than she expected.

A big fan of “the challenge of the game” and facing “the competitiveness the other team brings,” McGranahan, whose older brother Wade Schaef is a CHS senior who starts for the Wolf football and baseball squads, continues to fine-tune her skills.

“My strengths are my defensive abilities and my height,” she said. “I really need to work on my shooting and our offensive plays. My goals are to get better at my shooting.”

McGranahan, who enjoys her history and gym classes, is actually a three-sport star, with volleyball thrown into the mix as well.

When not on the court or diamond, she remains active, fishing, crabbing and swimming.

A big country music fan, she enjoys hanging out with friends, holds “Finding Nemo,” “The Hunger Games” and “Lone Survivor” as her favorite films and picks “Princes of the Universe” by Queen as the best song of all time.

And, like any good young athlete who knows she’ll need rides to practice, she’s quick to remember to thank parents Kevin and Justine McGranahan for their support.

“My parents helped me become who I am today because they always push me to do my best in everything.”

Four of the six Coupeville girls who went to the state track meet last year can return in 2014.

The state track meet contingent in 2013 was (l to r) Kirsten Pelroy, Marisa Etzell, Jai’Lysa Hoskins, Sylvia Hurlburt, Madison Tisa McPhee and Makana Stone. Only Hoskins and Tisa McPhee graduated. (Kristin Hurlburt photo)

Saint Patricks’s Day is opening day.

Coupeville High School kicks off its spring sports season — its last as a member of the 1A/2A Cascade Conference — with baseball and softball games and a girls’ tennis match Monday, Mar. 17.

Boys’ soccer and track join the battle a day or two later, and the season runs into early May, when the postseason will start to play out.

Below are the schedules, as they sit today.

Baseball and softball schedules are still being tweaked, and a 20th game will be added to both schedules shortly.

Also, as we go forward, expect weather to play havoc with things (the sun will come out just as the season winds down…), so keep an eye on the schedule at http://coupeville.tandemcal.com/.

Things to keep in mind:

*If boys’ soccer has enough players for a JV squad, they will play the same dates and locations as the varsity, with their games kicking off two hours earlier.

*There is a chance baseball will field a JV team this season. If they do, that schedule will be announced later.

*There is no JV for softball or track and tennis matches are one big mash-up. Varsity netters go first, but JV players then hit the courts as they open up, meaning often varsity and JV are playing at the same time.

*There are no home meets for track this season.

*Coupeville has one golfer — junior Christine Fields, a two-time state meet qualifier (she placed 8th as a freshman, 15th as a sophomore). She practices and travels with South Whidbey, since CHS does not have a team, but competes as a one-woman Wolf squad.

Of the eight teams in the Cascade Conference, three (South Whidbey, King’s and Coupeville) are 1A, but King’s does not field baseball, softball or girls’ tennis teams.

*Coupeville, the smallest 1A school in the state, is jumping to an all-1A division of the Olympic League next school year, where its counterparts will be Port Townsend, Chimacum and Klahowya. Softball and girls’ tennis both play Port Townsend this spring, giving them an early look at their future rivals.

It’s never too early to think about spring.

The Central Whidbey Little League will be holding sign-ups Feb. 8-9 for the upcoming baseball and softball seasons.

Both days will be at the Coupeville High School/Middle School gym, with hours set for 9-11 AM (Feb. 8) and 12-1 (Feb. 9).

The league is open to kids ages 5-14 who live inside Coupeville School District boundaries.

A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign up a child, and they need an original birth certificate and three proofs of residency from Feb. 1, 2013 to Jan. 31, 2014.

These can be things such as a driver’s license, rent/mortgage receipt or utility bill, and need to have the parent or legal guardian’s name and address on them.

Please bring originals and a copy of each proof.

Cost per player is:

T-Ball — $55
Rookies — $65
Minors — $70
Majors — $75
Juniors — $80

Tryouts will be held on two dates (Feb. 15 and 23) to allow coaches a chance to evaluate players and fill teams.

It could have been worse. Far worse.

After visiting Swedish Orthopedic Institute Tuesday, Coupeville High School junior post Hailey Hammer was sporting the latest in rehabilitation fashion while sitting on the bench during her team’s game at South Whidbey.

Her ankle, which she hurt Jan. 11 in a game against Mount Vernon Christian, has a tear which will require her to wear a “boot” for a month and do physical therapy.

The good news, however, is no surgery seem to be required and she was able to smile widely while hobbling around on crutches after cheering on her Wolf teammates to a come-from-behind 48-38 win.

That means, that while she’s done for the remainder of the basketball season, it’s likely she could be back on two feet in time for the start of softball.

The first day of practice for spring sports is March 3, and the Wolves would like to see Hammer and her big bat back in the cleanup slot then.

The leg.

The leg.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team may be down a starter for the rest of the season.

Junior post Hailey Hammer, who has been out since rolling her ankle in a game against Mount Vernon Christian Jan. 11, is still on crutches two weeks later and is now believed to have a torn ligament.

With her ankle still badly swollen, she will be going to a doctor in Seattle Tuesday for a prognosis.

Hammer, one of Coupeville’s top inside threats, seems resigned to being a cheerleader for the Wolves the rest of the way as they fight for a playoff berth.

Coupeville (6-8 overall, 3-6 in Cascade Conference play) currently holds a two-game lead over South Whidbey (1-8) in the battle for the league’s second 1A playoff berth. King’s (9-0) has clinched the top spot.

The Wolves and Falcons have five league games remaining, starting with a showdown in Langley Tuesday night.

The hope for Hammer now is to be back up and moving in time for softball season. CHS kicks off practice Monday, March 3.

She also travels with Wolf senior Madeline Roberts to play for a select softball team off-Island.

“I believe I’m out for the rest of the season. No more basketball for me this year,” Hammer said. “I’m hoping it won’t affect my softball teams.”
