Lucy Sandahl (John Fisken photo)

Lucy Sandahl’s service game Thursday, when she had seven winners, drew praise from her coaches.  (John Fisken photo)

It started with a bang, and ended with an even bigger one.

From the opening point, a gorgeous drop shot for a winner from Hannah Davidson, to the final big statement, a sizzling ace delivered with gusto by Peytin Vondrak, the Coupeville High School JV spikers were electric Thursday night.

Crushing visiting Port Townsend 25-10, 25-17, 15-5, the Wolf young guns rolled to a flawless 3-0 in 1A Olympic League play, 5-2 overall.

CHS coach Kristin Bridges and her squad have won three straight, and made it look easy all the way.

Nothing was different Thursday, as the Wolves used a note-perfect service game to completely take the air out of the RedHawks.

Zoe Trujillo and Scout Smith led the way, each lashing 17 winners on their serves, combining for more than half of the 65 points won by Coupeville.

While long runs at the service stripe by both Wolf snipers naturally limited the opportunities for anyone else, when she had the ball in her hand, Lucy Sandahl was just as efficient.

The CHS frosh won seven points on her serve, pulling off back-to-back aces at one point and launching another missile that got “VICIOUS” spelled all in caps in my notebook.

After the match, Sandahl also earned public praise from varsity coach Cory Whitmore, which probably matters more than me writing all in caps.

Probably.

When the ball was in play, which wasn’t often, the Wolves made quick work of things.

Jillian Mayne pulled off her best play of the season, going low to save a ball and then spinning it back over the net for a winner, while Maya Toomey-Stout bounced around as the Mad Tipper, and the Vick sisters, Raven and Willow, chased down everything in sight.

The calm at the center of the hurricane, as always, was ever-dependable Maddy Hilkey, a veteran leader whose presence under pressure keeps her younger teammates focused.

Valen Trujillo

Payton Aparicio

Payton Aparicio was lights out at the service stripe Thursday, sparking the Wolves to a three-set win.

Get in, get out.

Playing quick, brutal, efficient volleyball Thursday night, the Coupeville High School spikers firmly stepped on visiting Port Townsend and never gave the RedHawks the slightest chance to recover.

Coming off a huge emotional win at Klahowya earlier in the week, the Wolves entered play in sole possession of first-place in the 1A Olympic League.

They ended the night having vigorously reinforced that reality.

Rolling the RedHawks 25-11, 25-12, 25-8, Coupeville improves to 3-0 in league play, 5-2 overall.

That leaves the Wolves a game up on Klahowya (2-1), while Chimacum (1-2) and Port Townsend (0-3) are looking up from the basement.

Coupeville dominated every aspect of the match, something coach Cory Whitmore was thrilled to see.

“We got right in our flow and managed the pace of the game,” he said. “We focused on our focus and I was very pleased to see we didn’t peak and valley.

“We got better today.”

The Wolves trailed only twice on the night, very early in the first set, with their final deficit a modest 4-3.

Reclaiming the lead two points later on a nice put-away off the fingertips of sophomore Emma Smith, CHS never looked back.

Their service game was nearly impeccable, led by Hope Lodell’s eight aces (Payton Aparicio added six and Valen Trujillo had four), and their hitting game extra-crisp.

The big spikes and crowd-pleasing kills were nimbly set up by Lauren Rose (13 assists) and Ashley Menges (six).

“We had very balanced numbers hitting,” Whitmore said. “Nearly everyone was in the positive; that’s exciting.”

Katrina McGranahan paced the Wolves with five kills, while Ally Roberts, Smith and Sarah Wright chipped in with four apiece.

Any hopes Port Townsend might have had of rallying in the first set were immediately undone by the Wolf power game, with Tiffany Briscoe slicing a nasty winner that caught the right corner and Lodell pounding the snot out of the ball.

Roberts, soaring high on the right side of the net, then unleashing with her left hand, swatted a huge spike that shredded flesh as it ripped through the porous RedHawk defense.

In the midst of all the explosive hitting, the ever-calm Rose ripped off nine straight points on her serve with a variety of knuckle-balls, proving quiet winners can count just as much as loud ones.

The second set was highlighted by a slicing winner from the left corner from Allison Wenzel, a nice team-up from Wright and McGranahan to stuff a spike and Lodell carving up folks at the service line.

If Port Townsend at least put up some fight in the first two sets, the RedHawks spent much of the final set looking like they wanted to be back on the bus and headed to the ferry.

With Rose and Aparicio rolling off serve winners one after another, Coupeville soared out to a 15-1 lead, then coasted home.

