These might be the Coupeville High School schedules you’re looking for.

Maybe.

You never know, as high school sports schedules, especially in the spring, are notorious for being ever-changing beasts.

As we sit six days out from the first day of practice for a new season (Monday, Feb. 29), I can say I’m at least 84.7% confident in what’s below.

Of course, even if these schedules stay exactly as they look now, weather is likely to play its usual role in reshaping things as we go forward.

But, as we wait for everything to play out, this is at least a start.

Maybe don’t laminate the schedules yet, though…

Tyler Cermak: “I was told there would be cake!!”

It’s cake day, times two.

Coupeville High School athletes Tyler Cermak and William Nelson share a birthday, and a sense of easy-going cool.

For Nelson, he shows it as he glides across the tennis court and soccer pitch, rarely looking flustered, but always leaving his foes looking downright baffled.

In Cermak’s case, the football player who has had to adapt into becoming perhaps the best manager in the world as he deals with health issues, he never breaks a sweat as well.

Whether it’s scooping up vital info from the gridiron and slipping it my way while never letting the camera bobble as he shoots action, or staying above it all as the longtime Patriots fan is verbally harassed by jealous Seahawk “fans,” he, like Nelson, is one cool dude.

The duo also excel at supporting their classmates, and can be seen at almost every CHS game, knee-deep in the action of the Wolf student section.

As both celebrate their birthday, we just want to send them our best.

Both you guys come across as top-quality dudes, on and off the field, and it’s an honor to have you front and center in Wolf Nation.

Now, did someone say something about cake?!?!

Abraham Leyva is the very definition of laid-back.

I swear, before every Coupeville High School boys’ soccer game last year, the same question was always asked, with the very same answer.

“It’s almost game time, where’s Abraham? Where’s Abraaaaaaahaaaaammm!?!?”

“He’s taking a nap, man. He’ll be here…”

And then, sure enough, the most efficient goal-scoring machine in Wolf soccer history would come ambling across the field at the last second, not a single moment of concern or nerves on his relaxed face.

Flip a switch and he would pound home a goal or two (or three), smile spreading slowly across his face, and you would realize not everyone needs to get stressed out in pre-game warm-ups.

When you’re the man, you’re the man, and you just need some Z’s to prep for battle on the pitch.

As Abraham celebrates a birthday today, several months away from his final season of gracefully punching home goals for Coupeville, we should take a moment to celebrate all he’s done.

From the moment he stepped on the pitch at CHS, he has been, as I said previously, a goal-scoring machine.

In his first game as a sophomore, he knocked in a pair of scores in a 3-0 win over Friday Harbor, and he hasn’t stopped finding the back of the net since.

Leyva has 25 goals in two seasons, 11 as a freshman and a school-record 14 last year as a junior.

The one unifying factor about almost all of his goals? They’re pretty.

Abraham plays with flair, gliding across the pitch, and rarely seems to be out of place. He can beat you 10,001 different ways and has repeatedly embarrassed rival defenders and goalies at every level he’s played at.

He’s also a very smart, well-spoken guy, who in between teaching the finer points of the game to his successor, younger brother Aram, is already preparing for the next stage in his life.

After graduation from CHS, Leyva plans to return to his native Mexico and become a doctor and I have little doubt he will just as successful at that as he is operating on the pitch.

So happy birthday, Abraham, enjoy your day and the rest of your senior year.

I look forward to seeing you tear up the pitch one last time, and, like all your fans, simply want to say thank you — for the player you are, and the man you are.

Loss in finale can’t dim booters season!!

Maybe we forget about this one.

Missing seven players, including six starters, and with a chunk of those in attendance battling illness, the North Whidbey Deception BU14 soccer squad wasn’t able to finish its season in the intended matter.

Instead of taking a win and claiming second place in the final North Puget Sound Soccer League standings, the Deception, who mix Coupeville and Oak Harbor booters, fell 6-0 on the road to the Lake Hills Legends.

Whidbey finished 8-4 overall, claimed third-place in the 11-team league and, even being shut out on the last day, tallied the second-most goals of any team in the league.

Most of that offense came from the Coupeville Middle School kids on the roster, as the Wolves accounted for 31 of the team’s 37 goals.

CMS 8th grader Aram Leyva tallied a team-high 17 goals, including multiple hat tricks, while 7th grader Matthew Kelley punched in 10 scores.

Jake Mitten, who spent a lot of time in goal for the Deception (he stopped 10 of 12 shots in the first half Saturday), netted a pair of goals this season, while Sam Wynn and Sage Downes each scored once.

While NPSL play is done, North Whidbey is currently slated to play in the Founders Cup in Jan.

Aram Leyva’s foot is not cooling off any time soon.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grader racked up his third hat trick of the season Saturday to spark the North Whidbey Deception BU14 soccer squad to a huge win on their home field.

The 3-2 win over Issaquah lifted Whidbey, which has a roster comprised of Oak Harbor and Coupeville players, to 8-3 on the season.

It also set up a winner-take-all show-down for second place in the final North Puget Sound League standings.

The Deception travel to Seattle next Saturday, Dec. 19 to face the Lake Hills Legend (8-1-2) in their season finale, with the victor finishing #2 behind the WS Strikers, who went 11-1.

Whidbey got all the goals they needed from their Wolf sharpshooter.

Leyva banged home a goal in the first half, then matched Issaquah with two more in a wild second half.

Whidbey was playing without several of its Coupeville players (Sam Wynn, Jean Lund-Olsen and James Wood were all out), but those who were healthy made an impact.

Matthew Kelley helped Leyva press the attack, while Jake Mitten split time between sweeper and goalie.

Sage Downes and Michael Laska delivered strong play from the striker position.
