The disparity in the 1A Olympic League continues to grow.

With one minor exception (Port Townsend football), conference domination is again a two-team battle between Coupeville and Klahowya.

A week into Oct., the Eagles, who rep the second-biggest 1A school in the land, have 13 varsity wins, spread across volleyball, football, tennis and soccer.

Meanwhile, the Wolves, who spring from the sixth-smallest 1A student body, are hot on their heels with 11 victories.

Way, way in the back are Port Townsend (four, with three coming from the gridiron) and Chimacum (one lonely volleyball win over PT).

The week ahead (Oct. 9-13) doesn’t offer Coupeville many chances to increase its league win total, with limited games and three of its four sports facing non-conference 2A foe Sequim.

But the Wolf tennis team has a pair of matches against Chimacum, while the CHS football squad hosts Nisqually League foe Bellevue Christian for Homecoming.

Those teams have a combined one win this season, which bodes well for the Wolves.

Current league standings through Oct. 8:

The coming week is huge.

It’s still early in the fall season, but Coupeville High School will have an opportunity to make a substantial move in the standings over the next five days.

Both the Wolf volleyball and soccer squads have match-ups with Klahowya and Port Townsend Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

Those opening clashes with the Eagles will decide who’s in first place in the Olympic League as we slide into Oct. and go a long way towards setting the tone for both sports.

Coupeville, led by a deep senior class, is chasing back-to-back volleyball crowns, while Wolf soccer would love to be the team to shatter Klahowya’s 23-game league winning streak.

Meanwhile, CHS tennis, two-time defending league champs, hosts Chimacum Wednesday, then travels to Klahowya Friday.

Win both and the Wolves are back in a first-place tie with the Eagles.

Wrapping up the week to come will be the Wolf football squad, which takes a long trek Friday to Vashon Island.

While the trip will be an epic one, it could likely have a pleasant ending, as the Pirates sit at 0-4, having been outscored 206-14 (not a misprint) this season.

We’re a week or two into year four of the 1A Olympic League and one thing remains consistent — it’s still a two-team race.

Klahowya, the biggest of the league’s four schools by far, and Coupeville, its smallest, are the heavyweights.

Port Townsend and Chimacum? With a couple of exceptions, cannon fodder.

Take 10 of the 11 varsity sports Coupeville fields a team in (we skip track, since team records are a moot point) and the win totals from 2014 to spring 2017 are:

Klahowya – 145
Coupeville – 133
Chimacum – 74
Port Townsend – 70

After the Eagles were top dogs the first two years, Coupeville (which has raised its win total each year) took the crown in 2016-2017.

As of end of play Saturday night, the early fall totals have Klahowya clinging to a 4-3 lead on Coupeville, while the other schools have yet to notch a league win.

Counting non-conference games, the Wolves (8-6) and Eagles (8-5) are tied (with Coupeville the only school to have at least one victory in each sport).

Meanwhile Port Townsend (1-9) is taking a major hit in its biggest sport, football, while Chimacum (2-8), is struggling in everything except football.

Current standings through Sept. 17:

Olympic/Nisqually League football:

School League Overall
COUPEVILLE 0-0 2-1
Cascade Christian 0-0 2-1
Charles Wright 0-0 2-1
Chimacum 0-0 2-1
Bellevue Christian 0-0 0-3
Klahowya 0-0 0-3
Port Townsend 0-0 0-3
Vashon Island 0-0 0-3

Olympic League volleyball:

School League Overall
COUPEVILLE 1-0 2-0
Klahowya 1-0 2-1
Chimacum 0-1 0-3
Port Townsend 0-1 1-2

Olympic League girls soccer:

School League Overall

Big wins, big losses and a forfeit.

Week one of the high school football season brought a little bit of everything to the eight teams which make up the Olympic/Nisqually League.

Overall, the schools won four of seven non-conference games, while Port Townsend forfeited its match-up with 2A Sequim, citing “a lack of eligible players.”

It was a sour start for the RedHawks, who have been a dominant program in recent years.

They lost their best player, senior Detrius Kelsall, when he unexpectedly transferred to Shasta High School in Redding, CA, and currently sit with a shockingly-low 26 players on their roster.

The news was much better for most league schools, with Coupeville retaining The Bucket after drilling South Whidbey and defending league champ Cascade Christian rolling in its opener.

The key to victory? Having a C at the start of your school’s name, as Chimacum and Charles Wright Academy also won.

Week 1 scores:

Coupeville 18
South Whidbey 0

Bremerton 45
Klahowya 6

Charles Wright 19
Toledo 18

Forks 68
Vashon Island 0

Chimacum 21
Neah Bay 6

Cascade Christian 41
Orting 7

Cedar Park Christian 14
Bellevue Christian 7

Sequim 2
Port Townsend 0

Olympic/Nisqually League football standings:

School League Overall
COUPEVILLE 0-0 1-0
Cascade Christian 0-0 1-0
Charles Wright 0-0 1-0
Chimacum 0-0 1-0
Bellevue Christian 0-0 0-1
Klahowya 0-0 0-1
Port Townsend 0-0 0-1

Katrina McGranahan was Olympic League MVP in 2016 as Coupeville High School volleyball roared to a league title. (John Fisken photo)

Fall has been Klahowya’s domain.

When you look at the three-year history of the 1A Olympic League, KSS has been the strongest across the board, the only one of the league’s four schools to post winning records in all four sports.

But Coupeville, which used a stellar winter and spring to take the varsity wins crown away from the Eagles in 2016-2017 (triumphing 51-48 across 10 sports), has been making inroads in the fall.

The Wolf volleyball squad has bounced from 1-5 to 3-3 to 8-1 over the past three seasons, unseating Klahowya for the league title in 2016.

CHS girls soccer has yet to topple the Eagles, but has finished in second place three years running.

Wolf boys tennis has back-to-back titles, hasn’t lost a league match since 2014, and would have more wins if bad weather hadn’t sliced away multiple matches the past two years.

The weak link for Coupeville has been football, but even there, the Wolves haven’t stunk up the joint like some other school’s fall teams — Chimacum boys tennis is winless — and they remain the only Olympic League rival to beat Port Townsend on the gridiron.

As we head into a new season, the goals are simple.

Repeat titles for volleyball and tennis, a miracle on the soccer pitch and continued growth on the football field.

And, if nothing else, hang tough and whisper “winter is coming.”

Those three words will assuredly haunt the rest of the Olympic League, as they herald the return of a Coupeville girls basketball squad which, at 27-0 in league play, is the best conference squad in any sport.
