Netters hit a bump in the road

This happens once every decade or so.

Keeping alive its chances at claiming a share of the league title, the Friday Harbor High School girls’ tennis team toppled visiting Coupeville 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.

That snaps a 17-match win streak for the Wolves against the Wolverines, dating back to 2014.

CHS is 18-2 against Friday Harbor in the Coupeville Sports era (2012-2023), with its only other loss coming way back on April 21, 2014.

That match was also decided by the thinnest of margins, with the Wolverines pulling out a 3-2 nailbiter.

Tuesday’s loss, which came in Coupeville’s first match in 11 days, drops the Wolves to 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-5 overall.

Friday Harbor gets to 1-2 in conference action.

The two schools wrap the regular season May 12 back on Whidbey Island, when CHS holds its Senior Night.

Win or lose that day, Coupeville coach Ken Stange will notch his 12th title as girls coach, and 17th at the school since taking over the boys and girls tennis programs in 2005.

But a win in the finale gives the Wolves sole possession of the crown, and momentum heading into the postseason.

Tuesday’s match, because of ferry schedules, was a somewhat-shortened affair, with rivals playing a single pro set instead of the normal best two of three sets format.

Coupeville’s biggest highlight came at #1 singles, where senior Helen Strelow ran her personal record to a crisp 7-0.

Play that sweet string music

Back to practice for them.

Just as the weather finally flirts with an actual springtime feel, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad finds itself with a hole in the schedule.

The Wolves have a 10-day break between matches, not wielding rackets against another team until May 2, when they travel to Friday Harbor.

Netters capture gut-check win

It was a nail-biter that went the right way.

Sparked by a big win at #3 doubles Friday from Kaitlyn Leavell and Brynn Parker, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad held off visiting Friday Harbor 3-2.

The victory lifts the Wolves to 2-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play and helps them clinch at least a tie for the conference title.

Coupeville, which is 2-4 overall, with all its losses to bigger schools, has two chances to capture the crown outright.

The Wolves can add to coach Ken Stange’s considerable stash of plaques when they travel to Friday Harbor May 2.

If not then, CHS can also do it May 12, when they welcome the Wolverines to Whidbey on Senior Night.

Friday’s clash featured wins for Coupeville’s top singles player and #1 doubles duo.

Helen Strelow ran her record to 6-0 on the season, polishing off her opponent in straight sets, while fellow seniors Hayley Fiedler and Vivian Farris fought their way to the W as well.

But it was Leavell and Parker with the statement win, going the distance and pulling out a 12-10 decision in a third-set tiebreaker.

Ready to rumble.

Sunny day, sweet swings

The Helen Strelow express continues to rumble.

Winning a well-played bout at first singles Friday, the Coupeville High School senior netter ran her season record to 5-0, though the Wolves fell 4-1 to visiting South Whidbey.

The non-conference loss, which came on a rare sunny, non-breezy spring afternoon on the prairie, drops CHS to 1-4, though that comes with a caveat.

All four of Coupeville’s defeats have come to bigger schools, with the Wolves still primed to capture the Northwest 2B/1B League crown.

Strelow and Co. are 1-0 in conference action and close the regular season with three-straight matches against NWL rival Friday Harbor.

Coupeville is at home Apr. 21 and May 12 — which will be Senior Night — and makes the island-to-island hop May 2.

After that comes the postseason, with districts and, hopefully, the state tourney as CHS net guru Ken Stange guides his 18th Wolf girls’ tennis team along the path to serve and volley nirvana.

The Wolves had 10 active players Friday, while 1A South Whidbey brought 18 on the road trip, so many Coupeville netters played multiple times to make sure all the Falcons got court appearances.

Emma Morano and Elizabeth Lo played three matches, with Morano, a foreign exchange student, getting big congrats from fellow CHS students Kai Wong, Josh Upchurch, Maylin Steele, and others after notching her first win as a Wolf.

The doubles duos of Brynn Parker/Kaitlyn Leavell and Lucy Tenore/Skylar Parker also played twice on the afternoon.

The day’s premier match came on court #1, with Strelow and Falcon ace Catie Beech squaring off in a tense struggle.

Both players had strong runs, forcing the second set to a tiebreaker, before the Wolf captain reached down deep to pull out the victory.

Lashing an approach shot over her foe’s shoulder, the ball picking the lint off of her shirt before diving and tearing a chunk out of the court just inside the line, Strelow earned a double fist pump from her coach.

A two-time state meet qualifier as a cross country runner, and an accomplished photographer and painter, she rolls on to the next challenge.

3rd Doubles — Kaitlyn Leavell/Brynn Parker lost to Natalie Olson/Izzy Wood 8-0
