“We’re outta here! Almost…”

This is the end.

Well, the beginning of the end, at least.

As they sit a little over 24 hours away from graduation, the Coupeville High School Class of 2016 is busy checking off the various end-of-school activities, and wanderin’ photo man John Fisken is there to document it all.

Thursday brought the annual Senior Parade and Senior Breakfast, and with them, came the rapid click-click-click of the hardest-working cameras in the biz.

The photos above are courtesy Fisken, and we thank him for sending them our way.

Lindsey Roberts and her relay teammates will try and punch their ticket to state in two events Friday in Bremerton.

Want to risk getting a sunburn in Cheney in a week?

Than the next two days are all-important.

Coupeville will make the trek to Bremerton High School’s stadium Friday and Saturday for the West Central District 3 meet, with state berths waiting to be won.

Competing against their three foes in the 1A Olympic League as well as the best from the five-team Nisqually League, each Wolf needs a top four performance in their event to advance to the big dance.

If they finish outside the top four, there’s still a remote chance of advancing if they achieve a preset state standard.

To be safe, though, it’s 99.99% certain you want to be top four or bust.

Districts will kick off with a flurry of finals Friday afternoon, then wrap up Saturday with an all-day bonanza.

Unlike the 2A competitors, who will also be conducting their district meet in the same stadium, Coupeville and the 1A schools will have no heats, just finals, in all their events.

That means less chance to get worn down, but also puts a premium on throwing down your best performance right out of the gate.

As we look at the list of who’s (currently) in the field, remember it’s fluid.

Some athletes are battling injuries, while others may choose to pass on certain events to focus on others.

That could allow some Wolves who are currently alternates to move up and claim spots in the district field.

So, with that in mind, the schedule (with eligible CHS participants):

Friday:

3:25 — Girls 4 x 200 relay (Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Sylvia Hurlburt, Makana Stone)

3:30 — Boys pole vault (Jordan Ford)

3:30 — Girls long jump (Roberts, Grove)

3:30 — Girls high jump (Lauren Bayne)

3:30 — Boys triple jump (Mitchell Carroll, Connor Thompson)

5:40 — Girls 4 x 100 relay (Grove, Roberts, Stone, Hurlburt)

5:55 — Boys 400 (Jared Helmstadter)

6:10 — Girls 400 (Stone)

Saturday:

Sylvia Hurlburt, here with mom Kristin on a sunnier day than Saturday, won three races Saturday and qualified for districts in a fourth.

Sylvia Hurlburt stalked the oval like a caged lioness, her eyes burning through anyone who dared to step into her path.

Then, a slight hidden smile, and the Coupeville High School senior dropped the hammer, taking the baton from close friend Makana Stone and hitting the jets to completely obliterate whatever small resistance still stood in the path of the Wolf 4 x 100 relay squad.

As Hurlburt blazed down the back stretch, ballet-trained legs churning, she romped across the finish line nearly two seconds ahead of her closest rival — an eternity in the event.

A solid punch to the solar plexus of anyone who dared to step to her and teammates Stone, Lauren Grove and Lindsey Roberts, it was the perfect stamp to a very impressive Saturday for the CHS track and field squad.

Competing head-to-head with their three 1A Olympic League rivals at the sub-district meet in Bremerton, the Wolves piled up 12 wins and 13 PRs while sending a wave of athletes on to next weekend’s district meet.

The final stop before the state tourney, districts, which pits the best of the Olympic League vs. the cream of the Nisqually League, will be May 20-21, back in Bremerton.

To get there, the Wolves had to claim a top three finish Saturday.

For those who finished fourth, a small flicker of hope will live on, until they find out if their time or distance was better than the fifth-place finisher from the Nisqually League meet.

Demonstrating depth across the board, Coupeville tied Klahowya 77-77 for the 1A girls title, edging out Port Townsend (76) and Chimacum (24).

The Wolf boys finished second, narrowly nipped 82-78 by Klahowya in a case of what-could-have-been.

Port Townsend (65) and Chimacum (38) rounded out the team scores.

The question mark comes from two injuries suffered early in the meet.

