Another milestone in the books.

The Coupeville Middle School volleyball players and coaches made their first road trip of the season Wednesday, surviving a long and winding trek to the wilds of Granite Falls.

As the day played out, the young Wolves learned to adapt on the fly, as their hosts flipped the schedule without alerting CMS, but were rewarded with a stop to fuel up at Chick-fil-A.

So, you lose some, you win some.

Facing off with a rival with a deep roster — Granite Falls sends students on to a high school with a student body more than twice the size of Coupeville’s — the Wolves stayed competitive but couldn’t quite pull off any upset wins.

Ready to get scrappy.

How CMS fared:

Level 1:

“They kept fighting even when they were down,” said Wolf coach Elizabeth Mallett. “They communicated and kept the energy up despite the loss.”

Halle Black and Jasmine Allen drew praise for their “good work ethic and teamwork,” as they “were put into new rotations and adapted well to the new spots.”

Spike-happy siblings Reina Rivers and Faith Rivers “hustled for every second ball,” while “Josie McColl had some aggressive kills at the net,” Mallett said.

Brinnley Meek, Reagan Green, and Milly Somes rounded out the Wolf roster.

Level 2:

Granite Falls had “several strong overhand servers, including some jump servers,” said coach Mandi Black, while Coupeville struggled with its own serve.

“A lot less aggressiveness in this game than in our first game we played,” she added. “Rough away game today, lots of cold feet and big nerves from the girls.”

Still, the Wolves put together some solid play, with Black hailing Arley Bosler, who moved into the libero position and made an immediate impact.

“She did great in this role, and I am excited to see her learn and grow in it.”

Evelynn McDonald and Diana Teran Herrera made their season debuts, making their presence felt while deepening the roster.

“Diana got all of her serves over and did a great job stepping into the game,” Black said. “Evelynn was aggressive about calling the ball and working to get a pass over.

“We learned a lot from this game, and we have a strong practice plan moving forward.”

Level 3:

Coupeville’s mighty mashers left it all on the floor, earning a big thumbs-up from coach Audrey Meek.

“They had an OUTSTANDING match,” she said. “All fighting and hustling to every ball. Team three went out hot and just kept it burning.”

River Castellanos and Lily Jacobson delivered three service aces apiece, while Lindsey Ashby and Evelynn McDonald “had attitudes that carried the team and kept them positive all night.

“Selina Milburn and Scotlyn Helm were dynamite passers and had some phenomenal serves,” Meek added. “Zora Worthington and Annabelle Wold were ninjas on the court and were ready for the ball.”

Up next:

Coupeville continues its three-game road trip, with visits to Sultan October 5 and Northshore Christian Academy October 7.

The Wolves finally play on their own court again October 12, when King’s comes to Cow Town.

“Chik-fil-A is calling us!!”

Winner, winner, they get to sit on a ferry for the rest of the night.

At least the journey back from Friday Harbor is likely to be a joyous one Wednesday night for the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad, after the Wolves claimed their first victory of the season.

Holding off the pesky Wolverines (and their board operator, who lost control of the score more than once) 26-24, 25-23, Alita Blouin’s spikers improve to 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-5 overall.

Coupeville’s second squad, which has come close almost every time out, gets a chance to make it back-to-back celebrations when it hosts Concrete Thursday in Cow Town.

The young Wolves will be riding a high when they take the floor against the Lions, having put together their most complete performance of the season in a rival’s gym.

CHS fought back from an early deficit Wednesday, rallying behind tip winners from Emma Leavitt and Cassandra Powers, before getting a big burst at the service stripe from Olivia Martin.

The fired-up Wolf libero peppered Friday Harbor, running off five straight points on her serve to stake the Wolves to a 15-11 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Not that the Wolverines didn’t make a serious play to stage their own comeback, finally forcing a tie at 21-21.

