Coupeville is the new King’s.

Having bounced from the 2A/1A Cascade Conference to the new 1A Olympic League this season, the CHS girls’ basketball squads flat-out dominated their foes.

Both the varsity and JV went 9-0 in league play, with the varsity finishing 15-7 (most wins in a decade-plus) and capturing the first league title for a Wolf hoops team, girls or boys, since 2002.

All of that domination paid off handsomely, with Coupeville taking a ton o’ awards, headed up by league MVP Makana Stone and Coach of the Year David King.

Stone, a junior who threw down 367 points in 22 games, was a slam dunk choice, while senior starters Julia Myers and Madeline Strasburg were also tabbed as First Team All-League picks.

Seniors Hailey Hammer and Kacie Kiel earned Honorable Mention (the league doesn’t have a Second Team) and the Wolves claimed the league’s Sportsmanship Award as well.

Those awards and others were handed out to players Tuesday at the season-ending banquet.

The future of Wolf hoops is a bright one.

At the high school level, the varsity girls’ squad went 15-7 and won a league title, while the JV went 14-5. Both teams were a flawless 9-0 in league play.

Meanwhile, the Coupeville Middle School teams, which will provide more weapons for the big leagues in the next year or two, are playing impressive ball of their own.

Roving photo man John Fisken was hanging around the gym Monday as the Wolves played their final home game of the season (they finish with three straight on the road) and snapped the pics above.

Kalia Littlejohn

Kalia Littlejohn

The only thing little about Kalia Littlejohn is her last name.

The Coupeville Middle School hoops sensation, one half of the Shake ‘n Bake Sisters with CHS freshman Mia Littlejohn, Kalia brings it big everywhere else.

Big game, on and off the court.

I’m not going to tell you the CMS 8th grader, who celebrates a birthday today, is guaranteed to be an all-star at the high school level or beyond.

Judging middle school athletes is a tricky business, at best, and a lot can happen over the ensuing years.

Growth spurts, changing priorities and on and on.

Some talented youngsters end up deep on the bench as they get older, while some scrubs suddenly morph into super stars in their teen years.

Based on Mia, who has already lettered twice in her freshman year, I think Kalia is probably as sure a shot as we will find.

But, you never know and I don’t want to put too much pressure on her.

Either way, though, I will guarantee you this — Kalia will be one of the most entertaining athletes we’re likely to see in Cow Town over the next few years.

She plays all her sports — volleyball, soccer, track, but, most of all, basketball — at a frantic pace.

Like her sister and their brother, Zepher Loesch, before them, Kalia delivers a jolt of electricity every time she steps up to compete.

What puts her further out in front of the crowd is her personality, which is one part sunny, one part mischievous.

Kalia has yet to meet a camera she can’t pose for, and she and fellow young guns like Lindsey Roberts and Sarah Wright seem primed to claim the throne of lens-lovin’ Wolf legends like Kacie Kiel, Julia Myers and McKayla Bailey.

So, on this, her big day, all my best to the littlest Littlejohn.

I look forward to seeing what you can accomplish in the coming years, Kalia.

The Turks got tamed.

Sultan invaded Whidbey Island Wednesday and ended up suffering a pair of losses at the hands of Coupeville before their middle school girls’ basketball teams could get back to the safety of the bus.

“Girls played great! 8th grade varsity won, 7th grade varsity won and JV lost by a few,” said CMS coach Brett Smedley.

The most dominant performance of the afternoon came from the Wolf 8th grade varsity, which held Sultan scoreless for the first 11 minutes of the game, rolling out to a 13-0 lead.

Hanging around the gym, camera in hand, to document the goings on was travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who provides the pics above.

They haven’t raised a banner in the gym yet, but the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team has received tangible proof of their league championship, the first by a Wolf basketball team in 13 years.

Led by a stellar six-pack of seniors and league MVP-to-be Makana Stone (if it’s not unanimous, it’s a crock…), Coupeville went 9-0 in its first crack at the 1A Olympic League.

How dominating were they? They won every game by 15+ points.

And don’t think they’re stopping with one title. The JV girls also went 9-0 in league play.

Let the dynasty begin.
