Wolves set the pace

It’s still really early.

The state track and field championships are a solid two months away, and Coupeville High School is scheduled to appear in 10 more meets between now and then.

But … if the season ended today, the Wolves would have a new state champ.

That’s because, as of Feb. 20, sophomore Lyla Stuurmans is the fastest 2B girl in the 400.

“The Franchise” leads an impressive list of Wolves currently ranked in the Top 10 among all athletes in Coupeville’s classification.

Early or not, give them their props for what they’ve accomplished through the first two meets of the season.

Wolf track soars at Rainier

Maybe call him “Murdy the Magnificent.”

Coupeville High School senior Alex Murdy brought the thunder Saturday, besting 42 competitors to win the long jump at the Rainier Icebreaker Invitational.

Splashing back to Earth with a PR-earning jump of 19 feet, 10.25 inches, he was almost eight inches ahead of his nearest rival.

Spurred by Murdy’s performance and a win in the 800 from Aidan Wilson, the Wolf boys claimed 4th place out of 27 schools.

Coupeville’s girls’ squad, which got 4th place finishes from Ryanne Knoblich (high jump) and Lyla Stuurmans (400), placed 9th in the team standings.

In addition to Murdy and Wilson’s individual achievements, the Wolves also brought home a third title thanks to a co-ed 4 x 400 relay team made up of Claire Mayne, Stuurmans, Nick Guay, and Wilson.

Saturday’s meet drew teams from multiple classifications, with Washington state 2A, 1A, 2B, and 1B schools represented.

There was also a school from Oregon, and another from British Columbia.

Coupeville, which made nearly a 250-mile round-trip to Rainier, gets right back at it next week, with three meets in a span of four days.

The Wolves host a seven-team league meet Wednesday, Mar. 22, then travel to Bellingham Mar. 24 and Stanwood Mar. 25 for large invitationals.

Logan Martin? Still launching!

Logan Martin is throwing with the big boys.

The Coupeville High School grad competed in his second college track and field meet Saturday, joining his Central Washington University teammates at the Doris Heritage Track Festival in Renton.

The Wildcat freshman earned 6th place in the discus, chucking the implement 127 feet, 10 inches, and 9th in the shot put, where he lobbed the metal ball 37-09.50.

CWU track returns to action next Saturday, Mar. 25, when the ‘Cats travel to Tacoma for the Peyton/Shotwell Invitational.

During his days in Coupeville, Martin finished 2nd at state in the discus, shot put, and hammer throw.

He also played tennis and soccer and was a key part of the first Wolf boys’ basketball team to win a district title in 52 years.

Run, jump, win

“So proud of them! Real excited to see what the season brings!”

Coupeville High School track coaches Elizabeth Bitting and Bob Martin were beaming Wednesday after their team travelled to La Conner and made a loud, proud statement.

Showcasing the program’s deepest roster in years, the Wolves captured the boys team title at a season-opening 10-team meet, while the CHS girls claimed 2nd place.

The Coupeville boys, led by double-winner Aidan Wilson (800, triple jump) demolished the field, finishing with 168 points while runner-up’s Mount Vernon Christian (90) and Friday Harbor (89) were well back of the Wolves.

The meet champs won seven events, with Mitchell Hall (1600), Nick Guay (long jump), Zac Tackett (discus) and both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams coming out on top.

On the girls side of things, the Wolves, whose 135 points were second to the 149 amassed by MVC, netted wins from Carolyn Lhamon (shot put, discus), Katie Marti (javelin), Claire Mayne (100 hurdles) Lyla Stuurmans (400), and Ryanne Knoblich (high jump).

The meet attracted Northwest 2B/1B League rivals Coupeville, Friday Harbor, Orcas Island, MVC, and La Conner, as well as Grace Academy, Lopez Island, Lummi Nation, South Whidbey, Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood, and Shoreline Christian.

Fresh off their stellar performance, the Wolves head to the Rainier Icebreaker Invitational this Saturday, Mar. 18, then host a home meet next Wednesday, Mar. 22.

Record board tracks decades of spring glory

Almost four decades, and no one has touched them.

The oldest marks on the Coupeville High School track and field record board were set 39 seasons ago, back in 1984 by five-time state champ Natasha Bamberger.

All these years, and athletes later, her marks in the 1600 and 3200 still stand, two of six records which still tower from the Greed is Good decade.

The ’80s are still repped on the big board in the entrance to the CHS gym, thanks to Bamberger, Chad Gale (long jump, 110 hurdles, and 300 hurdles), and the boys’ 4 x 100 relay unit.

Meanwhile, four records set in the ’90s endure, thanks to Jennie Cross (shot put, discus), Allyson Barker (triple jump), and Yashmeen Knox (high jump).

In an enduring quirk, Knox and Rich Wilson, who set the boys’ record in the high jump in 2000, remain the only husband/wife duo to both appear on the board.

While a handful of long-term records remain in place, the most recent additions to the record book came in the 2019 season, when 10 of 35 marks were toppled.

The pandemic prevented anyone from competing in 2020, and the past two springs, while full of individual and team success, didn’t produce any new school records.

With a new season kicking off next week, which direction will 2023 take?

Only time will tell.