But a strong serve off the fingertips of Amira Anunciado, followed by Leavitt slashing a winner while soaring towards the net from the left side, was the answer.

As was a tooth-rattling ace from Powers at set point, the ball skidding away from the would-be receiver.

With the JV teams playing second, thanks to the need for a possible rush out the door to snag the last ferry out of town, action stayed hot ‘n furious in the second frame.

Friday Harbor surged ahead, Wolf freshman Emily Rains corrected things with a stellar run on her serve, and the teams battled through 10 ties.

Powers and Leavitt continued to come up with big-time plays, whether it was the former flicking deep balls that caught the back line, or the latter leaning way back to redirect a rapidly dropping ball for an emphatic kill.

Also coming up big was Scarlett Spencer, making a great save to turn a potential Friday Harbor point into a surprise Coupeville winner.

With the score knotted at 23-23, the Wolves dug deep, with Anunciado crushing a service ace followed by Powers ending things with one final ear-popping spike winner.

Coupeville got contributions from everyone on the roster, with Annabelle Cundiff and Addison Jacobson chipping in to the on-floor performance and Sabrina Judnich and Hannah Roberts bringing big emotional support from the bench.

Wednesday stats:

Amira Anunciado — 1 ace
Addison Jacobson — 1 kill, 1 dig
Emma Leavitt — 6 kills, 3 digs, 8 assists, 2 aces
Olivia Martin — 3 digs, 1 ace
Cassandra Powers — 7 kills, 6 assists, 5 aces
Emily Rains — 3 kills, 4 digs, 6 aces
Scarlett Spencer — 4 digs

The winners are jumping off her fingers.

Raining down 10 kills Wednesday night, Coupeville grad Lyla Stuurmans helped lift the Skagit Valley College women’s volleyball squad to a straight-sets win over visiting Shoreline.

Claiming their fourth win in their last five matches, the Cardinals pounded their foes 25-11, 25-13, 25-10 to get to 9-7 on the season.

Stuurmans, a former CHS Athlete of the Year winner who is now a college sophomore, added nine digs, a service ace, and 11 points to the stat sheet to go with her collection of spikes.

For the season, the ever-springy one has racked up 95 kills, six assists, 15 service aces, 147 digs, five solo blocks, 25 block assists, and 127.5 points.

Skagit returns to action Friday, when it hosts Edmonds, before traveling to Whatcom October 7.

The second of those matches will reunite Stuurmans with her former Coupeville teammate, Mia Farris, who anchors the Orcas.

She impressed the young folk.

Playing on “Youth Night” Tuesday, Coupeville grad Mia Farris helped spark the Whatcom College women’s volleyball squad to its third win in its last five matches.

With patrons of a certain age getting in for free, the Orcas stormed past visiting Olympic College 25-22, 25-12, 25-20 to get to 7-11 on the season.

Farris, a two-time CHS Athlete of the Year winner during her Cow Town days, racked up nine digs, three assists, and two service aces in the bout, while having plenty of support from her hometown.

Fellow Coupeville alumni Pamela Morell and Ember Light are now cheerleaders at Whatcom, and the duo worked Tuesday’s match.

Farris, who has bounced between positions for the Orcas during her sophomore season, has filled up the stat sheet night in and night out.

She currently sits with 36 kills, 20 assists, 35 aces, 203 digs, two solo blocks, a block assist, and 73.5 points.

Next up for Farris and her teammates is a road trip to Everett Friday, followed by a home match against Skagit Valley Oct. 7.

The second of those matches will bring fellow Wolf legend Lyla Stuurmans to town for the first of two matchups this season between the former CHS teammates.

He’s got spirit, how about you?

“Mia the Magnificent” hangs out with her fan club.

Cow Town spirit has invaded the big city.

Freshman Rhylee Inman is making an impact for Coupeville’s varsity. (Carissa Peters photo)

It was a brawl, with one bad bump in the road.

