Ready to fire off some aces. (Jerry Helm photo)

They reached the end of the road. For now.

Playing away from Whidbey for the third straight time, the Coupeville Middle School volleyball spikers held their own with a private school rival and now get to return home for a stretch.

After splitting two matches with host Northshore Christian Academy Wednesday, the Wolves host their next three bouts.

That’ll come next week, when CMS welcomes King’s, Lakewood, and Sultan to Cow Town on October 12, 14, and 15.

Coupeville wraps its eight-match schedule with one last road trip, but stays on The Rock, when it travels to South Whidbey on the 19th.

Unlike most Cascade League schools, Northshore Christian only has two volleyball teams, not three, so the Wolves juggled their own roster to adjust to the absence of a third rumble.

Several players from Level Two popped up to play with Level One, while the second and third CMS teams combined to form a super-squad.

How Wednesday played out:

Level 1:

Coupeville’s aces won two of three sets to capture the W and run their record to 3-1 on the season.

With Arley Bosler, Lilah Grinstead, and Mia Goers moving up, the trio combined with the regulars to form a potent juggernaut.

“They came together and played as one,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Mallett. “They fought hard and won.”

Brinn Meek made her debut at libero for the Wolves and “did a great job with numerous good digs,” while Josilyn McColl “played aggressively at the net, getting several kills.”

Also having solid days were Reina Rivers who “had great serves and set up our hitters beautifully,” Faith Rivers, who “had great digs and was all over the court,” and Reagan Green, who “played aggressively at the net, getting a happy birthday and finding the open spot to dump the ball.”

Mallett also praised Milly Somes for “demonstrating good teamwork and picking up several tips” and Halle Black, who filled up the stat sheet with digs and aces.

The three level two players meshed perfectly, with the trio picking up their rotations quickly, showing positivity, and peppering Northshore with service aces.

Level 2:

Wolf coaches Mandi Black and Audrey Meek found floor time for 13 different players, with the Wolves pushing their hosts hard before being narrowly nipped in three sets.

“They worked together to rotate in and out evenly throughout the match,” Black said.

“The girls made adjustments on the fly, making sure everyone had equal playing time while continuing to serve and rotate through both the front and back rows.”

Diana Teran Herrera had the hot hand, ripping off a team-leading eight aces, and she and her teammates impressed their coaches with their effort and continued growth.

“The girls showed their usual resilience and determination to come back and win the third set,” Black said.

“We saw lots of great rallies and continued improvement throughout the match.

“The girls’ spirit, hustle, and teamwork continue to show their commitment to both their team and the sport.

“So proud of how they came together and adjusted to another last-minute change.”

In the end, they wanted it more.

Storming back from a set down, then holding off two match points before ending things with the biggest kill of Lexis Drake’s volleyball career, the Coupeville High School varsity spikers stunned visiting La Conner Monday night.

Instead of cracking in the glare of the spotlight, the Wolves rose to the occasion, knocking off the Braves 25-23, 13-25, 20-25, 25-22, 17-15 to capture their third-straight win and continue their rise up the league standings.

Now 4-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-4 overall, Scout Smith’s renegades are a half-game off conference leader Mount Vernon Christian (4-0, 8-0) and travel to Darrington (1-0, 8-2) Thursday for another big test.

For the moment, however, the Wolves can bask in handing La Conner (2-1, 4-3) its first league loss and doing it by refusing to buckle under pressure.

Arianna Cunningham delivers a winner.

After a strong service run from Drake sparked Coupeville to a win in the fourth set, things got dramatic in the final frame.

A flip winner from Tenley Stuurmans, followed by three straight points on Haylee Armstrong’s serve — with Drake delivering a key spike — staked CHS to a quick 4-0 lead.

It didn’t last long, though, as La Conner pulled ahead 8-5, and was still in front at 10-7 before a winner at the net from fab frosh Rhylee Inman kept things close.

Coupeville forced ties at 10-10 and 11-11, but couldn’t pull ahead, finding itself grasping at the very last straw down 14-12.

Needing a spark, the Wolves got one, holding off two match points thanks to a thunderous kill from Arianna Cunningham and an ace from Armstrong.