Lathom Kelley and Gabe Eck both claimed PRs in the long jump, but tweaked things while jumping in hazy rain conditions and  sat out the rest of the meet.

Those who did stay on their feet had huge days, topped by Dalton Martin, who shattered PRs in the shot put, discus and javelin by a combined total of nearly 10 feet.

His wins in the shot put and discus were matched by victories from Danny Conlisk (800), Jordan Ford (pole vault), Mitchell Carroll (triple jump), Stone (400, 800), Hurlburt (200), Roberts (long jump) and both the 4 x 1 and 4 x 2 girls relay squads.

The Wolves netted 32 district qualifiers, and may kick that up to 35 after the Olympic and Nisqually League compare sub-districts results.

A preliminary scan of Athletic.net seems to indicate Jared Helmstadter (400) and Eck (long jump) will slide through, as their fourth-place marks Saturday trump the #5 result posted in the Nisqually League.

Wolf frosh Chris Battaglia, who went 4-10 in the high jump to finish fourth, has the exact same mark as that put up by Zach Douglass of Bellevue Christian, fifth in the Nisqually League.

How that tie will be decided is unknown.

Plus one.

The Coupeville High School track and field squad emerged from the first round of the postseason — Saturday’s Olympic League All-Division Championships — in fine fashion.

The Wolves were the top 1A team in both the girls and boys team battles, while getting one of the state’s best performances from senior pole vaulter Jordan Ford.

He soared 12-6, shattering his own school record, while putting himself back up among the best 1A vaulters in 2016.

That means Coupeville has athletes in the top 10 in eight different categories heading into next week’s sub-district meet.

Makana Stone jumped four spots in the 400, Jacob Smith edged up two slots in the 200 and the girls 4 x 200 remained #1 in 1A, while dropping its time slightly.

Wolves who have one of this year’s 10 best performances in 1A:

Girls:

400 — Makana Stone (2nd in 1A) 58.55

800 — Stone (7th in 1A) 2:21.89

4 x 100 — Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt (5th in 1A) 51.10

4 x 200 — Grove, Roberts, Hurlburt, Stone (1st in 1A) 1:46.90

Boys:

200 — Jacob Smith (7th in 1A) 23.01

300 hurdles — Lathom Kelley (4th in 1A) 41.48

Discus — Dalton Martin (3rd in 1A) 158-05

Pole Vault — Jordan Ford (9th in 1A) 12-6

Dalton Martin (John Fisken photo)

The Magnificent Seven still rides high.

As track and field teams move towards the start of the postseason, the competition is getting ever more cutthroat, and it shows up when you look at the top 10 lists.

A week ago, 10 Wolves could claim a time or distance which put them among the best 1A had to offer.

Seven days later, three of those CHS athletes — Danny Conlisk (1500), Jakobi Baumann (3000) and Jordan Ford (pole vault) have been bumped, through no fault of their own.

For the moment, at least.

But while the list is an ever-changing beast, seven Coupeville athletes are holding strong, led by senior Makana Stone, who appears four times — twice as an individual, twice as a relay runner.

And one of those relay squads, the 4 x 200 girls team of Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Stone and Sylvia Hurlburt, remains on target to do something that has happened only once in school history — win a state title.

Currently ranked #1, and by almost a full two seconds, they are the team to beat going forward through league, district and state meets.

While CHS has multiple state track title winners in individual events, the only time the Wolves have brought home a title in a relay event was in 2006, when Chris Hutchinson, Jon Chittim, Kyle King and Steven McDonald won the 4 x 400.

Wolves who have one of this year’s 10 best performances in 1A:

Girls:

400 — Makana Stone (6th in 1A) 1:00.78

800 — Stone (7th in 1A) 2:21.89

4 x 100 — Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt (4th in 1A) 51.10

4 x 200 — Grove, Roberts, Stone, Hurlburt (1st in 1A) 1:47.00

Boys:

200 — Jacob Smith (9th in 1A) 23.08

300 hurdles — Lathom Kelley (4th in 1A) 41.48

Discus — Dalton Martin (3rd in 1A) 158-05
