Coupeville High School soccer is off to a strong start this fall. (Julie Wheat photo)

The battle rages on.

As we creep into October, fall sports action is in full swing, with teams in every sport making their case for advancing to the playoffs.

The week ahead will be yet another busy one for Coupeville High School squads across five sports, with 10 events overall and half of them being played at home.

Boys’ soccer is the busiest, with three games in six days.

The Wolf booters host Lopez Island Monday, travel to Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood Wednesday, then pop back up at Mickey Clark Field Saturday to welcome Mount Vernon Christian to Cow Town.

Their female counterparts also play at home against Lopez Monday, before trekking to Bothell Thursday to face Providence Classical Christian, while CHS cross country runs exclusively on the road.

The harriers will be on Friday Harbor Wednesday for a league meet, before venturing to Granite Falls Saturday for the Mountain Loop Invitational.

That leaves volleyball, which has a split schedule, and football, which has its biggest home event of the season.

The Wolf spikers host La Conner Monday, then visit Darrington Thursday.

Meanwhile the gridiron giants jam “The Battle for the Bucket,” Homecoming, and Senior Night into one evening Friday, with South Whidbey making the relatively short trip to the prairie.

As we look ahead, we also look back, so here’s where things currently sit:

The Wolves get some last-minute advice from their coaches. (Leann Leavitt photos)

Learn under fire, build for the future.

Charging into the lion’s den Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad squared off with opponents from much-larger schools at a tournament in Bellingham hosted by Meridian.

Playing big-timers like Nooksack Valley, Sedro-Woolley, and Lynden, the young Wolves picked up valuable lessons and saw plenty of floor time.

“I’m really proud of the way they played,” said CHS coach Alita Blouin.

“Effort never took a dip, and they persevered through this week. They kept at it even when the score wasn’t in our favor and kept on fighting.”

Olivia Martin launches a laser.

The tourney capped a busy week for the Wolves, who had played three times in the previous five days, with regular-season matches against Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, Friday Harbor, and Concrete.

The middle one of those bouts was a road trip, as well, meaning Coupeville’s spikers are probably looking forward to resting Sunday.

Before immediately jumping back into things Monday when La Conner comes to Cow Town.

Having the chance to endure an all-day tourney will pay benefits in the future, however, Blouin said.

“It was all tough competition, but I think it was a positive experience to see bigger competitors. And also a good confidence boost to see that we can hang with them.”

Battle tested and ready for more.

Friday nights are made for sets and spikes.

Playing in two different towns, Coupeville grads Lyla Stuurmans and Mia Farris, key members on the most successful Wolf volleyball team in program history, both racked up stats on the collegiate scene.

Stuurmans picked up three kills and a dig as Skagit Valley College rolled past visiting Edmonds 25-19, 25-23, 25-21 to get to 10-7 on the season.

Meanwhile, Farris collected a team-high 21 digs to go with two assists and a service ace as Whatcom College lost a five-set thriller at Everett.

The Orcas, now 7-12, rallied from two sets down before falling just short, with their hosts escaping with a 25-20, 25-9, 21-25, 15-25, 15-10 victory.

On the season, Stuurmans sits with 98 kills, six assists, 15 service aces, 148 digs, five solo blocks, 25 block assists, and 130.5 points

Farris has piled up 36 kills, 22 assists, 36 aces, 224 digs, two solo blocks, a block assist, and 74.5 points.

The next match for the former CHS Athlete of the Year winners features a reunion, as Skagit travels to Whatcom Wednesday, October 7 for the first of two rumbles between the schools.

Spikes mixed with compassion.

Wolf volleyball and WhidbeyHealth are gearing up for their annual joint fundraiser, Coupeville vs. Cancer, set for October 16.

The CHS net crew hosts Mount Vernon Christian that night, with JV playing at 5:00 PM and varsity at 6:30.

Money raised will go to help support WhidbeyHealth Cancer Care.

If you’re not able to be there in person, you can still chip in with a donation, and the photo above shows you where to do that.

Win in hand, the Wolf spikers head home. (Bettie Sifuentes-Hart photo)

It was close, but everything broke the right way.

Refusing to buckle against a scrappy foe Wednesday, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad traveled to Friday Harbor and delivered a stirring straight-sets win.

Knocking off the host Wolverines 25-23, 29-27, 25-20 in a highly competitive rumble, Scout Smith’s spikers get to 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-4 overall.

And they’ll get right back at it in a matter of mere hours, hosting Concrete Thursday in Cow Town, with JV playing at 5:00 PM and varsity at 6:30ish.

Instead of being tired when they face the Lions, the Wolves should still be flying high on adrenaline from Wednesday’s clash.

Kennedy O’Neill delivered Coupeville’s first wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am kill to knot things up at 5-5 in the opening set, and the battle was launched.

The teams endured through 11 ties in the first frame, with the last at 23-23, but it was the Wolves who had the momentum when it mattered the most.

Despite strong work at the service stripe from Haylee Armstrong and at the net from Tenley Stuurmans, CHS trailed by a point here, a point there most of the set, before closing on an 8-2 tear.

Fab frosh Zariyah Allen kick-started the final push, delivering a tip winner that froze the defense, before Arianna Cunningham knocked the Wolverines back on their heels, drilling a kill with some serious nastiness exploding from her powerhouse arm.

That set up Willow Leedy-Bonifas to deliver a four-point run on her serve, though it was Armstrong who came back around to close out the set with an ace which caught the backline and made Friday Harbor weep salty tears of regret.

Yes, the whole island cried…

The second set was actually even more intense, with 13 ties and both teams holding off two set points before Coupeville clinched the frame off of a tip winner from Armstrong, who danced away as the locals cried some more.

Getting to that final freeze-frame, comprised of equal parts Wolf joy and Wolverine despair, was set up by both teams selling out play after play, the ebb and flow of the match filled with surprise saves and wicked winners.

Rhylee Inman, Coupeville’s other freshman phenom, notched a pair of well-placed shots, while Capri Anter and Isa Mc Fetridge stalked the service stripe, looking to fire up the ace machine, and Lexis Drake helped make the net a no-fly zone for the Wolverines.

CHS had set points at 24-23 and 25-24, only to see the hosts dodge the bullet, before Friday Harbor came within a point of tying things up with leads at 26-25 and 27-26.

Cunningham denied her rivals with a kill off the back line, before Allen and Armstrong delivered back-to-back winners to finally end things in a second set threatening to run forever.

That seemed to knock the air out of the Wolverines for a bit, as Coupeville rocketed out to a 10-1 lead in the third set, with Stuurmans and Anter unleashing on their serve.

The Wolf lead got all the way to 20-9, before Friday Harbor found a last gasp, briefly derailing things by going off on its own 10-2 tear to cut the deficit down to 22-19.

There was no collapse coming, however, just a brief burp, as Coupeville righted itself and put the match away with a final bit of firepower.

Cunningham climbed an invisible ladder one final time, her furious fist tenderized the volleyball, and winner, winner, what’s for dinner on the ferry?

Whatever was available, it surely tasted like sweet, sweet victory.

Wednesday stats:

Zariyah Allen — 6 kills
Capri Anter — 3 kills, 8 digs, 1 ace
Haylee Armstrong — 2 kills, 7 digs, 8 assists, 2 aces