Stuurmans stuffed a Braves hitter to finally push CHS ahead at 15-14, but the visitors staved off a match point of their own to offer up the night’s final stalemate at 15-15.

Enter the wham-bam sisters, with Cunningham and Drake connecting on back-to-back kills to emphatically slam the door shut on a program which has won six state titles.

Monday stats:

Zariyah Allen — 6 kills, 5 digs, 2 block assists
Capri Anter — 17 digs, 1 ace
Haylee Armstrong — 13 digs, 9 assists, 7 aces
Arianna Cunningham — 15 kills, 9 digs, 3 block assists, 1 ace
Lexis Drake — 4 kills, 2 digs, 1 solo block, 1 block assist, 2 aces
Rhylee Inman — 4 kills, 1 dig, 2 block assists
Willow Leedy-Bonifas — 28 digs, 1 assist, 1 ace
Kennedy O’Neill — 1 kill, 2 digs
Tenley Stuurmans — 16 kills, 10 digs, 19 assists, 4 block assists, 3 aces

They’re living on the bus.

Making the second of three straight road trips, the Coupeville Middle School volleyball spikers headed off to Sultan Monday, where they gave the Turks a battle.

Facing off with their big school rivals, the Wolves picked up a win and two competitive losses before heading home for a brief moment or two.

Then it’s right back on the road Wednesday, heading to Everett to play Northshore Christian Academy, before closing the season with three of four at home in Cow Town.

How Monday played out:

Level 1:

Coupeville’s top squad swept all three sets from Sultan to get to 2-1 on the season.

“They demonstrated good hustle and endurance,” said Wolf coach Elizabeth Mallett. “They put it all on the court.”

Halle Black sparked the Wolves, ripping off four consecutive aces, while Faith Rivers and Reina Rivers “set our hitters up for some nice kills.”

Lurking around the net Reagan Green “found the open spot on the floor with several good tips,” while Josilyn McColl “was aggressive and got several kills,” and Brinn Meek “showed good versatility.”

“We had good digs throughout the night,” Mallett added. “The team had positivity and was cheering after every point.”

They came, they saw, they won.

Level 2:

A royal rumble, with the Turks barely escaping with the win and the Wolves getting stronger as the day unfolded.

“They showed significant improvement and resilience, especially after a slow start in the first set,” said coach Mandi Black.

“The girls made two key adjustments: moving their feet and calling the ball, which immediately helped improve their play.”

Scotlyn Helm, pulling double duty between teams two and three, was everywhere on the floor for the Wolves, while Arley Bosler (9) and Delilah Grinstead (5) combined to rack up 14 service aces.

Bosler also settled in as libero, “becoming comfortable and confident in the back row throughout the night.”

“The team showed grit and growth and put into action many of the skills and drills they have been working on in practice and what we talked about from our last game,” Black said.

“The team got multiple three-touch rallies, showing improvement in passing and setting.

“Overall, the match was a strong step forward for level two, with the girls improving in competitiveness and the ability to make adjustments during the game.”

Level 3:

No win, but plenty of hustle.

Zora Worthington (five aces) and Lily Jacobson (two aces) led the way at the service stripe, while Selina Milburn and Lindsey Ashby were named team captains for the match and lived up to their new roles.

Coach Audrey Meek praised the effort she saw from her spikers across the board.

“Scotlyn Helm played for both team two and team three and walked off the courts looking like a true volleyball player,” she said.

“Evelynn McDonald, River Castellanos, and Annabelle Wold carried the team with their positive attitudes and really kept the team motivated.”

Another day, another gym for the Wolf spike crew.

Racking up 18 service aces Monday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad thrashed visiting La Conner, sweeping the Braves off the floor in straight sets.

Winning 25-17, 25-22, 15-13, the young Wolves get to 2-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-6 overall, and have won two of their last three.

Next up for Alita Blouin’s spikers are back-to-back road trips, with treks to Darrington and Orcas Island on the schedule, before CHS closes with four of five at home.

Facing off with the always-tough Braves, Coupeville got firepower from everyone on the roster, with six different Wolves recording a service ace.

Monday stats:

Annabelle Cundiff — 1 ace
Addison Jacobson — 1 kill, 2 aces
Emma Leavitt — 6 kills, 4 digs, 4 assists, 7 aces
