Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

He’s back, though he never really left the office.

After much public discussion of possible budget cuts in Coupeville Schools, one wildly unpopular suggestion has been removed from consideration.

Willie Smith will return as high school/middle school athletic director for the 2023-2024 school year, and his job duties will not be added to the workload of an assistant principal.

Instead, the man who has led Wolf athletics to sustained success both on the field and in the classroom, while also operating as Northwest 2B/1B League President, remains in charge.

Smith and school officials agreed to trim his prep periods from three to two, which saves the district money while not compromising a well-oiled machine.

As things settle back into place, the man with the plan ignored his always madly pinging phone for a moment or two to offer some thoughts.

A myriad of thank you’s are in order from me for all of the support, positive comments, and work that went into the district finding a way to bring me back to the athletic director position.

First and foremost, a great big thank you to you, David.

Not just for the article, or the title, but for the commitment that you’ve shown in the promotion of our school, athletes, coaches, and community.

You are constantly seeking ways to highlight all of our kids and programs, whether it be an athletic program, community program, or activities.

The pride you have for Coupeville shines through in each and every article and I know that our kids and community walk a little prouder each time you publish something.

Secondly, the response from the community for me was unbelievable.

Oftentimes, the role of an educator goes unnoticed and we don’t always get to see the impacts that we have made until years down the road.

The recognition that the Coupeville community had for me in recognizing the work of our coaches, student-athletes and all the moving parts of our athletic department was amazing.

While I may be the head of the athletic department, I am only as good as the people surrounding me, and it is as much of a testament to their work, dedication, and commitment to our vision that makes our athletic program so successful as it is.

Third, the support of my fellow athletic directors, both in their public statements as well as the conversations that they had with me in private.

It provided such a validation that the work we do as a collective to promote athletic excellence among each of our schools and leagues is so worth it, and I’m very excited to continue to be a part of that process.

My coaching staff is without a doubt, the best!

They are tireless workers and advocates for our kids and each other and were so incredibly positive throughout this entire process.

They were ready and willing to go the distance with me and fight for the programs which they have helped to build.

It truly is a testament to each and every one of them to see the accomplishments that our students have had throughout the years as well as the respect that all of our programs have throughout our league, district and state.

They are truly a remarkable group!

Thank you to our school staff, many of you spoke to me throughout this process offering encouragement and support.

Like so many other parts of the athletic department, your dedication to our students and support of all of our programs, athletic and otherwise, has helped build our school into a positive and successful one.

Lastly, I would like to thank our administration as they worked to find a solution that was amenable to our current budget as well as provide a way for me to continue in this position.

This will allow us to continue to build on the successes of our programs to make Coupeville, not just the gem of the Isle, but all of Washington.

Venessa Matros

She made a real difference.

In every meeting, every action, every carefully thought-out word.

Venessa Matros, a Coupeville High School alumni who came back around to serve eight years on the school board, cares deeply about her community.

That has always shone through brightly, never more so than Monday, as she chaired her final meeting.

The election is certified Tuesday, and Nancy Conard and Morgan White will join the board, replacing Matros and Kathleen Anderson, who both opted not to run for re-election.

That meant Monday’s virtual meeting was the final one for the former Wolf student turned school leader, and she went out in style.

Matros made an eloquent defense for students being allowed freedom to leave campus at lunchtime.

She also battled through emotion as she described what her town, her school district, and her service to both, has meant for her.

It has always been personal for Matros, as she has worked tirelessly for her own daughters, and for the children of other Coupeville parents.

Our school district is better off for her efforts, for her dedication and unflagging spirit, and her commitment.

That came through in farewell comments from fellow board members Sherry Phay, Christine Sears, and Glenda Merwine, as well as Superintendent Steve King.

While Covid has sent board meetings online, preventing Matros from getting the full, public farewell she deserves, I hope she exits knowing how much her community appreciates her.

Thank you, Venessa, for all you gave, from all of us.

You made a difference. You made us proud.

Coupeville senior Danny Conlisk flies through the summer track season. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Hittin’ the big time. (Dawnelle Conlisk photo)

Never forget where you came from.

Danny Conlisk may have spent the summer running near and far, competing for the Kitsap Fliers and advancing all the way to the national Junior Olympics track and field meet, but he still lives by those words.

The Coupeville High School senior, also fond of shaking the hands of each foe on the oval, benefited from the support of local fans, even if they couldn’t see most of his summer meets in person.

So, we’re turning over the mic to Mr. Conlisk, who wants to make sure everyone in Wolf Nation knows how much he appreciates them.

THANK YOU!!

I couldn’t have ever imagined the change that did come my way just from moving to a small town on an Island.

The support from my community, friends, family, teachers, coaches, board members, bus driver, teammates and my mom’s coworkers too is truly amazing.

Thank you for cheering me on and supporting me in my running world.

Coupeville has made me who I am today, because of people like you.

Elizabeth, Peggy, Melody, Erin, Jaime, Kathy, Jackie, Kathleen, Ann, Marci, Karen, Janette, Melinda, Natasha, Jamie, Judie and Bob, your generous financial support to help my family go with me to Nationals deeply touches me.

I know this journey in life isn’t mine alone.

Knowing I have so many cheering me on, pushes me to run even harder.

As I head into my senior year of high school, I look backwards to how far I have come.

From my first day at Coupeville Elementary School (which was the middle of 4th grade), reading my essay as the shy kid at 5th grade moving on, trying out for track in 8th grade (after never playing a sport in my life), to being the student school board member.

A solid platform under me now, that has set the stage for my future.

Never wanting to be the cocky jock, and still learning it’s OK to celebrate being good at something.

Knowing you all are behind me helps.

While Nationals didn’t turn out as I wanted, it was a giant highlight and learning experience. Not a wasted trip at all.

Knowing I went there ranked third in our region, and ended up in the top 61 in the whole United States, is still something to celebrate.

The advice on my form, stretches, jumping and starts from so many coaches, who just were eager to share and celebrate, was a priceless gift.

I am excited to head into my senior year of cross country (first official practice was today, first meet is on the second day of school).

Hoping to get into some indoor track meets this winter and the cherry on top will be ending my high school senior year in track and, if I keep training hard, right back to state championships in the 400.

Thank you again for running with me.

Sincerely,

Danny Conlisk