Toss out a miserable second set, when the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad got stung badly by a red-hot server, and Monday’s non-conference rumble with visiting Cedar Park Christian-Bothell was almost a dead heat.

In the end, however, the Eagles, repping a 1A private school, proved to be just a bit better (on this night), making off with a 23-25, 25-7, 25-23, 26-24 victory over their 2B hosts.

The loss drops Coupeville to 1-4 on the season, but Scout Smith’s spikers get right back at it with back-to-back contests later this week.

The Wolves travel to Friday Harbor Wednesday, before hosting Concrete Thursday, with both matches conference bouts.

If CHS can bring the heat, as it did for much of Monday’s match, things will likely end positively.

Squaring off with an athletic, often big-hitting Eagles squad, the Wolves opened strongly.

Capri Anter and Willow Leedy-Bonifas sparked Coupeville with strong runs at the service line, while Arianna Cunningham was feeling it, crashing in from the left side to deliver monumentous kills.

Once the Wolves snatched the lead at 2-1 in the opening frame, they never fell behind.

Cedar Park did briefly tie things up at 12-12, but an ace from Anter immediately pushed CHS back in front, and several winners flying off the fingers of Cunningham and Tenley Stuurmans pushed the hometown team to victory.

The best combo play came courtesy Haylee Armstrong, who flicked a note-perfect set to her younger teammate, then watched in joy as Stuurmans pasted the ball off the backline.

Not to be outdone, Cunningham delivered a screaming winner which tore a piece of the floor off as it skidded away to seal the deal on a win in set #1.

Ready to rumble. (Bettie Sifuentes-Hart photo)

Set #2 wasn’t nearly as fun.

Early winners from Zariyah Allen, Rhylee Inman, and Kennedy O’Neill kept Coupeville close, but things disintegrated when a madly hopping Eagle went off on a 16-point run at the service stripe.

Down 22-3, Coupeville refused to take the easy way out, though, putting together a brief run of success after finally getting the CPC ace off the line.

While they couldn’t turn the momentary comeback into an epic turnaround, the momentum carried over into the third set for the Wolves.

Cunningham, playing one of her best matches ever, was a lethal force both on her serve and at the net, while a tip winner from Allen staked CHS to a 13-10 lead at the midpoint of the set.

From there the teams battled through six ties, with the last one coming at 23-23 after the fab frosh teamed up on a sparkling play.

Inman pulled off a miracle recovery, poking a ball back out of the net and skyward after the play seemed done, followed almost immediately by Allen slicing a winner that caught the Eagle defense flat-footed.

Cedar Park quieted the hometown fans, however, pulling off back-to-back tip winners to steal the set away and claim a 2-1 lead.

Which brought us to set #4, where another server got scorching, but this time one in red and black.

Leedy-Bonifas, with some help from a booming spike winner to the back corner from best bud Cunningham, delivered seven consecutive points at the line, pushing Coupeville out to a 12-3 lead and the promise of a fifth and deciding set lingered in the air.

The Eagles, a much-better team than their won/loss record might indicate, never backed off, but could never quite push past the Wolves, who held the set lead from the start to the (almost) finish.

Inman and Allen played like seasoned pros at the net, while Cunningham was bounding around, swinging like a mighty masher.

Not too long after an innocent ball cart was blown up by a spiker sprinting after a runaway ball, CHS found itself on the verge of knotting things up at two sets apiece.

Up 24-21, the Wolves needed just a single point … but couldn’t find it.

Cedar Park, holding off three set points, closed the match abruptly on a 5-0 run, denying the Wolves and guaranteeing itself a happy drive back to Bothell.

Monday stats:

Zariyah Allen — 5 kills, 2 digs, 1 block assist
Capri Anter — 8 digs, 3 aces
Haylee Armstrong — 1 kill, 8 digs, 5 assists, 2 aces
Arianna Cunningham — 10 kills, 13 digs, 1 assist, 1 solo block, 3 aces