The most exciting moment in the final set came when Port Townsend was penalized for staying too long on the sideline during a time-out, then ended up playing two points with just five players on the floor.

McGranahan put together a complete highlight reel around the RedHawk confusion, climbing an invisible ladder three times in a four-point stretch.

Each time she emphatically put the ball away, skipping winners off of assorted Port Townsend kneecaps as her personal fan section went happily bonkers two seats down from me.

Zoe Trujillo (John Fisken photo)

Only the call of the ferry could stop the butt-whuppin’.

Playing second Tuesday night, the Coupeville High School JV spikers drilled host Klahowya 25-18, 18-14 in a match cut short by time constraints.

The varsity teams played a full five sets (which the Wolves also won), which cut into the time left before CHS had to jump on a bus and make the trek home.

But still, even in limited floor time, the Wolves were impressive, raising their record to 4-2 overall, 2-0 in Olympic League play.

Freshman phenom Zoe Trujillo led Coupeville in kills, while Scout Smith paced the squad in assists.

“I am really proud of the improvement we had on the court yesterday,” said Coupeville coach Kristin Bridges. “Our passing was consistent and reliable, lending to more aggression on the net.

“Zoe had an outstanding game.”

This celebration is from an earlier match, but it perfectly captures Coupeville's mood at the moment.

This celebration is from an earlier match, but it perfectly captures Coupeville’s mood at the moment.

The reign of terror is ended.

After two-plus years and 14 straight wins in conference play, the Klahowya High School volleyball squad has been shoved off of its throne.

The dragon slayers?

Coupeville, which went on the road Tuesday and shocked the Eagles, rallying to win in five titanic sets.

The 11-25, 25-23, 20-25, 26-24, 15-9 win gives the Wolves sole possession of first place in the 1A Olympic League, and puts the first dent in Klahowya’s previously ding-free armor.

Now 2-0 in conference play, 4-2 overall, CHS sits a half game up on the Eagles, who slide to 2-1.

Chimacum (1-2) and Port Townsend (0-2), which Coupeville hosts Thursday (JV 4:30, varsity 5:45), round out the league standings.

While anything is far from decided (Coupeville has seven league matches left, including two more against Klahowya), the win guarantees the Eagles will not be able to pull off a third straight undefeated league campaign.

Klahowya went 6-0 in 2014 and 2015.

This year volleyball and soccer expanded their league schedules to nine matches, equaling what basketball, softball and baseball were already doing.

Coupeville’s Rocky-like triumph Tuesday was a sterling testament to the Wolves inner strength, said coach Cory Whitmore.

“I’m so proud of the way we fought and found it within themselves to recover from a rough first set,” he said. “We made plays when we needed to, both defensively and offensively.

“Our poise looked better in close situations and that calm demeanor helped us to come away with a win.”

Wolf junior Hope “The Surgeon” Lodell sparked the victory, chipping in with strong effort in every aspect of the game.

She recorded a team-high seven service aces while adding nine kills and 15 digs.

Mikayla Elfrank pounded home 11 kills to pace the CHS attack, while Valen Trujillo (24 digs) and Katrina McGranahan (five service aces) helped fill up the stat sheet.

Ashley Menges (15 assists) and Lauren Rose (14) teamed up to make a potent two-headed beast at setter, with both playing fairly spotless ball.

Kalia Littlejohn

The same with Kalia Littlejohn and the red-hot CHS booters.

Time to make some history.

Tuesday could be a landmark day in Coupeville High School’s two-year-plus run in the 1A Olympic League.

Both the Wolf volleyball and girls’ soccer squads travel to Silverdale for first-place showdowns with the beast of the league, Klahowya.

Win and Coupeville makes a huge statement, claims sole possession of the top slot and breaks an undefeated run.

The Eagle spikers and booters, both 2-0 this season, have each gone 14-0 in league competition since the four-team conference began in 2014.

That puts them second only to Coupeville girls’ basketball, which is 18-0 through the first two winters of play.

Between them, the two schools boast five teams unbeaten in league play, with Klahowya boys’ soccer (12-0) and Coupeville girls’ tennis (11-0) safe at least until the spring.

The Wolves are entering Tuesday’s tilts with the strongest teams each program has boasted since jumping ship from the 1A/2A Cascade Conference.

The booters, who have one of the the state’s two leading scorers in Mia Littlejohn (16 goals in six games), have won three straight and four of their last five.

Coupeville’s spikers, meanwhile, are coming off of a huge win over 2A North Mason and are hitting the road for the first time ever under new head coach Cory Whitmore.
