Overlake overload!!

Over and done with.

Missing a key player after Mason Grove injured his shoulder pre-match Monday, the Coupeville High School boys tennis squad absorbed a methodical beating at the hands of host Overlake.

The ritzy private school Owls cruised to a 5-0 win in Redmond, dropping the Wolf netters to 1-2 on the season.

Coupeville, which is running the gauntlet this season by playing as a member of the Emerald City League, the top 1A tennis conference in the state, returns to action Wednesday with a home match against Bear Creek.

Rise up and dominate!!

Volleyball is crushing it, but football took a big step back.

While the spikers in the North Sound Conference haven’t played a single league match yet — that begins this coming week — the six teams have combined to thrash a variety of outsiders.

Led by Coupeville and South Whidbey, which are the last two NSC fall sports teams still capable of pulling off an unbeaten season, the league’s volleyball squads are a combined 15-4.

That’s a big step up on football, where five of six teams suffered a loss Friday in the third week of non-conference play.

Meanwhile, soccer and tennis are the only sports where conference mates have clashed.

While it’s still (very, very) early, Coupeville and King’s sit atop the pile, with two league wins to their credit.

The Wolves have won a game on both the pitch and the courts, while the Knights don’t play tennis.

Cedar Park Christian and Granite Falls have one league win apiece, while Sultan and South Whidbey are still looking to collect that first W in the first year of the league.

No small challenges.

Two Coupeville High School athletic teams faced a similar dilemma Tuesday – how to respond when facing off with the defending state champs.

And, while both the Wolf boys tennis and girls soccer squads ended up falling to their private school rivals, they met at least part of that challenge, keeping the score competitive and putting up a solid fight.

The CHS booters fell 4-0 to visiting King’s, while the Wolf netters exited their home court after absorbing a 4-1 loss to University Prep.

The defeats dropped soccer to 0-2-1 on the young season and tennis to 1-1.

While Coupeville didn’t get a goal past the Knights, they did have a fair amount of quality shots, while Wolf goaltender Sarah Wright snagged a variety of skillful saves.

“We put up a good fight, and beside a lack of focus to start the game and second half, we played really well,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “I saw improved play all over the field; we are headed in the right direction quickly.”

The net squad, facing a U Prep team which has rolled to back-to-back state titles, got a win at #2 singles from Drake Borden, and pressed the Pumas hard in several other matches.

Wolves, Falcons out in front!!

Early results look good.

Having finished the first full week of fall sports, three Coupeville High School varsity squads remain undefeated.

Football, volleyball and boys tennis are all flawless, and while it’s early, the Wolves, and next door neighbor South Whidbey, are setting the pace.

The Falcons are also undefeated in three sports — girls soccer, volleyball and football — meaning Island teams account for six of the nine North Sound Conference programs which can still dream of perfection.

King’s, Sultan and Cedar Park Christian have unblemished volleyball records, while Granite Falls has already been dinged at least once in every sport.

Of course, this is all preamble, as everything played so far has been out of conference.

With one exception.

That was a boys tennis match-up between Coupeville and South Whidbey, which the Wolves claimed in a 3-2 thriller.

As we head into the second week of the season (or week three if you play football), a look at standings through Sept. 9:
